I saw one parked the other day, black on black with the gold callipers peeping out, and from that moment on I will never understand why all the comments on its looks, to me it looked great
Nayid Cruz Arce Because most AMG vehicles are in the same time luxurious and classy, but they can also be beasts of monstruous power and never ending drifts.
But especially this one in my opinion. I just got a 2016 amg gts. My father has this sl 63. The amg gts is much much firmer. i was shocked tbh. The sl is much more comfortable. But also MUCH heavier. The 5.5L engine is superb in this.
***** a 2004 Ford Ranger, definitely not as expensive or nice as an SLK but that still doesn't prevent me from having the opinion that the SLK, TT, and Z4 are feminine and underpowered 'wanna-be' sports cars
You really have to see these in person to appreciate them. I had my reservations, but then I saw a couple in the flesh earlier this year and it all starts to make sense.Long low and classy.
There's nothing ugly about this car, it's just incredibly stealthy. That low long and menacing look this car has is amazing in person. Ugly? I doubt it. But it is kind of scary looking. Black on black wheels with gold calipers - indicating carbon ceramics - this thing is one of the best looking AMG Mercs on the road. They're so rare too.
Looks like a fuicking Miata that got bullied at school and decided to pump itself full of 'roids. Menacing? It looks like something my mum wouldn't mind driving.
I Have A 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS, 5 Speed Manual Transmission, 2.4 4 cylinder, I made a mistake by Revving the engine in my Car to one of these Beasts at a stop light, When the Light came Green, The race was over before it even started, These cars are amazing machines, The Engine Sounded like it had a Rabid Pitbull underneath the hood. Incredible performance.
Chris... man, you ROCK. I love your reviews. They are spot one, very revealing and always entertaining. Keep it up. I do love this car and yes, i agree, its Bipolar thats why is "bi-turbo."
I have this car, with the performance package and Designo design. Awesome fun. I am not the driver Mr. Harris is. But , it is bi-polar. I simply love it
The people that that critique these cars should own them and maintain them for a while like this man. A ten or twelve year old model that has been maintained you will have what you see in this video.
I have a 2014 and absolutely love this German Muscle car. It delivers the thrills of late 60’s and early 70’s AMERICAN muscle with German quality and superb engineering. I love the Muscle look of the car, and the hard top convertible is amazing. A good used low mile example is one of the best automotive examples on the market for anyone who actually drives their prize, but they also look good in the garage with other toys.
Same here. I locked in at 2017, buying an AMG S63 Cab with very low mileage. I'm in my 70s, so it will serve me for the rest of my life (if need be). S-Class smooth in Comfort mode, very sexy in Sport mode. Are there cars that will beat it on track? Of course. That's not why most of us buy a $210,000 convertible (of course, I paid less buying it used).
9 years later and I return knowing full well that the car landscape is changing for the worse. God bless this engine and bless you Chris Harris for your continued journalistic optimism
if only there were more people like harris review cars. he can always strike a balance between having enough good driving shots, and giving a good in depth summery of the automobile that he is driving........
Totally agree. It does everything but it could look a bit better. The facelift version of the outgoing model (2008 - 2011 I think) was a better looking car to my eye. Not that this is ugly, it just doesn't blow my mind every time I look at it like the previous one.
Bi-Turbo used to mean that there was a small turbo and a large turbo (for instant response and top end), while twin turbo just meant two equally sized turbos. Lately though "bi-turbo" has been the go to phrase for what manufacturers call cars with twin turbos. Sounds fancier I guess.
bi turbo is another term for sequential turbo, one smaller one for low rpm and a larger one for high rpm, in an effort to reduce lag, and twin turbo means 2 turbos the same size
Chris Harris is awesome! And the drive channel is the best automotive based series of shows out there period. They need a television network it's all I'd ever watch
He's probably not the best at it, but I'm not sure why I enjoy watching him drift all these cars week after week. Short video, but entertaining as always. Thanks Chris.
The new SLK and SL design is a love or hate thing. They are trying to progress and have a more futuristic look so thats why you have the odd shaped lights and hard lines on the front bumper and grill. Personally, I like the 2012 - 2013 Mercedes line up, and especially the astounding work AMG is doing with there cars.
Chris your videos are great but i have one comment about the audio. im not sure if its just my speaker setup but the audio with you talking in the car is much lower in volume than when you are narrating over the video. If you fixed this it would make it much easier to listen to. Thanks
UA-cam... The best website on the Internet hands down. Keep it up google. (Srsly: amazing episode as usual, although you've spoiled us in recent episodes by giving us many many minutes of viewing pleasure. 7 seems like little by comparison, although that's probably only due to being short-staffed. you're a class act, mr Harris)
Mercedes SL63 Bi-Turbo AMG is very tail happy here with stability control minimized and very powerful...grandpa was crazy about having the first Mercedes in Vienna; his tail needed to hang out more.
I used to have mixed feelings about this car's exterior and front end, but now i think it's beginning to grow on me. Just wish it didn't start at over 100k.
I'm starting to love these sort of split personality cars. Cars like the F10 M5, and this new SL63 AMG are very exciting in the sense that it's quiet and collected one moment, and then push it, and then there will be a mountain of smoke behind you.
I think the problem with this car is that in its regular 350 and 500 form it looks too silly, but when AMG get a hold of it and give it that discreet body kit it suits the design so well and turns from silly to quite good looking. Another thing i don't about this car is that to make it more powerful than anything short of a veyron all one has to do is increase boost pressure and strengthen the crankcase. So what happens when you do the same to the 65
I don't know why you guys are cribbing about the headlights, they look amazing, even if the last SL looked more agressive, they've DEFINATELY made a better overall car this year!
I have a 2007 sl550 and it is FAST enough! And much more sexier than this current rendition. My car is not a supercar...but it is a SUPER CAR! Asanti wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires cleaned her up real good. I love my mid-life pimp mobile!!!!!
Never been an AMG fan but I really like this car! Couple of issues though. Why does it have electric steering? (like everything else these days) and why does it have an ECO mode on the dash when this is supposed to be driven hard? If you look at 5:56 there's the ECO mode I'm referring to
Well i just did a test drive of the sl400 and the sl63 in london park royal, now the diffrence is insaine, however to be honest the sl400 is also very very nice and in sport plus it sounds crazy on down shift and still very fast... the sl63 is just a beast full stop.. it burys me in tje seat and the sales guy next to me u see his face turn from smile to cracked concrete lol in just like what feels like 3 seconds to 80mph from a rolling drive, its a beastly push on ur chest, but its a diffrent push its a long smooth rush of g force and fcuk it makes u smile so much.. every one looks . And its not a ugly looking car, in person its awesome especially in gunmetal metalic or mat grey wrap. And bronze rims.. Anyway theres a black series bodykit out by some polish or usa firm on ebay, it transforms it into a rhino tank thing .. with the baddest vented hulk bonnet i seen. Its in dark grey the bodykit images.. mercedes sl 231 black series wide body..
I too figured that it was a separate shot, as the camera is in the passenger side corner, and no other cameras are around him in the cabin. Much safer that he take the shot after the event anyway. Standard method of shooting film.
Drive network is really putting out some awesome stuff. Was a little nervous at first it would be full of terrible number crunching data "car and driver", instead beautiful cars and people going sideways. Thats all we really want to see.
The SL class is meant to be a bigger, more powerful luxurious roadster. The SLK is a small sports convertible that isnt usually as powerful, except for the SLK55
is it me or the old sl63 look much better than this ? i really like 09 sl63 with sl65 body kit and when you removed the speedlimiter . oh boy what a joy !
Holy hell. 663 ft lb's of torque from a 5.5 liter. I'm with Chris on this one (big surprise) though; this thing should look a lot better than it does now.
With some options the SL63 would be right about 170 which is what the R8 V10 Spyder is. And somebody spending that much on a car would consider both of these, unlike the potential buyers of a Si and M3. 100% price difference in price is way different than about 20%. Do you really think 458 and Mp4-12C potential buyers are going to let a 20k or so base price difference determine their car purchase?
Very good Chris! Interesing, informative and no BS review, i like it very much. Thanks for doing it! As a suggestion i might add that you would use a lens hood the next time for in-car camera (canon 60d?) to get rid a bit of the lens flare. The sound quality is amazing, good job on that! Oh and also would have loved to hear you elaborate on the eletro-mechanic power steering.
Yes, with options the SL is close to what the R8 starts at. Of course if you buy an R8 you're going to want to options on it that will add to the cost. Also, comparing this to a serious supercar in price is different because this isn't considered by most to be a serious supercar. The price difference between a 458 and MP4-12C is understandable because they're both extremely fast supercars. I still say that for the money, you can't beat the Japanese. And if you HAVE to go German, go C63 AMG.
Only thing I could think of is that since they have created the 55 already and upped it to a "63" or a 6.2 as you know, it would be silly and shed bad light on Merc if they'd downsize the model number back to a 55 or a 54 for that matter.
Its only a "bit ugly" when your stuck watching it on youtube videos because you cant afford it in real life. When you see one driving down the streets with those headlights on, your eyes will be glued. I'm not trying to diss you, just being honest because i felt the same way until i see it a few time in person, in different colors, day and night, and then it really started growing on me.
they buy it for style and having a large front seat area. also for taking cruises with ppl who dont want to be driven like theyre in a rally cross. and anyway, the guys who buy the SL probably have half the cars you mentioned in their garage
Very nice short reveiw. I fully agree to what he said at the end, i too wish is looked better. Compared to the previous SL this isnt as agressive looking. Have seen a few of these new, both SL and SLK and i do not like the front as much as i want to.
With the arrival of the new S-Class and C-Class the dash/dash layout and over all styling of the SL-Class is really starting to look a generation behind. I have always loved SL's especially the AMG versions but I think if I were in the market for one I would be waiting for the replacement model to come out.
+patfromozZ I disagree. I don't really care about keeping up with the times or any of that crap, it doesn't need to look brand new and have a big ass screen for me to like it.
+NikoBell12 Yeah, fair enough. I was never a huge fan of the out going models styling to be honest so waiting for the next model would make sense anyway.
6 series has compared to the SL for over a decade. Just because BMW decided they want to now consider the 6 series a GT car, doesn't mean anything. SL and CL use the same power plant and the CL is now at the end of its cycle so comparing to a brand new 6 series with a new platform doesn't make any sense.
I saw one parked the other day, black on black with the gold callipers peeping out, and from that moment on I will never understand why all the comments on its looks, to me it looked great
"bipolar" I think it's one of the best definition of any AMG vehicle ^^
Why?
Nayid Cruz Arce Because most AMG vehicles are in the same time luxurious and classy, but they can also be beasts of monstruous power and never ending drifts.
I agree. I personally think that the standard versions are kinda boring, they just have one personality.
I agree. I love my 2009 SL63 AMG without turbo. I still can't haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood without a lot of trouble. 8.5out of 10..
But especially this one in my opinion. I just got a 2016 amg gts. My father has this sl 63. The amg gts is much much firmer. i was shocked tbh. The sl is much more comfortable. But also MUCH heavier. The 5.5L engine is superb in this.
I have no clue why people say it's ugly. It's fucking gorgeous if you see its details.
I think the SL actually looks better than the SLS, fully agree with you

Look at those seats!! Luxury.
It's time for MB to do an update of this car, improve the styling.
2015 will be the year the SL gets a refresh..
Wasn't a future proof design to begin with.
facelift is due 2019
I think it looks ok. The headlights killed the front styling though.

I know its slightly off topic, but what kind of microphone are you using? it sounds so clear based on the conditions you are using it in, thanks.

The '09-'12 front bumper/fascia looked better than this one's, but everything else is an improvement.
Chris is, by far, the best car reviewer I know.
I don't know why guys are so in love with you, Chris, but you are a great reviewer. Great show
Kings' Seats, look at them
Excellent car journalism. I'm wondering what Chris' thoughts would be on the SL65 with the V12. Even more bonkers I assume!
my current dream car! the older SL63 had a sexier front, but the newer one has a nicer looking rear IMO. bummer!

Chris Harris, living the dreams of many here.
This looks awesome, and yeah like a lot of people already proven, much more beautiful than the previous year models :)
its all about of the point of taste - this car looks fabulous gorgeously. I love this stylish silhouette.
This car is Amazing!!
if you look at it in Real Life its just plain perfection, saw one at the dealership the other day.
Awesome video!!! Haha at 5:29 did that Nissan Z pull to the side or was he parked? Was this a closed course?
Jesus, 663lb ft of torques. These German muscle car wars keep getting crazier and more efficient to boot. Amazing.

2:41, the moment at which God gave Chris Harris his superhuman driving skills....
Those seats look SOOOOO comfortable.
Love the brand, love the interior, love the sound, love the engine, hate the new looks...especially the lights!
In the right spec the new sl is really growing on me. Its taken a while, but i really love it. Just not in white.
The great thing about Chris Harris is that he describes "Turn ESP Off" by saying 'put the ESP into' "Sport Mode".
Awesome video!
I've always loved the SL series. Glad you picked this car to review!

Can't wait to see the SL65.
As usual with a Chris Harris video, I watched it twice.
Ya'll are crazy...
I saw this car in person and the headlights are really eye-catching. I think the car looks fantastic...
Yea it's different model codes in the BMW range. Can't wait for the M6 vs SL63 comparison.
saw this car in person passing past my school and i was like woooowww what is that. really amazing car.
Clarkson is getting older, Chris is getting better. I vote for Chris to TopGear !!

I dont know why people hate the looks, looks worth the 100 grand price tag quite honestly. However, yah u have a lot of good options for that price
