- The tall ship HMS Surprise went out sailing for a recent Citibank commercial and The Parade of Ships in Festival of Sail. Her crew uses the same techniques sailors in the 19th century would have used to set sail. Learn how you can come aboard at sdmaritime.org

She’s a beautiful ship, reminder of the times when ships like her sailed the seas of the world.
over 500 years of history.. i love it
the ships from the age of sail are so aesthetically pleasing, beautiful.
Imagine, circling the globe in this.
That would be my dream
Aleksander de Visser i´ll go with you! ; )
Aleksander de Visser Same!
Check out the Picton Castle Tall Ship.
Oh my goodness and the first shot with the birds...you can just see Maturin being summoned on deck by the crew - "Sir, sir, we've sighted your birds!"
What a beautiful montage. The ship looks so gorgeous in the shot at 2:20. I can almost hear Jack Aubrey shouting "Topsails and Staysails, light along there!"
I was on her in ‘95, when she was still the Rose. Glorious.
Great video- I crewed her back in 1994 on the East Coast when she was "HMS" Rose.
If only they were dressed traditionally! Thanks for the video. I am now going to watch Master and Commander.
I did a reenactment on that ship before master and commander in New York, pier 17. It was the Rose at that time.
I went to see her in San Diego; went early in the morning when there was nobody else there. I walked the deck with my headphones on, listening to "Pirates" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The whole thing is burned in my memory!
What an incredible sight this would have been to catch
My daughter and I have spent much time touring her. Occasionally they take her out into the harbor and fire her guns in a mock battle. It is something to behold.
"Killick! Killick there!" 1:49
"Aww here they go again. Scrape, scrape, screech, screech. Never a tune you could dance to. Not if you were drunk as Davey's Sow!" : )
The soundtrack certainly reminded me of Aubrey and Maturin playing...great books!
IT WILL BE READY, WHEN IT'S READY!

What a great view.. I love tall ships... I, like Jimmy Buffett, was just born too late...Pirate at heart... Thanks for posting...
If I were a pirate I would've named my ship The Devil's Revenge in Blackbeard's honor.
still looks gorgeous
I did not know that it was sea worthy I thought it was a stationary ship.Cool!
She is a beautiful vessel!
god, i miss the museum.
the music was super pretty.
beautiful vid
This footage makes me think of a movie I used to watch, awesome ship by the way.
Beautiful tall ship ! under any flag keep it sailing !
Nice to see the "topman" going over the devils elbow properly rather than through the lubbers hole like most would nowadays!
I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw him climb up to the fighting top properly :)
Beautiful ship! Thank you for sharing this video.
Beautiful.. just beautiful..
A dozen for the last man off the yard! I've been aboard Surprise while she was docked at SD; it would be wonderful to get to go for a sail!
A former paratrooper becomes a
Master and Commander in the
Kings Navy, which would be
George the Third, during Aubrey's
fictional tenure. So nice to hear
Aubrey and the good doctor
play for us along the way. A
wonderful job ! Sail on !
My favourite ship in Naval Action. She's only little, but she's a killer.
I'm finally going to visit that ship!!! :D the end of the month I'll be walking her decks like Aubrey himself :)
I remember seeing her as she was first built and named as the HMS Rose, in the Careenage in Bridgetown Barbados back in the 80's or 90's, lovely shop, still have photos of it there.
What a dream that would be if i owned it i would be a sea and loving it
me too
wanna sail together one day
God i hope that the next time the Hermione visits the US, the Surprise and the USS Constitution will meet her for a bit of sailing along the coast. What a sight that would be.
A woderful frigate and great movie ⚓️👍💕💕💕💕💕💕fan for ever
Nice to see a tall ship actually sail instead of just motoring with the sails slapped up there just for show.
Would love to see her in the next Tall Ship Races.
Magnificent boat ... Another era
1:57 Aubrey would be proud
A thing of beauty! If you are ever in the UK I recommend visiting the HMS Victory in Portsmouth. I think they might have Henry VIII's ship the Queen Mary there too. Although the latter is a ruin nowadays.
Henry VIII's 'Mary Rose' is now in a special museum where you can see the remains of the hull and lots of stuff salvaged from the wreck after 400 years at the bottom of the Solent.
Wow, that really stired something inside, Imagine being on that ship deep in the Pacific, going to those beautiful islands in that ship!
aye with bad grub, rancid water, watch and watch about and called out as well when all hands were needed so not enough sleep, great fun!
@@mikewalrus4763 Wasn't a lot different on land unless you were rich then. The navy was the closest thing there was to a meritocracy and there was potentially prize money. Factory workers were doing 16+ hours a day and living off bread and dripping/jam. You had 2 (mostly) guaranteed meals in the Navy and half a pint of rum a day. More than many on land. OK, generally you didn't get the skin whipped off your back as a civilian and the accident/drowning/disease/death rate was pretty high but it gave you a few options and a trade. You could move on to a privateer, east Indiaman, go to somewhere with more opportunities, blockade run or smuggle. In a factory and many other jobs by land you worked till you couldn't anymore, were a burden to your family or ended up in the poor house.
@@mikewalrus4763 as well as the likelihood of scurvy and getting syphilis from the tavern wenches in every port...
@@mikewalrus4763 and speaking of great fun, there's always the din, confusion, extreme danger, heat, and horror of being in a battle to make you realize what a lucky wretch you were the day you woke up on board, far out to sea, after having passed out in the alley behind the ale house the night before...
Sold to Maritime Museum of San Diego in 2007
It's Actually Called The HMS Rose, its just a replica of the Old HMS Surprise.
You have it backwards, my friend! HMS Surprise is a replica of the HMS Rose, it was renamed and repainted for the movie.
Same ship actually!
@@sarahpearson1504 not according to Wiki...Google it...I remember seeing her in CT when she was HMS ROSE ... LONG BEFORE she was used for the Movie Master and Commander...she was converted for the Movie. She was also used in Pirates of the Caribbean as I recall.
@@mauricepowers8079 I'm sorry if my previous comment was unclear, I'll try to clarify. The ship that is today called The HMS Suprise, is a replica of the historical HMS Rose and was originally named after her as well. She was rerigged and repainted for the film Master and Commander, and her name was officially changed. Since then she has been in a few other movies and commercials, including Pirates of the Carribean 4, where she was again repainted to play the HMS Providence. I hope that clears things up.
Im going to be sailing o that ship on day :)
Glorious
god how i love age of sail!
but even with ‘full sail’ they obviously had the ‘aux’ power going.
20th century (cemetary!) fox and peter weir really fucked up a golden opportunity to make an epic movie.
i mean, they just rushed in and did a slam damn, thank you mame rendition of the aubrey and maturin series...
if a billionaire someone with a real passion for the age of sail could male a real book to film series....
i can only dream
You Killed the Rose...OMG
oh what a surprise !
Just love it! I want to be on that ship!
Ps: Good music choice ;D
In my opinion it looks odd to see an 18th century warship being crewed by men wearing 20th century clothing. i.e. baseball caps and tilley hats. Can you make the uniforms conform more to the period? The historical accuracy would be much more effective, I think.
It wouldnt matter, they still have to wear modern harnesses when getting up the rigging and ratlines.
They are not filming a movie here.
@@mrschuyler Just my opinion/personal observation. No need to get offended!
who is playing the music, it absolutely rocks, Please somebody!!
Jack Aubrey of course.
Sounds like what an Aubrey and Maturin variation of The Bucks of Oranmore might sound like.
Killik! Extra rum for these men
makes me want toasted cheese.
The last part of this video illustrates why "topmen" were the elite of the enlisted crew. These were the guys who, during light winds or hurricanes, went aloft to make or shorten (reef) sail. That old saw about "Iron men and wooden ships" wasn't so far off reality.
I would like to see them in the North Atlantic !
So help me, I'll sail on the Surprise someday.
Time to holy stone those decks!
Nice frigate my dude
It's a frigate but looks more like a corvette ! 🤔🤔
@@uq1262 Though the original HMS Surprise was built as a French Corvette, her class bridged the gap between Corvettes and Frigates, but was mostly called a Frigate anyway.
@@uq1262 I saw somewhere it was built like 3/4 scale, or something. If I remember right, it was in a YT vid about the making of the movie.
Why is it flying an American flag?
It's US registered
Sir Boomsalot disgusting brink back the red ensign
Theo S didn’t mean it like that. The ship was built in Canada and is US owned. What I meant was that we should bring it to the UK.
So, is this the HMS Providence in PotC 4?
yep
"same techniques sailors in the 19th century would have used to set sail" xD
does that include the use of 2 screws out beside her rudder?
seriously though. her crew is as well drilled as they were in 1812. (well, maybe not the gunners.....)
Is there anywhere we can see and hear more about her? I can only ever find 3 or 4 min videos of her. I'd love to see a proper documentary about her....
LET FLY
Jack, you have debauched my sloth.
so I'm confused I thought the HMS surprise was actually the HMS Rose did they just renovate her and change the name or is there a real HMS Rose and an HMS surprise?
the ship was originally called the Rose, but was renamed Surprise after the movie Master and Commander.
What's the name of the song of I may inquire, it's a delight to listen to?
🎵Let the waters roll jack..🎵
Oh my god, what a beauty she is! That must be a real pleasure journey and great reminder of the old ship-of-the-lines day. Thank you very much for uploading ! Can you tell me where the "Surprise" is harbored?
The HMS Surprise is moored at the San Diego Maritime Museum, in San Diego California.
And the rest of the museum is wonderful.
Years of driving by the Star of India , whilst visiting relatives and I I didn’t know that it was a museum.
So happy that my granddaughter had time on her as part of a local school project. Have been on the Star and the Surprise since.
It’s a bit to far to visit again.
Seems odd seeing square rigger reversing.
Acheron Ship ?
Nice song. May i know the name of it please?
Shouldn't the flag on the stern be a Union Jack?
Wind was light. Why no courses?
can you upload the commercial?
This is the ship of Captain Aubrey and his friend the ship's doctor Stephen Maturin)
Where is the white ensign
While I might try climbing to the fighting tops to furl the courses, there's no way on God's green Earth that I'd try climbing the futtocks over the edge of the top. I don't care if that's the mark of a true topman or not.
Where's Capt. Jack Aubrey and Dr. Maturin?
Hey, What about Bolitho!
That rusty anchor would never do
The old HMS Rose.
i want it
brovo terima kasih
how does it go backwards with no sails?
It has a twin diesel engine. To dock in an American port, the vessel must be equipped with a backup engine of some sort.
Be nice to see some real seamanship...like getting underway w/ topsils/ jibs and not the fu..ing motor.set lookouts aloft...
Constitution crew should go to sea n train on this ship...sailing a square rigged ship 101
Don't recall seeing a motor in drydock...
Beautiful looking modern version of a 18th Century 6th Rate ship of the Royal Navy, as they were preparing to leave harbour I was expecting to see the crew hoist minimal sail the traditional way, what a disappointment to watch it `reversing out` using motor-power and not a single sail in use. When they finally began to set canvas, talk about a go slow, the `Petty Officers would have been using `rope-starters` on the crew to work faster. More interestingly, why was it flying an American Flag?.
because it's an American registered ship.
Acheron?
In the old days they would have towed her out with rowing boats, or with warps and teams of men on the dockside. No inboard motors then.
Do you still have this video file?
Hms rose...
fuck it...just rename her the USS Ranger. She already has the Stars and Stripes flying
Is this music by Travis Patton?
Themostamazinguy The music is by Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas and track is called The Pitnacree Ferryman :)
Matej Jakubík Thanks!
se.parese a la fragata constitucion de los estados unidos ke creo esta de museo y se conserva
i want
obviously not "the" hms surprise, but a replica, although a great looking ship, it should not be called hms, with stars and stripes flying, by all means call it uss surprise, but this ship has Zero historical connection to the Royal navy.
No more right to USS than HMS, USS being a Navy designation. But maintaining a ship like this is fabulously expensive; if they can pull in a few more bucks with the association with the movie and the books, more power to them, ua-cam.com/video/eyTJaW6JcA4/v-deo.html
Hey, how do I get on this ship?
It's docked at the San Diego maritime museum. If you live close by you can volunteer to be able to sail on their ships, or just visit the museum if all you want to do is walk around her. I've been and it's a great museum.
@@astrotrek3534 I want to learn how to sail on this
@@stevencasteel6799 They'll teach you if you volunteer.
Most capital.
Just because you played ac3 doesn't make you "love ships bro"
wrong flag too expesive to me
She's American owned....HMS Surprise is merely a stage name. But coming from a neo confederate one can understand your butthurt at the Stars and Stripes.
@@williameaton9058 I agree with Bill.
They outta sail it down to France and let off a few broadsides.
frigate about it
i'm disappointed, she's not really sailing if most of her power come from diesel engine and not the actual sails.
She was better when she was the Rose... to bad
falling from height hazard
Wrong flag.
Correct flag.
@@mrschuyler not if it's HMS mate. USS it would be.
@@jez6208 "HMS" Is merely apart of it's stage name. Its registered in the US so it legally must fly an American flag
