Actually, listening to The Beatles discography from Please Please Me to Let It Be is actually how I got into them. In fact, that's how I listen to any artist/band I don't know or haven't listened to, and I would recommend anyone else to do the same for The Beatles and other artists. You get to see their progression and watch them grow.
I was one of those 12 yr olds glued to the Ed Sullivan appearance and scouring the newspaper for any mention of them. My brother bought me Meet the Beatles cause I had no money. I actually subscribed to Disney + just to watch this over and over and over, which I did. The same girl who went to the afternoon showing of Hard Days Night, hid after each showing all day and watched it 5 times. I was fortunate to find the whole Maysel's doc on UA-cam 4 or 5 yrs back. It was done in several segments. Now, I want to lobby someone to bring back in its entirety. It's greater than great. Saw them in 1966, 5th show before the last Sam Francisco one. Went just last May to London and Liverpool by myself and did the whole pilgrimage. In my view, there could never be enough Beatles.
I'll never give up the fight for physical media. Oh, cool, they interviewed some of the people who were there during the New York trip, that's really fun to se- DAVID LYNCH?!

I inherited my grandma’s copy of ‘Introducing the Beatles’ that she got for her 18th birthday when it was released. She wrote which member was which in small letters on the cover, and wrote on the back which songs were sung by Ringo (who I assume was her favorite member). Always makes me laugh that she had to write which member was who.
The Beatles First U.S. Visit was first released on DVD in 1991 by MPI Home Video, and Apple put it out in 2004. I hope they use the restored footage to release it again, as it is much more complete, has more music and no modern narration. I think it is a much better document of the same events. You gotta see it Elliot.
It's wild to me that Elliot has never seen the First US Visit but he's simultaneously a Beatles UA-camr. It's hard to rate the worth and point of this documentary without bothering to examine the footage's "initial" form. This film is basically pointless when compared to the First US Visit. It's basically like watching a clip show rather than actual episodes of a show. I do like Elliot and was one of his Patreons for a time but come on, would it have been hard for him to just watch the First US Visit beforehand for context? But also COME ON bro, don't you want to just watch 83 candid minutes of the Beatles in 64 with no talking heads?! Bro has the US album boxset but hasn't seen The First US Visit. Priorities. This guy has quickly become a "quote from Wikipedia" and "I can afford the products so my opinion is most valid" UA-camr. The Beatles on Ye Olde Disney Channel (circa 1989) is how I got into them in the first place! They not only ran the cartoons, but A Hard Day's Night, Help, and (censored) Magical Mystery Tour, several clip collections of Ready Steady Go (which included lots of other British Invasion acts), and did the American TV debut of Paul's Rupert the Bear film. The two have worked together for a long time.

@ I do have equipment to transfer vhs tapes, have a whole collection of home recorded VHS tapes from the 80’s to the 2020’s. Recently obtained a tape from 1989 containing the series premiere of the simpsons and currently playing some beatles films I bought from a record store. I can probably transfer the tapes for you via mail for free of charge or something
I kinda exited my viewing a little jaded, wondering what it added to the Beatles dialog as a whole. You did a good job of explaining the merits of this film here. What can I say? I'm a pooper, not a buzzer. Any Beatles fan who isn't following Elliot is missing out on a very well thought-out and deeply human insight. I'm almost 40. I became immediately obsessed with the Beatles when The Anthology aired when I was 9 (hey, this year is the 30th anniversary! A remastered release is going to happen. It's the only prediction I will make for 2025). Many voices have come and gone during my Beatles fandom but Elliot has quickly become one of my favorites. You've changed my opinion more than a few times and this is no exception. I'd love an offical annual release, Beatles '65, Beatles '66, that digs into each year with this level of focus. Each episode would be 8-12 hours long and get into every fine detail like Beatles Bible just did with their 4 1/2 hour Sgt. Pepper video.

As a musician who is closing in on 30yrs of playing, you can get a bit tired of certain bands/artists, especially The Beatles (and especially if you're from the UK), but your channel really gave me the kick in the arse I needed to remember why and how great they are. My favorite moment was when my Dad recognized one bit of the footage that was referenced in The Rutles. After we'd watched the documentary, we flipped over to that. Not that it was a bad thing, mind you. Just a thing that happened.

What I like about your videos is that you have absorbed and reacted to The Beatles as if you're twice your age, as if you grew up in a time when they had real meaning in the culture. As a 57-year-old, I love the authenticity and depth of your knowledge and affection. As for the documentary, I liked only some of the contemporary interviews -- Ronnie Spector, Jack Douglas. But I could have done without David Lynch and Terrence Trent Darby. Why were they there? I felt there was too much padding in the film. But I still appreciated it tremendously.
I actually bought 3 of the original US albums a few days ago from a local antique store! They had a nearly every US album but I only had enough for Meet the Beatles, Beatles VI, and Hey Jude.
I never knew of Jack Douglas before and I'm glad they highlighted him and his meeting with John, it gave me chills. Was gutted to find a video this morning where literally minutes after John was shot Jack is pleading to the authorities to see Yoko as he just saw them in the recording booth doing his production work.
Watching the documentary after visiting Paul’s photo exhibition Eye of the storm in Tokyo really make the experience magical. It’s like seeing the picture in person first and they show how it was shoot in the documentary. Paul telling you how it was shot in documentary after you saw it in person really is something beautiful.
Another great video Elliot! I watched Beatles 64 with high hopes of the promise of new footage and Scorsce involved and I think both parts of those expectations came out well. I've also seen almost every piece of Beatles footage under the sun thus most of the footage in the doc being not new to me, but I particularly loved the restoration and seeing how HD it was compared to the crummy quality I originally saw them in. Really tho, what I enjoyed the most was the perspective of fans in the film especially as someone who was born decades after The Beatles hey day but also a devout fangirl. That sense of spirit of loving them so much and understanding how amped up they were about them was so relatable. The concept of fandom now was develop and made with The Beatles so it was just a really great insight.

Great video as Always, I considered buying the US Mono boxset but couldn't justify the over $400 price tag. I instead resorted to eBay & bought the Capitol Albums, Vol. 1 for a more reasonable $75. It may only have 4 of the albums but is still an excellent box set
I love how complicated the Beatles American canon is. It really shows how much they helped to change the industry because albums really just used to be "a collection of songs" and that's it

Speaking of Beach Boys, I think you should do a video on Dennis Wilson and his solo album Pacific Ocean Blue. I always thought Dennis was glossed over in Beach Boys history and should be recognized for his contributions like Brian.
It's insane to watch this and the Get Back docu back-to-back and then consider how only five years separate them. I've barely changed a bit in five years. The Beatles changed the whole world twice-over in that span! also: You can't keep ducking us on that Ringo Ranking video. The people demand it.
When I was growing up in America, my family bought the ‘04 box set of The Capitol Albums, and I absolutely loved The Beatles Second Album. Such a good rock ‘n roll record. In fact, the man who wrote the intro to to the 2014 box set of all their American albums (including Hey Jude), said that back in the ‘80s and ‘90s when there was demand from American fans to release our versions of their albums, that that was the one he wanted released the most.
“Beatles 65” was the first Beatles record I ever heard. When I was 5 (in 1989) my dad started rebuying Beatles records and then would give me his original mono LPs. So unlike a lot of millennial Beatles fans, I grew up with the Capitol albums and they mean a lot to me.

When you mentioned The Beatles rejection of traditional masculinity, it reminded me of why i was a One Direction stan in high school. They were very similar in that way. The 1D boys cuddled, dressed androgynously, were soft and sweet. Not intimidating or overly sexual (kinda lol) and they also share a great sense of humor and a sense of anarchy. If they showed me in 2011 i would've looked like those 60's fan girls in the documentary ♥ cant wait to watch it!

Many of us would have welcomed a remastered version of the Maysles Brothers' original film (The First US Visit - much recommended, worth finding on DVD). Get Back showed was an audience happy to spend 8 hours with The Beatles, free from outside footage and commentary, so this feels like a lost opportunity to expand the original film with the extra footage.
I loved it because anything Beatles is a must BUT... I felt this part of the story, including a lot of the archive footage, was explored in The Beatles First US Visit doc. Thanks as ever for your superb content :)
yo that beggining..... i wouldnt have thought of that, nor have i. that was very well done, and worth the bit. for some reason ive never thought of the n64 (despite so many of the games having 64 in the title) in regards to thinking about the beatles in 1964, its soo obvious to me now, but wasnt just a minute ago. as a fellow creator, im sure plenty of ppl wont even say anything about the opening, and when i do cool or funny little bits like that and theres no mention, it makes me a little bit sad
Regarding the All My Loving cover that was playing over the JFK footage, it was then I realized that With The Beatles, the studio album that featured All My Loving in its track list, happened to be released in the UK on the same day as JFK's assassination in Texas. I don't know if this was an intentional detail or a coincidence. Regardless of that, it's poetic at least.
It was fascinating. Especially the old footage interviews with the girls, to be able to truly absorb what teenagers were experiencing at that time is worth the price of admission.
It's not just fellas who prefer physical media. I'd say that a large segment of their target audience prefers physical media. I know that there's a lot of people who aren't on the internet at all that would be interested to see the film. I'm glad that we did get Get Back on physical media. If it weren't that everything is exclusive to Disney, we'd probably get this and Let It Be on physical media too. It's just Disney wants subscribers because that way they make more money than they do from selling DVDs. It sucks because streaming is also worse for the environment due to the massive servers running 24/7.
I would be more interested in the complete Maysles footage interspersed with the complete Washington DC show, restored audio and video. Along with the complete Ed Sullivan restored audio and video performances in chronological order.
Great analysis - that's pretty much how I felt, as I watched it. As a kid, I loved Beatles 65, so the title didn't shock me. This makes me want to see Peter Jackson's touch up of the original Let It Be movie. At least that movie focuses on that song; it's ignored in "Get Back"
Elvis is like the coolest bad boy in the youth group outing, while the Beatles are like the boys who were too rowdy to be included in the outing so instead they had time to have an outing of their own.

Great video as Always, I considered buying the US Mono boxset but couldn't justify the over $400 price tag.
I instead resorted to eBay & bought the Capitol Albums, Vol. 1 for a more reasonable $75.
It may only have 4 of the albums but is still an excellent box set

I love how complicated the Beatles American canon is. It really shows how much they helped to change the industry because albums really just used to be "a collection of songs" and that's it

I always thought Dennis was glossed over in Beach Boys history and should be recognized for his contributions like Brian.

When I was growing up in America, my family bought the ‘04 box set of The Capitol Albums, and I absolutely loved The Beatles Second Album. Such a good rock ‘n roll record. In fact, the man who wrote the intro to to the 2014 box set of all their American albums (including Hey Jude), said that back in the ‘80s and ‘90s when there was demand from American fans to release our versions of their albums, that that was the one he wanted released the most.
“Beatles 65” was the first Beatles record I ever heard. When I was 5 (in 1989) my dad started rebuying Beatles records and then would give me his original mono LPs. So unlike a lot of millennial Beatles fans, I grew up with the Capitol albums and they mean a lot to me.

When you mentioned The Beatles rejection of traditional masculinity, it reminded me of why i was a One Direction stan in high school. They were very similar in that way. The 1D boys cuddled, dressed androgynously, were soft and sweet. Not intimidating or overly sexual (kinda lol) and they also share a great sense of humor and a sense of anarchy. If they showed me in 2011 i would've looked like those 60's fan girls in the documentary ♥ cant wait to watch it!
Hello from Rezza. Brilliant review of Beatles 64. I concur with every point. Can’t believe how much it got pre-emptively slagged, and even more so after its release. More early Beatles = more joy. What’s not to love?

B64 on N64 has so many Easter eggs. I love it!
Many of us would have welcomed a remastered version of the Maysles Brothers' original film (The First US Visit - much recommended, worth finding on DVD).
Get Back showed was an audience happy to spend 8 hours with The Beatles, free from outside footage and commentary, so this feels like a lost opportunity to expand the original film with the extra footage.
First US Visit was available on VHS and also DVD from Apple.
I still maintain that the title should’ve been America Meets The Beatles.

I was actually lucky enough to find a copy of The Beatles Story at a record store a few years. Quite the find.
The problem i had with Beatles '64 is that it didn't have enough Beatles. I bet the Beatles were on about 1/2 the time.

that was very well done, and worth the bit. for some reason ive never thought of the n64 (despite so many of the games having 64 in the title) in regards to thinking about the beatles in 1964, its soo obvious to me now, but wasnt just a minute ago. as a fellow creator, im sure plenty of ppl wont even say anything about the opening, and when i do cool or funny little bits like that and theres no mention, it makes me a little bit sad

I have the Mono, Stereo, and American releases on CD, which is a lot of fun but having them on vinyl would be great too!
Regarding the All My Loving cover that was playing over the JFK footage, it was then I realized that With The Beatles, the studio album that featured All My Loving in its track list, happened to be released in the UK on the same day as JFK's assassination in Texas. I don't know if this was an intentional detail or a coincidence. Regardless of that, it's poetic at least.

It was fascinating. Especially the old footage interviews with the girls, to be able to truly absorb what teenagers were experiencing at that time is worth the price of admission.
It's not just fellas who prefer physical media. I'd say that a large segment of their target audience prefers physical media. I know that there's a lot of people who aren't on the internet at all that would be interested to see the film. I'm glad that we did get Get Back on physical media. If it weren't that everything is exclusive to Disney, we'd probably get this and Let It Be on physical media too. It's just Disney wants subscribers because that way they make more money than they do from selling DVDs. It sucks because streaming is also worse for the environment due to the massive servers running 24/7.

I would be more interested in the complete Maysles footage interspersed with the complete Washington DC show, restored audio and video. Along with the complete Ed Sullivan restored audio and video performances in chronological order.
Great analysis - that's pretty much how I felt, as I watched it. As a kid, I loved Beatles 65, so the title didn't shock me. This makes me want to see Peter Jackson's touch up of the original Let It Be movie. At least that movie focuses on that song; it's ignored in "Get Back"
Elvis is like the coolest bad boy in the youth group outing, while the Beatles are like the boys who were too rowdy to be included in the outing so instead they had time to have an outing of their own.
