- Gerald Early, the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters and professor in the Department of English and chair of African and African-American Studies, talks about how black studies programs came to college campuses across America. Early oversaw a recent milestone at Washington University’s African and African-American Studies department, when it became a department in spring 2017 while he was program chair. It was Early’s second time as head of AFAS. He first served as chair in the early 1990s.
