For you who say Metaxas was fascist. He wasn't, his regime was nationalistic. He didn't opress the minorities that live in Greece nor he had any ideology simiral to that of the nazis. His ideology was purely conservative nationalism
He was not a conservative nationalist. He organised book burning Nazi-style, he brutally tortured communists and democratic citizens. Tortures ibflicted included nailing horse shoes, hanging till before death, removal of nails by pliers and being put to sit on ice columns. He admired Nazi Germany and personally guided Goebbels in his 1939 visit. But, for political necessity he could not stray far from the British sphere or influence. He has been wrongly whitewashed by his siding with the Allie under heavy pressure.
@@europeanamerican7658 Ok firstly the 4th august is not a nationalistic regime in the way of italy or Germany, it was more like patriotism. Secondly his regime did take inspiration from things that nazi Germany did, like burning books, but the soviet union also did the same so that doesn't mean anything. Thirdly if he really admired nazi Germany then answer me 1) why in Spanish civil war didn't send reinforcements to franco and instead sent to the spanish republic, like the ussr did, and 2) nazi Germany seeing that italy was losing real badly, before Hitler attacked Yugoslavia, the nazis sent to metaxas another truce, like Mussolini in 28th October 1940, but again he refused saying this: "ΝΑ ΥΠΟΤΑΧΘΟΜΕΝ ΣΤΟΝ ΧΊΤΛΕΡ! ΚΑΛΎΤΕΡΑ ΝΑ ΑΠΟΘΑΝΟΜΕΝ" which means this (CAPITULATE/SURRENDER TO HITLER! ITS BETTER TO DIE). Fourthly you said that he guided goebbels in 1939 during goebbels visit to greece. WHO DO YOU THINK GOEBBELS THE GODDAMN MINISTER OF PROGANDA SHOULD MEET? THE NAKED HOMELESS MAN ON THE ROAD? Of course he will meet the prime minister of that country. Also if you say that metaxas is fascist because he was smiling to goebbels, then that means chamberlain the British prime minister is also fascist, because he was smiling at Hitler in their meetings before the invasion of czechoslovakia. Also metaxas was bitter with his decision of liking Germany in ww1 and from then onward said and did things that benefit greece, in other words when he planned something, he was only thinking about its affection on the country (example the NO to the Italians in 1940. He knew that the English would win and knew that if greece did not join the axis they would be rewarded with at least the dodekanese that the Italians occupied).
@@europeanamerican7658 All the civilian tortures are lies of communists. Proof for that is that the communists did the same in the greek civil war 1946-1949 and also the communists were "kidnapping" children 7 to 18 years old to fight for them.
Pretty much everyone was a dictator back then, Metaxas was one of the light ones, many people Wrongly claim he was equal to the Nazis or the fascists.
