Andrew, you could have sold ppl on needing an expensive palette. Thanks for keeping it real. True artists make stuff. Love your work and the information.
that is absolutely bloody brilliant Andrew - I will have to make something similar myself - the fact it can go up and down and angle is sheer genius - thanks for making the video.
Thanks for the comment Jason! I love thinking outside the box, we're all artists here, lets get creative eh? Mate, can I just say that your work is stunning. I love Wildlife paintings and may I suggest that anyone here interested in Wildlife art: CHECK OUT JASON'S UA-cam CHANNEL! it's a must!!! ua-cam.com/users/wildlifeartjm
Thanks Andrew - you know the attitude that we are all artists together is a rare one - I remember years ago (about 20 - showing my age Lol) I professional wildlife artist wrote a real abusive email to me complaining that I was showing everyone all the painting secrets on my ebooks and videos! and I was going to ruin his career! SERIOUS! I have always loved sharing my techniques and I know you do to, because everyone deserves to enjoy creating art :)
Wow, some people eh? The funny thing is we all have an individual take and approach, and by coming together and sharing our material we may very well be able to make something new. Nobody in history has had UA-cam, it's the new printing press!
This is such a humbling and inspiring video! Really drives home the point of not having to spend lots of money to be successful and pointing out that if you ARE gonna spend money, do it on the things that matter like the paint, brushes and surface.
You gotta be the coolest traditional artist ever, with all those self-made gadgets to help you out - it is awesome to see that your creativity extends from the artistic realm to the crafts too. Also, at first when you showed your new palette I was like "Why the hell he has a CINTIQ tablet attached like that?", haha. It looks super cool and super "sci fi-ish"! I've had experience with oil paitings when I was 17, it was cool but I was already too accostumed to watercolors (to this day, it is my favorite traditional media, alongside ballpoint pens), so I didnt really adapt to the materials. But it is still cool to follow the processes of it, and all your tips to make it easier for the painters like you =)
I’ve been working on making my own easel. It’s portable for out doors and it’s a combination of scraps like you. Love creativity as an artist. No one has what you have and you work on something that you will cherish because YOU MADE IT!! Love this, you keep on surprising me!! ♥️👍🏼♥️👍🏼
I love how you make useful tools from found objects! I just watched your new video showing how you made your still life box. Want to make both of these. Awesome ideas!
innovating ... adaptive ... great for everything... not only for painting... I like it..... the mechanism of the chair can also be used as a tablet or lap top holder... BRAVO
Love these ideas! I actually frequent a second hand store in my town just looking for old art books and old easels or paint boxes people have donated. I've picked up about 5 different easels in various conditions for very cheap and I've been able to re-purpose parts of these easels for nice studio setups like your showing here.
andrew i love your work. i am 69. offered a scollarship in 1966 high school, but went on to support myself working with the railroad. now i am semi retired and just back to painting one year now. wild cats and grazing animals, god blest me to come back to it well. i do like o watch what you do it helps me alot on my difficult areas mixing oils etc..thanks again keep up the good work and show. lmk.
I'm such a huge admirer of your work - particularly your waves and sea scapes! I have a problem.......I too seem to have got stuck. I seem to have lost my incentive along the way and can just look at a started painting for weeks and not finish it! I had to stop taking lessons as that was the only tine I used to paint. Yet I love it when I do it! Maybe watching you in detail will give me back that incentive....? Fingers crossed!
so generous to share with us your eminently sensible ideas and knowledge about the practicalities of painting. Actually I just really enjoy your clips. Keep them coming
That's very cool Andrew, I cottoned onto to using glass about year ago when I saw a similar set up on UA-cam. However I also needed to make a cover for this and the wooden box lid I made, took up quite a lot of room for my little work space. I then decided upon a compromise :) I went to a thrift store (God bless all thrift stores ) and found a microwave glass dish that sits on the turntable inside, and I also found a glass pot lid that perfectly covered this round dish. I am now able to cover my palette and see exactly what's inside, when not in use and as an extra safeguard against the paint inside drying, I employ another tip I stumbled upon where one takes a little rag, put about 10 drops of clove oil onto it, and leave this on the palette under the lid... the fumes keeping the paint wet, and as a bonus, smells great when I take the lid off :) Admittedly, I would say that if I did much larger paintings like your works of art, I would need a big piece of glass like yours.. but my paintings rarely get bigger that about 16 or 18 inches... BTW I have recently become a member of your amazing academy, and I am learning SO MUCH!!! Thank you for all you do!!
Hey, Mr Tischler! Super video! I have been painting for about 3,5 years, and I use a glass plate from an old stereo rack shelf. Its about the same size as the one you are painting on. What I haven`t done is to spraypaint the back with a mid value as you did in this video, but now I will do exactly that. I have watched many of your videos up through the years, and I really love many of your paintings. My goal, as yours, is to create the realism and subtle hue and valueshift that only the human eye (or brain) can detect, but at the same time push foreward a "romantic" feel by still making it painterly, instead of overdoing it and falling into the realm of hyperrealism. What I find most exciting is to create landscapes out of my own imagination, but I do get inspired by some photographs that I find online or from my own shots. By creating things as you go along will strengthen your abillity to connect to the intuitive aspect of painting, where you really are put to the test of applying your knowledge about light, complementary effects, tones and values. And sometimes the insufficiency of working from "pure" imagination is what gives a painting that human touch and playfullness that sometimes can get lost when using photoreference. I only use reference when I need a strong convincing portrayal of an animal, human figure, building or object in a landscape scene. It would be impossible for me to paint a convincing depiction of a bear, horse or car without using a photoreference. But when painting sea- and landscapes, I am pretty close nailing it almost perfectly. Much thanks to you and a few other contemporary artist (at elast 10 "youtube" artists), and my will to not settle for mediocrity. I wish you well, and start building some muscle again. Its good for you, and you look better. :) Keep up the great work, Andrew! Eleo Jay
Your amazing personality and truly inspiring videos helped me realize that painting is what I’ve been missing a lot. Now I’m in the middle of making shopping list for tomorrow :) Thank you !
Great Ideas for the palette Andrew. As an extra, I painted the underside of glass palette as follows: Central area a mid-tone grey. The Top area a strip of squares painted with the colours I use. The bottom area a strip of squares indicating the 9-value scale. A good idea to paint in reverse order, so that once flipped around it is correct. With oils it may take a long time to set, so adding a medium helps. Once the swatches were dry, I glued on a masonite backing. A basic frame can be added to give the finished look.
Congratulations, this is a very interesting answer for artists. I like very much your art channel and I have to thank you for the knowledge you give us in your videos. I am from Venezuela and I have a carpentry channel in spanish and I think you created an amazing artist pallet
A brilliant idea and very informative video Andrew. I have made a glass palette from recycling but nothing as elaborate as yours. I had a large picture framed under glass which I no longer wanted. So I removed it and put a white cardboard instead and sealed it in the frame so I can use it. Great ideas . I await the next video . Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience and inspiring skills.
Yes Sir! I made a palette similar! Outstanding! You and artist David Kassen I believe was the first time I observed the palette being used in a straight up or slanted position. Man! It makes alot of sense!
Great tutorial... got mine from my daughter’s little glass table that she wasn’t using anymore, the glass was layed on a grey background already so it was perfect in size and colour and o easy to clean with a scraper 👍
Funny! I've used an old fridge shelf for my palette since a week ago.. but only discovering this video now :D.. feels more satisfying. Thanks for the great videos!
5 dislikes: I don't understand what's to dislike about this video. An excellent set up (which I duly copied, using stuff I didn't spend 1 cent to get).
This is good timing. I just had a gas lift stool's seat bust. Now, instead of throwing it away, I think I may pull something like this together. Thanks for the great idea!
I love your videos man! I have been painting on and off, self taught since 2015 and havent gotten serious until recently , your videos help me out a lot! Id love to see your thought process in choosing the right colors for a painting and why... Nice palette too, very resourceful!
Love your work. Thank you for your tutorials and sharing info such as this excellent adjustable pallet!! Your portraits are gorgeous! Landscapes, birds... all so beautiful!
Could you make a video about what kind of chair you use? One of the most important things in a painting studio is a good chair, comfortable and ergonomic, as we spend many hours sitting while working. The thing is that a good chair is very expensive. I have already tested some but they all become uncomfortable after a few hours of use. What kind of chair do you use?
i also have made weird n wonderful things like this to help me in the studio. adjustable height roller chair on wheels. and a painting table out of an old cabinet drawers on wheels with in built water buckets and brush holders, etc, for a start. thanks andrew! good work mate! cheers
I think one of my neighbors fixes or sells refrigerators so they often have refrigerator parts out for disposal. kicking myself for not grabbing some of those glass shelves before! definitely gonna make a palette out of them next time I find any. thanks for the tip!
Excellent video. It would be great if sometime you show the wooden hand held palettes you use. One is an unusual design and I would like to make one similar.
I also use glass as a palette. I actually did something very similar to a piece of glass and some wood that I found. I did it myself, I didn't buy anything and it is very similar to yours. Very useful. Unfortunately I can't post a photo here. Nice job Andrew!
Keep up the great work Andrew! I find your content very informative and engaging. I have just started my own channel and I am using your videos as a model. Two Thumbs Up!
You can also purchase already painted tempered glass. I purchased two from the United States to Japan - one A4 and the other A3 sizes. It looks so high tech but IT’S A REFRIGERATOR SHELF?! You, sir, are my new hero.
Have faith in Jesus Christ

whatever gets you from point A to point B. Great Andrew! Fancy stuff not always fits the needs.

This is really clever... I like the idea of recycling the base and lift of an old office chair to mount the easel. Thank you for sharing.

Hey Diligent Visual! Thanks for the comment mate! I appreciate the feedback, you are going to keep me humble and on the ball brother!
This is brilliant.
You can also purchase already painted tempered glass. I purchased two from the United States to Japan - one A4 and the other A3 sizes. Just say how strong they are is Imagine each of them came just in envelopes! I am a clumsy elephant in a porcelain shop so they are gifts from God to me. Oh, they are also very inexpensive, but when you knock on them with your knuckle the sound is a hundred percent glass. Of course I am not sure if tempered glass was available when you made this video. Andrew, thanks for great videos and and stay in good health. By the way, everyone will agree you are equally great scholar as painter.
hey now....I believe this is something even I can build. Thanks, I may have to do just that.
very simple, and very useful, thanks!
Top Idea Andrew, Got everything except the fridge shelf.! Hunting now.
