They basically took the good aspects from both capitalism and communism, took inspiration from Singapore, made some adjustments as per their conditions, and created their own unique system. And the result is right in front of us.
The difference between India & China is China don't have government that keeps on changing every 5 year like Musical Chair because of which foreign Investments keeps on coming as there is less fear of haphazard policy changes & youths(or citizen as a whole) can focus fully on their life rather than political tensions. Don't be fooled by the buildings, has any one seen good bike or branded car, the people are not having the quality life, with huge debt any one can build the buildings. the growth is inorganic and has been created by govt not public.
