amazing story. i have ancestors from Orkney of the same period and earlier, and one who was with the Hudson Bay Company, so it's fascinating to see what their life might have been like.
How very moving! Wonderful coworkers to pass the hat to get his passage home. No doubt, they weren't earning a lot either. I wonder what John did as a disabled person. How did he and his wife support themselves and five children? It seems to me that most women would not have been the breadwinner of the family in those times and, as he had been a physical labourer, I wonder what skills he acquired to earn a living, having lost his feet.
