Genuinely an amazing version. It is full of pain and anguish now because of the elongated vocals, plus the lower register of all the instruments makes it far more serious and dark. Absolutely love it.

Just did a little experimentation on AudioStretch. Pitch and speed seem to my (extremely unprofessional and probably incorrect) calculations to be different. Speed’s at around 50% of normal, which would make sense if this were from a 33 1/3rd record. However, the pitch seems to be around 1/3rd, which would make sense if this were from a 45 record. I’ll have to do further experimentations (that is, when I finally get around to fixing my 16-45 turntable). Hopefully I’ll make a follow up disproving myself.

I cant believe they forced Alvin into the studio after he shot up his girlfriend with that fatal overdose. They had to shove him into the record label's company car just as they shoved her stretcher into the ambulance. This recording perfectly captured the guilt he was trapped with inside the mic booth. The chambers of his heart being eaten alive. Not knowing by the time he finished laying this track down, she would be dead, and he would be laying her casket down as well.

The song is called "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland (the Hollands were brothers). The trio wrote the song for Motown Records in 1966, and you will find many famous 60's songs from that record (some by this same trio, called Holland-Dozier-Holland) defining their "Motown sound" like this one. Kahil Dhaliwal is right that The Supremes first perfomed the song, an archetypical Motown act, though many other performers have covered it since. This is the Alvin and the Chipmunks' cover, first released in 2007, which is a bit of a surprise, in their little-known album "The Chipmunks and The Chipettes: Born to Rock
." Like all Chipmunks records, this was first recorded using normal male voices (or a single male voice overlaid several times) at half speed, then sped up two times. Historically, the normal speed for these novelty albums was the lo-fi 33⅓ RPM. Thus, the original recording speed was equivalent to playing the final album at 16⅔ RPM, which is what we hear here. You might notice some analog artifacts from recording at such a low speed, but mostly what makes these tracks stand out is how eerie the recording sounds at original speed. It's almost haunting, and you can hear just how much pain the singer put in. I don't know who he was (the creator and original vocalist for Alvin and the Chipmunks, Ross Bagdasarian, died in 1972), but he really put his heart and soul into this song.
