I am Canadian, and I had a University professor (who happened to be Iranian) who cancelled our lecture for a day when she found out that an Iranian graduate student, who she was closely working with on research, was on PS752 on her way home from visiting family in Tehran when they were attacked. It was perhaps the only time I didn't celebrate a cancelled lecture. Multiple other students and former students from my university perished aboard that flight.

I give all my support to the Iranian people in challenging their decrepit, theocratic regime. My biggest frustration is that speaking out is the only thing we (in the West) really can do. No matter what the future entails, I think this is a situation the Iranian people will have to solve themselves. Talking helps, certainly. Speaking out is a massive aid we tend to underestimate. But I can’t really think of anything else other than our government officials speaking out against the Iranian leadership and putting pressure on them.

No matter how you feel about how a government should govern or where that authority comes from, be it laws inspired by holy books and so called holy men or laws inspired by men and women who were given the consent to govern, a government that believes in killing their own people for small slights that would normally go unnoticed by most people is not a government that should be saved. Well, there's still plenty of other work to do. Uniting all Iranians behind the ideals of the revolution for instance. I get the impression Iran is hopelessly divided. Some want Western governments to implement sanctions, others want fight the revolution on their own without Western interference. Some want a complete ban on hijabs, others want freedom for women to wear what they want and there's a big group that's apathetic to those Islamic rules and are just radical anti-America. Heck, Iranians even have no clue what their future flag should look like! I'm an overworked Dutchman and not a great organizer, because there needs to be a sort of symposium to discuss the following issues:
      - Concensus what the Iranian flag should be
      - A new Iranian Constitution
      - Gathering intel how to combat the regime more effectively.
      - Setting up a global lobby network to make sure governments and NGOs are truly going to help Iran more effectively, efficiently and predictably. For example: The average Western citizen can't set up a legal framework in which Starlink can operate uncensored in Iran. That's a typical job for big lobby groups.

Unlike many of the other totalitarian regimes in the world right now, I think that Iran has immense potential to not only overthrow their government, but to do so in a way that is an actual improvement and not just a descent into anarchy. The Iranian people proved a long time ago that they were ready for liberal democracy, and the US _criminally and indefensibly_ destroyed that path for them. I think it's clear that the Iranian people are willing and able to seize control and govern themselves. The US _should not get involved militarily,_ and maybe not even officially (I doubt that anyone in the middle east could possibly look at our foreign policy history and disagree...) But the _people_ of the US should be offering any support that they can, and the best way we can do that is by making sure that information and channels of communication remain freely available and continue to have robust security against state spying.
We _should not under any circumstances_ start doing what we did to the Russian people and cut them off digitally. Cutting the Russian people off was one of the most short-sighted and idiotic things we have done in my living memory. All we have accomplished by doing that is keeping Russians _even more_ intellectually and informationally isolated from the truth, and made it nearly impossible for them to resist their government's propaganda and control. It's really hard for me to fault the Russian people for buying into their state sponsored narrative on the war when we're the ones who have clamped down and restricted their pipeline to the outside world.
Let's _not_ do that to Iran (any more than we already have). We need to make sure they have access to outside news, convenient video/ image/ media sharing services, and secure, encrypted communications technology. The Iranian government is extremely fragile, and with every new wave of protests that roll through their streets, the cracks get pried apart a little bit more. The best way for us to support them is to make sure they have unrestricted access to outside information and the technical capability to share information with all of us and with each other, so they can coordinate their offensive against their oppressors.
And while we're at it, we need to re-open the Russian public's access to these same things. It can be done without funneling money into the oligarch's pockets. Yes, their government will use these same services to spread their propaganda, but they're going to do that, anyway. But if we continue to cut them off, then all we will be doing is making sure that their government can control the narrative with _zero_ intellectual opposition and leave any resistance in their country completely isolated from each other and from us.

In college one of instructors was from Iran and she told her stories of survival and escape to America. I sadly lost touch with her over time but I think of her often with these events in Iran. I hope this revolution succeeds and I hope that Iran can know true freedom. May the names of those who fought and died against the regime be the heroes of a new Iranian state that represents the Iranian people.

@@itsDerekG The problem is the USA orchestrating forced coups and "democratization" of nations they deemed "too communist" or "too authoritarian"
You can't just force democracy onto a nation, do that and the president will seize full power the first change he gets, the people won't care since they never even had the drive for democratic vote
This story is different now, the Iranian PEOPLE are tired of the theocratic regime and want it put down, they want the WILL of the people heard and FOLLOWED. That's how you build democracies, this is how the Portuguese Catholic ultra-conservative dictatorship fell. The people had enough and, with the help of rogue military units, the dictatorship fell with 0 shed blood.
Of course this is an exception, revolution tends to have casualties, as unfortunate as it is, but you can't silence the people, you can only out them down for the near future, and given how the people of Iran are now, the current regime WILL fall, if not today, in the near future.

You're right, us Americans shouldn't do anything about this regime in Iran. I mean we don't want to ruin that region anymore right? Thank you for opening my eyes, I will lobby and protest to make sure America doesn't give an inch to theses Republican rebels.
