In before the "vegan hate". We're big advocates of that fact that we eat vegan food all the time and don't even realize it! Vegetables, salads, plants and nuts are all vegan, so remember if you're a true food connoisseur - don't judge a meal by its title alone! We could've omitted the words "raw" and "vegan" entirely and no one might have known! :)
It's more the concept and the stigma attached with the title of a vegan as such and despite me personally not liking this episode as much, I can see the appeal of it have a vegan family member
I think you mean vegetarian as vegan is nearly impossible. A true vegan will not only shun meat but anything created using any animal product or byproduct. Nearly everything made has some sort of animal byproduct in it or used to make it. Even if it doesn't there was likely manure used to grow your vegetables and that was taken from an animal.
***** Chickens lay the eggs and we take the eggs that wont hatch. Not eating it is being wasteful. Also If you get eggs locally I feel that they probably treat the chickens nice. I don't understand how you could say chickens aren't treated nicely for the eggs. It's not like we go shoven are hands up their Uknowwhats and yanken an egg out. ... eww gross...
You know, you were closer to a Lembas Bread the first time around if you left out the bacon. Replace the maple syrup with honey. Then reduce the water and increase the honey, better taste. Also make the base corn flour and you'd be closer to the books. I'd use a protein powder to increase the heft, it comes in vegan varieties. Oh, and grind any seeds used to create a smoother texture. You can also use a better seed combo. Come on guys try one more time. You can do better. Third time's the charm.
itgaam What days?! Yes Tolkien was a linguist which allowed him to create convincing languages to enhance his fantasy world, but he was still a twentieth century author that understood his audience. "In those days," seriously give me a break.
+TesseriShira I think more people like the texture of whole seeds way more. Maybe if it's a mix? Like seed flour + whole seeds, i think that would work.
It's nice to see vegan friendly and gluten free recipes. My cousin is allergic to it and it makes her very very sick, so when I cook for us both it can be hard to have filling foods we can both eat, so thank you!
+Selene Herrod That's what I was thinking. The representations in the movies, as far as I've read on Lembas bread from Tolkien's descriptions, are entirely accurate as far as looks go. This version is far too grainy and seedy looking. Lembas isn't supposed to look like it's made from dirt. :\
+Selene Herrod I agree, but I think the recipe aimed to stay true to the actual purpose of lembas bread - to be fill you up and give you lots of energy :) ("A SMALL BITE CAN FILL A GROWN MAN")
+lucielm I would like to point out something - I once did a bit of looking into the meaning of the word "corn" after I first read the details about lembas production, and it struck me that Tolkien was using an older meaning of the word than modern times does. In modern times the word has become associated with maize, the American vegetable, but the term "corn" was once a general synonym for "grain" or "seed". For instance, "peppercorn", or "corned beef", where it refers to the salt used to cure the meat. So the "corn" used to make lembas is never defined in Tolkien's writing and therefore be anything. I did find a recipe once that basically made a kind of shortbread, which I think is true to the books as I faintly recall the books saying that it tasted sweet.
Mimi Sardinia That makes sense and we're missing a huge componant in that we don't know what the "corn" means. I assumed it's something like maize which would give it that sweet flavor and if ground really fine it could be molded like a corn tortillia. Those last a good while irl if prepared right.
now this is elf bread. last time you guys made dwarf bread, which actually sounds much tastier. the one with bacon should probably have a different name since it technically isn't lembas bread... how about sabmel bread? I know it's not very creative, but I don't see anyone else coming up with better names, so yeah.
***** This Lembas Bread seems more like dwarf bread since its made to be more of a granola bar than actual bread. Lembas Bread is described as being a light brown bread with a creamy white center. Simply take the bacon out of the recipe and the 1st recipe is more similar to how Tolkien described it. Not sure what Discworld bread is since I never read that series, sorry.
To all vegan haters; a friend of mine is vegan (a very sweet guy) and he made vegan chocolate cake for us ones; best damn cake I EVER had! And I'm a sugar addict.
afkdude123 I was addressing ore the large amount of comments hating on vegans. I love my meat but I wouldn't look down on someone who's vegetarian or vegan. A lot of the other comments are, though, which annoyed me.
I actually think I understand the secret behind the properties of the bread, having watched an episode of Sanctuary that made things a lot more clear. The secret behind the restorative properties of the bread lays in it's yeast. The elves, long lived as they are, have the time to cultivate and store the yeast in a highly specific way. Until the bread itself if baked, the yeast is stored under artificial lighting, only, for generations, never being exposed to true sunlight. This causes it to begin producing megadoses of Vitamin D, which causes the surge of energy in those who eat it.
Wow, now I'm a vegetarian (previously vegan so before anyone says I'm biased against this type of food I'm clearly not) sorry, but this looks and I suspect, tastes nothing like Lembas bread is supposed to, with the word bread being in the title I would have thought that would have told them what they should be aiming for when re-creating this in the real world. I also highly doubt that elves would have had a dehydrater (I know she said you could just bake it but shh I was just trying to make a point :P) I think Lembas bread was probably some sort of unleavened bread or at least that would be the closest thing we would be able to make.
Nice job guys, but if I'm gonna make lembas bread, I'm doing it the VEGETARIAN way, no meat but with animal products, because this doesn't look like bread, it looks like a weirdly-shaped protein bar. I tried a vegan diet and it did not sit well with my stomach.
I like how this is a polar opposite to the other Lembas Bread video. Like, Laura is so chill, healthy, really light, but then theres Harley who is quite loud and 'unique'. It was just really fun to watch them both, one after the other. :)
Very nicely done but sadly I prefer accuracy about practicality. Lembas was made from corn or the meal of corn (it's a special type of corn but still corn is corn) and the leaves used were Mallorn leaves and the closest thing to it would be birch trees. Still its a pretty nice version of it.
"very seedy..." "If I could put something on it, this would definitely be something viable for me to eat". Never once did they say it was good. *lawl.*
i LOVE laura and her show, i recommend everybody watch it even if you guys don't bother a lot with vegan food. she's entertaining, and the foods she makes always look super yummy!
Make anything from the Redwall Abbey series. It's got the most imaginative dishes of any book/TV series I've seen, and I'm sure it would be a dream come true for any childhood fan of the series.
If I knew you guys were gonna do the whole banana leaf thing I could've sent you guys a couple of leaves. There were some banana trees in my backyard up until last month.
the fun part about recipes like this is you can customize it any way you want. and a quick question since some veggies have to be cooked to have their vitamins and minerals to be fully triggered how does this work in raw vegan? does the dehydrator solve this? and I am a omnivore but if it looks good I'll eat it. I even made my own chocolate lembas bread filled with nuts, seeds, dried fruit, chocolate chips, oatmeal, and protien powder.
While the composition and ingredients may resemble something from an advanced nature civilization, I cannot help but think that it doesn't physically look like the LOTR's Lembas. The bacon packed Lembas had a much better visual resemblance, I don't see the reason to redo a video and make its ingredients more like the original if you totally missed out on the looks department and the flavor one too, judging by your words
***** seriousley? you must have really tried only shitty vegan food xD I have had even my best burger, vegan, it was so delicious! :D and cruelty free ^^

YAY UR BACK! And I love the cartoony foods you make! Please could you make a cheeseburger cake like in Steven universe when Steven gets the burger backpack or the perfect breakfast he made?
If you're wondering where to pick up all the ingredients for this recipe, most supermarkets have a special place to store things like Chia seeds and Psyllium Husks... They call it "The Garbage" Sorry, couldn't resist! Tried this recipe and it's actually very nice, PACKED with energy too, not quite up to the standards of real Lembas Bread, but better than the bacon laced monster they made last time :D.
I honestly imagined the Lembas like a Naan. Something like a thin bread with a lot of additives, like various nuts, raisins, etc. Such a bread already contains by default a lot of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Oddly, enough coating it in Gee (butter extract) seems to increase the shelf-life. What you did reminds me more of an energy bar, but then I lack whey and do some grinding/mixing. Chocolate might also increase the shelf-life under certain conditions (when stored cool, it can prevent it from soaking up moisture). When it comes to really long-lasting marching provision, look up Hyorogan.
I wish it looked more like the bread in the movie rather then just a bunch of seeds glued together .-. That's cool how they were able to make this though and account for a ton of people out there who may not be able to have the original thing
Need any banana leaves? Go to a Korean store and there will MOST LIKELY be some banana leaves, as my mom makes sweet sticky rice basically ALL the time.
I like both the first Lembas Bread video and this Lembas Bread video. Also, I don't care if food is vegetarian or not. I will respect a person's eating choices/opinion. Also, I'm the type of person that plans for certain occasions(Much like my father), I'd set up food choices of vegetarian, vegan, and other foods. Between Lembas Bread v 1(Bacon) and 2(No Bacon), I would eat the bacon one more, but I'll eat the bacon free one for long distant and time consuming trips.
I don't know why people hate vegan and vegetarian foods. I myself make vegetarian foods as side dishes to my meat, fish or chicken stuff so I have a more healthier diet. I use only a little of carbohydrates and I try not to eat anything with grains. I am a lot more healthy now that half of my diet consists of vegetarian foods. Bakazame Oh yeah, I forgot. Bread made almost entirely of seeds is really popular trend where I live right now. So I have seen these a lot lately, I even made a LOAF with lots of seeds and an egg, or something like that.
Bakazame i’m not saying this to be mean to all people who are vegans and/or vegetarians, but it’s mostly the ones that try and force it on you that are the loudest. Yes it may be a small percentage, but they’re still the loudest out of everyone of them. And I’m not saying this because I hate vegetarians and vegans, far from it. My brother and sister are both tvegetarian. Hell… I’ve had some good vegetarian food. I have nothing against it, I just can’t do it all the time. I mean, if you want to do it that’s fine, but just don’t force it on people who don’t want to do it. That’s my main issue.
I'm not a vegetarian or vega, but check out Laura Miller on Tastemade: "Raw. Vega. Not Gross." Her show is awesome! There are so many recipes that are dessert-based, snack-based, and not everything is made only of seeds!
Lembas bread is supposed to be magical cornbread. For this recipe, I would at least ground the seeds and the flours so that you get a smooth mixture. Add some cornflour and some leavening agent and make a regular cornbread but infused with more nutrition.
Vegan or not seems like a good idea for a camping or hiking food. If it does keep for several days the protein and carb fix would be perfect while out on the trail and you need that quick pick me up meal.
Yeah I think the fellowship would like the lembas bread with bacon much better than vegan lembas bread. Dwarf, humans, and hobbits all love bacon. I ♡ bacon. The presentations is excellent. Still a good and interesting feast of fiction.
was wondering if you all have the Nutritional Values for this amazing recipe? ... just made it! came out great!! but Family is asking about the NVs ....
I don't have any problems with vegan food but I do have to say that it doesn't look edible 😂 The first one didn't felt like lembas bread, but at least it looked like something edible 😭😂😭😂
I would sort of want a combination between the two. Not necessarily vegan. Something with flour to make it more like bread...but without protein powder and bacon? Maybe add some different seeds to the regular flour? I don't know. I'll have to experiment.
No offense, but it doesn't look very appetizing. Looks like something my parakeet would eat though, if he didn't fly away 3 years ago. ( I forgot to clip his wings :'(

Lovely. Lembas Bread. And look!
*Watches second video*
MORE Lembas Bread.
TheRainSnake I see what you did there. Clever.
I honestly am surprised when Laura started to talk... she really has a deep and heavy voice!
I was surprised but it's very pleasant!
Laura is tall, slender, pretty, and has flowing hair...hmmm....
Add pointy ears = elf.
that isn't an elf, that's vin diesel in drag!

+Gloria Holcomb With all the knowledge your packing, you should make a UA-cam series. haha
ArtsyViking Thanks
YOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Her voice was different than I was imagining it would be when I first saw her. THat's so cool
Its a fun recipe but its Hard-tack. Tolkien served in World War 1 where British Soldiers ate hard-tack or some equivalent.
This has massively more nutritional value than hardtack.
I don't know why everyone's knocking this. I made this for my best friend and he LOVES IT!
...
His pet budgie has never been happier.

Would you be able to grind all those seeds into a powder to make it have a more flour-like texture?
+TesseriShira I'd assume so, might make the texture way more edible

+LordVulpix you're thinking of Indian corn. Tolkien said Elvin corn and never says what Elvin corn is like.
Need banana leaves? No problem! Go to an Asian store (preferably a Filipino one but those aren't that common).
Or Vietnamese store my grandma uses banana leaves a lot
I have a banana tree...
In my country Banana Trees grow wild ^^
There's banana leaves at Mexican stores too lmao.
That chick has a very deep voice...I like it.
Fantastic, it's only missing one ingredient: 5 KG OF BACON.
This is Cram, also from LoTR, the laketown equivalent, if it was real lembas, it would taste of honey, as Tolkien said it did.
the Lembas bread in the movie looks like bread, but the stuff you guys made look like granola bars
Wow, that recipe was enthusiastically received.
Ragout Rabbit Stew or Asuna's sandwiches. All of them. and Kirito's butter cream thing.
had so much fun with you guys! #lembas4lyfe
Hi Laura, can I sun-dry this instead of using a dehydrator? I get a lot of Sun here in the tropics.
It looks like something you would hang outside for birds to eat. I am interested in what this tastes like

This causes it to begin producing megadoses of Vitamin D, which causes the surge of energy in those who eat it.

chia seeds + pureed fruit
stir, wait 10-15 min and enjoy

Zoe Branch right, but you can pick up pectin at any grocery store, I have never seen chia seeds (granted, I have never actually looked for them).

You can also use a dehydrator for making jerky. Lots and lots of jerky.
Yes, new video
This would be interesting! Do the Clementine Cake from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty! :)
You should totally make the mead from Skyrim. Like, Honningbrew mead or Nord mead. It would be a rad little alchoholic drink. :D
Skooma, is the most important
Yay! I love Laura!
Lembas bread is supposed to be magical cornbread. For this recipe, I would at least ground the seeds and the flours so that you get a smooth mixture. Add some cornflour and some leavening agent and make a regular cornbread but infused with more nutrition.
I have watched all of you videos all he way back from the Skyrim souffle
Might be great for camping or hiking outdoors. A lightweight snack that doesn't need water to rehydrate it.
Vegan or not seems like a good idea for a camping or hiking food. If it does keep for several days the protein and carb fix would be perfect while out on the trail and you need that quick pick me up meal.
I'm not bashing on her, but damn. I wish MY voice was low like that.
yeah it's kinda awkward when the woman guest has a deeper voice than the man host...
Yeah I think the fellowship would like the lembas bread with bacon much better than vegan lembas bread. Dwarf, humans, and hobbits all love bacon. I ♡ bacon. The presentations is excellent. Still a good and interesting feast of fiction.
was wondering if you all have the Nutritional Values for this amazing recipe? ... just made it! came out great!! but Family is asking about the NVs ....
did you dehydrate it or bake it?
i did a batch of both ... XD
Perfect and ironic as I'm on a Lord of the Rings trilogy extended version marathon woot woot
I ADORE LAURA!
Make human and kinshin souls from soul eater plzzzzzz. Ive been asking since u guys came back.
It may look funny but it sounds really good
I don't have any problems with vegan food but I do have to say that it doesn't look edible 😂 The first one didn't felt like lembas bread, but at least it looked like something edible 😭😂😭😂
Oooooh my Goddess, this exists???? I love you people so much
This is more like cram, the human equivalent of lembas bread : a biscuit that's nutritious but not tasty in the slightest.
Nerdy nummies did a little bit of a better job at making it more like the books and movies sorry lol I still love feast of fiction
I would sort of want a combination between the two. Not necessarily vegan. Something with flour to make it more like bread...but without protein powder and bacon? Maybe add some different seeds to the regular flour? I don't know. I'll have to experiment.
I'd pour on lots of butter to the batter!
I'm surprised Harley didn't say anything
oh my~ this make me hungry..... and now is 12:32am singapore
HOLY HECK! Her voice! So unexpected!
jesus that ladies voice is deep
U are awesome!!! Plz always make more
I WAS SHOCKED WHEN SHE STARTED TALKING CUS HER VOICE IS SO DEEP.
laura is my favourite human
No offense, but it doesn't look very appetizing. Looks like something my parakeet would eat though, if he didn't fly away 3 years ago. ( I forgot to clip his wings :'(
