Thank you again for doing what You do, Phil! A traditional axiom that I refer to when considering getting involved with ANY kind of "gig" - be it making a UA-cam video, recording and posting audio tracks on soundcloud, putting together my radio show, or doing a live performance - is that it comes down to THREE things: The MONEY, The CONTENT and The PEOPLE...give me ANY TWO of the three, and I'm THERE! Otherwise, it's (always) a BAD idea!

Walmart is a mutant octopus of many tentacles…
Their supply chain is a relentless priority. Preferably to take suppliers over and buy them. Increases their margin and eliminates their competition... or something like that.

Phil, a left-handed baseball pitcher is known as a southpaw because diamonds point north or northwest. Thus his throwing hand is to the south! That's a very old reference.

    • @RandallHayter
      @RandallHayter 3 місяці тому +1

This is an etymology I’ve been interested in for years, but there is no consensus. The biggest issue with the diamond story is that parks weren’t generally arranged to put the batter facing east. The earliest reference to a baseball player being southpaw is for a first baseman! We will likely never know.

Man, the adulting thing hits hard. I've been trying to save up for one guitar ever since it was released around 3 years ago, but due to life circumstances, I've only amassed 1/4th of the cost for it so far, and it ain't even a super expensive guitar, just a buck shy of USD1000.
Been playing the same RG almost daily for around 4 years now, but due to living expenses and the expensive nature of audio gears related stuffs (even more so in our Malaysian currency), I have yet had the RG professionally maintained or setup, ever since I got it 4 years ago. If it wasn't for my somewhat stubborn nature and having the drive of wanting to get better at playing the guitar, I would've given up on playing the guitar for the 2nd time. Not to mention how much the guitar fights back and the crazy tropical weathers the guitar have to go through.
Man, the things that we do as musicians in life, just for the sake of arts. 😂

I believe I read that PRS shoots nitro cellulose finishes on top of a polymer type of base coat, so these are not like true vintage USA finishes or anything.
Fender custom shop does the same chicanery with their $5-8000 instruments. This information is from Bill Nash who says he's had to strip and refinish many of them. Exposing the cover-up.

One of the Walmart SuperCenters near me has a display of the Cort guitars in store in the electronics department. They sell guitar strings, clip on tuners, picks, capos, etc. somehow they wound up with like 60 Kyser capos around Christmas and ended up marking them down to try to get rid of them, when they hit $5 I bought 10 of them.

EASTMAN guitars are appreciating in value so fast I don't know if I'll be able to buy another one. I have a very nice Eastman dreadnought that voices like a D28 but is probably closer to a D18 in retail point. It needs better setup but I'm not going to pay for it because I have my Gurian mahogany that is balanced for flat response across the neck and everyone that sees it wants to use it for recording. I've had 2 studio owners try to buy it. I sold it once and gave it away once. Both times it wound up back in my possession and that's where it's going to stay. Period. Gurians are so amazing. I've never seen a so so Gurian. They're all ..ALL ! superlative instruments!!

I've sold two guitars to Guitar Center. Both were Epihpones - so neither was a high end guitar. They gave me 60% of what they were going to sell it for and yes, I could have sold them direct for more - but it was worth it for me to eat a few hundred bucks and not have to deal with shipping or whatever. Now - if I was going to move a Gibson I wouldn't go to GC. People who grumble about selling stuff to GC are misguided IMO. I walk out of the store in a matter of minutes with CASH in my pocket with no hassle.

Phil, in the trade-in at GC discussion (around 1:30:30), there's another option worth considering. You can donate gear for a deduction against your tax liability. Depending on your circumstances, you could get a dollar-for-dollar boost to your refund and somebody else gear they wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. Just something worth considering when space is worth more than money.

Since it was under $150 (just $108 Canadian dollars), I was able to return it to my local Walmart. I picked up my SG '50s Tribute with P90s on clearance at my local Best Buy back in 2014 for $299 CDN (roughly $220 US today, but exchange was closer to par back then).
My local Best Buy typically didn't sell guitars other than a few starter packs and someone had ordered this one to store without ever picking it up.
I saw it on the shelf marked down to $600 CDN and I would check on it for weeks (they were $795 CDN retail - .$575 US at today's exchange).
After it was there for a couple months I asked a manager if they would do $300 and he let me have it.
By far the best deal I've ever gotten on a guitar and I feel like I was meant to have it 😊

That’s funny, you’d think if you sold a guitar for even dollars you paid, into it would mean you actually lost money because of years of currency inflation. Plus there’s the lost opportunity cost…
But I get it, and I think there’s nothing wrong with “paying rent“ on a guitar you enjoy for a few or many years, before passing it on for not much less real $ you put into it. It’s fun! An awesome hobby.

I do not believe that all Gibson's will hold their value. However, I believe any Gibson ES-335 kept in good condition will always hold its value. But, I can not believe a Gibson LP with a Richlite fretboard or G-Tune (or whatever the automatic tuner Gibson LP Std) will hold its value.

When I worked at Sam Ash in 2012, they got a directive from Gibson to blow out all 2012 inventory (precursor to "Robot Tuner Apocalypse). They were selling SG Standards for $799 and Les Paul Standards for $1599 (Street price for a Standard was $2599 then).
I grabbed a Les Paul in Blue Mist (great color!) for what ended up being $1425 out the door, and I had to sell that guitar to buy some more gigging gear a couple years later. I sold it to a store and STILL got $1475 for it CASH. I could have sold it for $2K if I had wanted the hassle. The Japanese dealers have bought those Blue Mists up (2012 & 2016 runs) and you can get one on Reverb for $3400 now.
I grabbed a 2016 Tribute (humbuckers) when I decided I missed the Les Paul sound. I didn't get a discount, but the guitar was $799. I sold that guitar (again to a music store) for $675 in 2023 when they had a Blue Mist for $2300. They sold the Tribute for $1049.
So yes, Gibsons hold their value well, even in the current market.

PLUS, there’s an incredible guitar store adjacent to Saxon that has an absolutely huge array of cool used stuff. You should come some week Phil. Life doesn’t get much better than this.

Look at how Epiphone handled the previous Alex Lifeson model for 800 bucks. Once people realized they were offering such a value-packed guitar for 800 they were flying off the shelves. Epiphone decided they weren't making enough money, discontinued it and made a guitar with less features and one that took less labor to produce. But instead of pricing the guitar cheaper they raised the price big time. So you're telling me that by removing the parts and labor associated with the piezo system won't save $100-200 off the cost, but actually increase it by $500?! I doubt they're paying Alex that much more this time. You'd think for that price if there was no piezo they'd at least make the pickups the main feature and give us Gibson pickups, but no, still Epiphone pickups. The ruby color must be made from actual rubies because I don't understand how they arrived at that price for a Chinese guitar. I thought the whole 'made in China' thing was supposed to be a cost-saving measure. Not for Epiphone apparently.
I believe there comes a point where we have to consider if brands like that should be temporarily boycotted, even if they do have a good product. Someone else will make something better for cheaper, "oh, but it has to have that name on the headstock." That Gibson/Epiphone name used to mean something else imo, now you're just basically showing off that you overpaid for your sweet and sour guitar. When Epiphone released the updated Alex Lifeson model, it's almost like they just went on Reverb and saw the discontinued model going for 1,300 and chose that for their new price point. But that one had a piezo, the new guitar doesn't. It doesn't make sense. Epiphone is charging what they think they can get away with. Stop buying them, or if you have to just buy used instead.
You can tell they desperately want to sell new guitars right now. They could easily drop prices but instead they're trying to offer us better guitars and still overcharge, and don't get me wrong, the 'better guitars' part is a great thing, but if we simply don't overpay for them then they'll have to drop prices eventually. I'm not saying not to own an Epiphone in the meantime if you want one, heck, I picked up a couple used Epiphones recently because I got a really good deal of them but if I were buying a new guitar then I'd go with another brand, one that I want to support and give my business to like PRS.

Buying a $2500 guitar in 1988 and selling it now for $3500 is not a good inflation hedge, it’s just nice that you get a guitar and don’t lose a lot of money. Taking that same $2500 and investing in a DJ 500 indexed fund in 1988 yields over $40,000 in 2024, not inflation adjusted.

that's called Inflation.....The reason prices shot up is directly from Supply Chain problems due to the pandemic. Many people are taking advantage now and "keeping" prices high....they are trying to make up for lost profit during the pandemic.....but some are greedy and holding as long as they can. Prices will drop back eventually......as market prices are directly tied in with grocery prices, it's all interwoven.

Partly true. Corporate greed is what shot prices up. That's why the large corporations were blaming supply chain issues while their profits were soaring and continued to soar. Secondary market was mostly pandemic related.

The Les Paul you got for your birthday when you were 15 isn't worth a ton of money just because it's old and you didn't beat it to death. There are a zillion of them just like yours. If you want an investment, buy gold bars....

No, it's not- but imo you should keep resale in mind when buying. I used to not worry about it, because I was buying budget gear mostly, but as you get older and start buying higher end stuff, resale matters. Especially considering when something expensive tears up and has to be replaced- often it's selling everything I don't absolutely need that saves the day. When my last tube amp tore up- I sold all my pedals and had enough to buy a Headrush MX5 modeler and the matching FRFR 112 cab. I needed stuff to sell quickly, and for as much as I could get for it- luckily, I had a ton of Boss pedals. They sell about as quickly as you can list them, usually for a decent price.

If not, oh well... we don't always get what we want. But frankly, just the thought of having to try and guess what "Item X" MIGHT be worth 8 or 10 years out just in case I have to sell it to get something else, is beyond exhausting. And if you do manage to guess correctly with any kind of regularity, then you should be day trading rather than buying guitars... you'd be having lunch with the Warren Buffets of the world instead of trying to figure out if an old fiddle will be worth $800 on Reverb in August of 2032.

@@notonyourlife7939 Bud, I don't mean any offense- but what you just said is really silly and ridiculous. I'm certainly not alone when I say I consider the resale of whatever I buy- the majority of musicians I know do the exact same thing. And it's not very difficult to predict what will hold its value, the same stuff that's been holding its value for years and years now- Gibson, Martin, Fender, Vox, etc. - they're not going to be worth more, not even worth every penny you paid- but you'll get the majority of your money back. These are not "toys" to ppl like me- they're tools, I make my living playing music.

@@stoneysdead689 One man's "silly" is another's objective reality. The vast majority of people who own guitars are not professional musicians, thus putting them squarely in the "toy" category for probably 99% of the buying public. I also own motorcycles, but I don't race Moto GP...so they're toys, too. Guys who make their living on the track @200 mph would probably disagree, but that won't make the ones in my garage any more of a "tool".
The fact that such is not the case for you doesn't make my take on things "ridiculous". It just means that we have completely different needs, and will never view this topic the same way... but that doesn't make either one of us "wrong". Just different.

You're sorely mistaken. If your purchase was for "life" ? You're good. Why? Japanese/Korean product is better AND the big marketeers JP (Jim Page) and JP ( Joe Perry) are aging. JB doesn't carry the same weight. Phil "you're literally giving this advice" AFTER you yourself divested from the store . Come ahn. Get real. Do agree with your love of Ibanez .. prefer 1 of the other Asian manufacturers .. but yeah there's great guitars coming out of Asia ( just not the junk areas..
