Whoever is going to attempt this please be aware that the shifter knob is tight. It requires alot of force to pop out and 9 times out of 10 you will rip the wires right out of the OD Buttom Like I have accidentally. 1) Loosen the screws of the center console after removing the shifter bezel. 2) Then go into the armrest compartment and remove the bottom screws holding the entire center console down, lift e brake up, pull the center armrest console back or upwards to give you some space to get to the OD button connector. Push the disconnect tab or whatever is securing the connector to the socket and disconnect it. I used a tiny flat head screw driver to pull it up then pry the connector loose. I saved me so much aggravation. **3) The OD button wire has been zip tied by a tiny ziptie in the bottom of the shift shaft, it is wrapped in a certain way to avoid binding or getting in the way of the shift mechanism. Cut it loose.** - Updated July 13 2017 4) Proceed to pull the shifter knob with force. This will ensure you won't rip the OD button wires right off the OD button itself. A new button will run you 32 bucks USD from cjponey parts...I would rather save the extra money and do it right. Goodluck!
np I just updated it. I forgot to mentionthe zip tie ford used at the base of the shifter. that should be cut off so it can move freely otherwise you can still rip the wires accidentally.
Yeah, totally did this when I was putting everything back in, the main button popped out so I went to pull the knob off again and it got stuck so a little too much force and 40 bucks later, I get to replace it lol. When I first took the knob off though, the button and spring flew out. I assumed the spring went in the hole behind the long insert of the button but after it still popped out after reconnecting everything and after looking at it more I'm thinking the spring may go just under the button, against the wall, not actually inside the hole. Could you confirm this for me, please.

it should be very similar, ive owned mustangs from 80's models all the way up to the later models, and from the 96 model compared to the 2004, they were very little changes made to the interior, but after watching this vid you should be prepared enough to tackle your 96's shifter, good luck

I have a 1998 , and yes there is a bulb socket that takes one of those small kernel bulbs like for the back of the instrument panel, it is a twist out , much easier to access with the bezel out.
The knob you pull to turn on your headlights should turn left or right to brightin the letters on the shifter and the dash. Atleast that's how it is in my 2000 mustang
In removing shifter knob, it won't come off. Screw is out completely and I push in button and pull on handle and it won't come off. Any solutions would be helpful.
I can't seem to get the bezel out. I've removed the two screws on the left of it and when I pull on it, it feels like there's something holding down the right side. any advice?
Anonymoose Illuminate This is really old so I'm sure you figured it out but for others who may be curious, on the right side, there are two pegs, opposite the screws that are inserted into holes which you can see in the video. The bezel will pop out with some pull force. Just lift straight up. Not at an angle as you may snap the pegs.
Try using a long length slotted screwdriver 🪛 and carefully depress the lock release pin to the shifter below on the left side of the shifter ... Good luck
Haha it looks like water because that is what the UA-cam shakiness corrector looks like when applied to a vid. One of my vids looks like that too because I agreed to have the shakiness filter applied lol

Thats what happened to me..I messed up the wire...but does it have any issue if is damage? Like driveability problem if the (O/D ) wire is damaged?

Meade Helios - there's a bulb under the bezel. He doesn't show removing it but it's there.
Mine has carpet smashed in between the shifter and the wires so i cant really get to the torx screws. Any recommendations?

There is definitely a light I there. Mine is burned out on my 98. The bulb itself isn't a twist out though, it just pops out of you pull it gently.
Or you can put on 94-97 leather wrapped tbird/cougar knob. Exact same part with of button, but leather wrapped, stitched. Nice mod, cheap!
