Hey Mark - great video! This is the first I've drawn along with. The spines on the forelegs help the mantis hold onto its prey - like barbs on arrows and darts keep them from slipping through the animal. Thanks so much for the awesome videos - I love your book, too.

What mantises don’t have are pupils, which animals like mammals use to focus light on the retina and form an image in the brain.
When you look at the insect’s eyes, the dark spot you see moving is actually just more of those light receptors that, because of the angle, are absorbing all the wavelengths of light-which is why they look black. Meanwhile, the light receptors all around the dark spot are reflecting certain wavelengths, which is why the rest of the eye appears green, white, brown, or purple
The hand/claw is the tibia, the middle part is the femur, and the part that connects to the legs is the coxa

Wow, so I just happened to look at mark crilley's subscriber count cause I hadn't looked in a long time, and it was over 2 million!! I watch his how to draw videos but I got busy with school recently and haven't had much time to watch UA-cam. I remember when Mark only had 2,000 subscribers! Now he's got 2 million. That's crazy, but I can't be surprised either because mark makes great videos!

Yes they help the creature hold on to smaller wiggling bugs so it can eat.

I believe the feelers on the butt are female parts to help lay eggs, female crickets have long feeler like protrusions to help plant eggs.

Prayingmantises are one of the few bugs that I still like to pick up from time to time. Thank you for the video; you always help me to get excited about continuing to pick up my pencil and not just simply give up :)

Hey, Mark. I just wanted to tell you that I've been non-stop watching your videos for about a week or two and I wanted to thank you for sharing all your knowledge with so many people. I just recently decided that I wanted to start drawing anime/manga stuff. Sure, there are lots of ways to do that, but drawing in general has it's own difficulties. I can't even draw a head or an eye correctly. So I need some advice on where to start, I'm completely clueless at the moment. Should I start with primitives and stick to them for a while? Everybody has their own ideas, but I just wanted to ask my favorite artist. If you ever read this, know that you've really inspired me and you're awesome! Thanks for your time. :)

Praying mantis arms are for hunting and grabbing their food, Im pretty sure the spikes are to lock it in, without the arm things it wouldnt survive.

I think Mark Crilley should make a video on how he uses the black Prismacolor without messing up. I tend to mess it up a lot. Wether it be the pencil chips and leaves a mark I cant erase or I make a line way too thick.
the mantis had a compound eye like a house fly. They do not have pupils or eyes like a chameleon. The past that looks like a pupil is actually an optical illusion giving the appearance of one. I learn that from Nova on PBS.

the little legs are like gears for rapid movement the the arns grab and crush it's prey
i used to draw alot of bumble bees in the 3rd grade...i remember it being both challenging and alot of fun...mosquitoes are another good choice for insects...just a suggestion
