  • Raymond Chandler's private detective was brought to the airwaves in the late 1940's and early 1950's. After a stint by actor Van Heflin as Marlowe the role was taken over by the much better cast Gerald Mohr, who did a fantastic job as Marlowe.
This episode is from August 20, 1949.

I agree. I'd like to see a return to "noir" radio like Phillip Marlowe, Sam Spade, Dragnet, etc. Unfortunately, I'm afraid the attention span of people today isn't long enough to enjoy it. We've got the technology for it: sound effects, digital audio, and anything else needed. I'd love to voice a character on an OTR program!

Gerald Mohr is the bomb. Best radio voice ever.

One of the big movie studios told him he looked too much like Bogy to do a movie they didn't want any conflict. What a sad situation. He was Philp Marlow.

Too bad he never got to play Marlowe on film or television. He certainly looked the part.
