If you agree that smart is the best way to travel, you’ll want to give the Bellroy Transit Backpack a serious look. It’s a comfortable and stylish 28L pack full of well-thought-out organization-while still offering ample space in the main compartment.
If you've been around the gear scene for a while, you've probably heard of Bellroy. Its an Australian brand known for fashionable and dependable carry-on goods. And this new Transit Backpack is built to "flex between big commutes, adventure trips, and business travel.”
The Transit Backpack has everything you'd expect from Bellroy-and by that, we mean a sleek aesthetic, solid materials, smart pocket configuration, and a great blend of organization and open space. Although we have a couple of nitpicks, overall it's a solid travel backpack. And it could be a great option for your minimal one-bag travel backpack. Plus, we're convinced those small design details will continue to impress.

This one scored high on our Instagram aesthetic poll, what do you think?
I agree :) I'm surprised you guys didn't go for the Charcoal with the tan leather accents. That looks even more aesthetically pleasing!
We hear you, JelloG! All of the colorways are solid, but we couldn't not go all black... could we? 😉😄
- Rebecca
Pack Hacker which is the best leather backpack on the market? Is there anything better than the Tumi Alpha 2/Alpha 3 T Pass?
Is this the highest aesthetic score to date for you guys?
Adding in user questions is an amazing feature! Really great idea.
Glad you're digging it, Praxis-Cat! 👍
- Rebecca
Please saport my chanal
Great review! I love that you guys start incorporating and addressing comments from viewers :)

Definitely one of the better looking backpacks I have seen recently. That extra pocket with the laptop is probably something a lot more manufacturers should start doing. Its very handy to have for chargers and other tech.
Hey elpinto007 - we hear you, that extra pocket comes in super handy for keeping all of your tech gear together. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! 😊👍
- Rebecca
Are you going to review the Plus version? I would love to see that episode plus a comparison between the Transit Plus 38L and the Aer Capsule Pack Max.
This is my goldilocks bag. Big enough for minimal travel, small enough for work EDC, sturdy and well-designed without being overbuilt. I'll stay subbed to the channel, but with this bag, a 10L Bullet, and the CTB40, I'm set for a couple decades.
Hey Evin - that's awesome! It sounds like you have a solid collection going on here that's got you covered for a range of different travel styles and use cases. Thanks for sharing! 😊
- Rebecca
You may not "need" another bag for decades, but I wonder if anyone who watches packhacker vids could resist the urge to try a new bag after a few years, max ;) I'm trying to brainstorm shorcomings with my current bag right now to justify one of these.
You guys have an awesome format here, answering veiwers questions from your other channel (genius 👍🏼)
Glad you're digging it, djemp! We love hearing from our community. 😊🙌
- Rebecca
Dang, 86% like the look! I'm a huge fan, curious if they will release larger 35L bags. This would make for a great 2-3 night trip bag, especially if you can fit everything into a medium cube only, and a smaller toiletries bag on top to compete with the tech pocket they offer at the top. Fantastic review as always!
Glad you're digging the review, Steve! We're excited to see what Bellroy decides to bring out next. 😊🙌
- Rebecca
Love the water bottle pocket implementation-no more worrying about banging my bottle into cars, posts, or people. Looks like you could fit a decent zoom lens in the other one for quick access too if that's what you're into. The only other thing I would have liked to see (well, apart from a smaller pricetag) is better lockability.
Hey Jed - thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Bellroy Transit Backpack with us! And, yeah there's room for a zoom lens in the water bottle pockets which is handy for quick access, but it does lack padding if you want that extra protection for your lens.
Lockability is a great point, Jed, especially if you're planning on using this pack as a travel bag. 😊👍
- Rebecca
Just ordered mine in 'Charcoal' color. Hope it's even better then seen in this video!
Thanks for review.
You got it, Edgar. Let us know how you get on with your new pack. 😊
- Rebecca
Hey great video, I really like your consistent format.
Any plans for a video on 'hybrid' bags? I'm personally looking for a suitable EDC and travel bag. Only things holding me back are that the large compartment on most travel bags are kinda hard to use for organised EDC. Thanks.
Hey Athul - we're glad you're digging the content! Although we currently have no plans to create a roundup video of hybrid bags, we're always on the lookout for versatile packs, so keep an eye out! 😊👍
- Rebecca
Great review! Wishing I would have seen this before I bought my Black Ember Citadel yesterday!
This is the most aesthetically pleasing travel workpack I have ever tried on.
But after a week of daily testing, I had to return it and decided to keep my patagonia mini mlc 26l instead.
Pros:
1. Sleek and minimalist
2. Good quality material
3. Super comfy strap and backpanel
4. Separate tech compartment
5. Two concealable side pockets
Cons:
1. Packs less than my 26l patagonia despite it advertised as a 28l bag
2. The two side pockets will only comfortably fit small or slim water bottles. i have a rather slim 600ml water bottle and it is quite hard to take in and out of it
I know it I listed more pros, but this is ME, and unfortunately the two cons are dealbreakers for me. When I got it, I really wanted to be able to pack more compared to my patagonia, but it couldnt. And I just have to have a good water bottle pocket.
Still I woild recommend it to anyone who dont really need a water bottle pocket. It is so comfortable to carry guys
Thanks for sharing your insights! 🤙
-Eric
Love your reviews, and I love the Bellroy brand and how they think through things so well - but, this is too big for EDC and too small for one-bag travel IMO. Still, I am hopeful of that 35l bag sometime in the future...... then for sure i'm on board! Pack Hacker = Binge Worthy!
Hey MJS on the road - we get what you're saying, finding a bag that's going to work for you, really does depend on your travel style and use case. If you prefer to travel super minimally, then this pack could work for you as a travel bag. A 35L version would be a great way to meet in the middle for sure!
And we're glad you're digging the videos! We're constantly working on creating more content, so stay tuned. 😊🙌
- Rebecca
An extra 7 liters in that main pack area would go a LONG way. But I would not want to add an ounce of weight to the pack.
What is your go to EDC backpack?
So the question is if you had to choose one go to bag, the Bellroy Transit 28L or the Tom Bihn Synik 30?? Please do tell which would you go for.....Thanks in advance, love the channel.
Hey Michael - deciding between these two packs really does depend on you and your travel style. We recommend checking out the full written reviews for both of these packs so that you can compare the ratings, pros, cons and different features to help you find which bag will work for you.

I wish bellroy would make a line without leather. I really like the organization of their bags but just can’t do it.
Hey Not Your Average Vegan - while Bellroy ensures all the leather it uses is tanned under gold-rated Leather Working Group environmental protocols-something we appreciate here at Pack Hacker-these small accents do make this bag unsuitable for those looking to avoid animal products. Have you checked out Matt and Nat packhacker.com/travel-gear/?term=matt+and+nat they have some awesome products going on over there that are ideal for vegan travelers! 😊
- Rebecca
Nice review, but I think this bag seems like it's for someone who checks in a suitcase and this will be their carry on. The side pocket looked the perfect place for the passport. The size would suit some extra clothes and tech + camera to carry with you. Am I correct in this assumption? Happy to be corrected...
Hey Jon - we've found that how you use this backpack, really depends on you and your travel style. If you prefer to travel more minimally (some of our community travel with a 14L pack) then this bag will be a great option for one bag travel. But, if you like to travel with more items, then this pack will also be ideal as a personal item or daypack. 😊
- Rebecca
Is it okay if I link to your reviews on my webpage? Thanks.
Does this have the same capacity as the Aer Travel Pack 3 Small on the main compartment? As in can you also fit the Peak Design Medium and Small Packing Pouches in the other?
Great review! And thanks for answering my question. Cheers!
You got it Erry! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. And, keep those questions coming over on Quick Hits, we love hearing your comments and questions! 😊
- Rebecca
Hey Erry! We'd love to reach out to you, if you could email me on rebecca@packhacker.com or let me know the best way to get in touch with you that would be great. Hopefully speak soon!
Best, Rebecca
Are you going to review the new Transit Backpack Plus?
What is better for your opinion - Bellroy Transit Backpack or Aer Travel Pack 2 Small?
Hey Sergey! From our experience, there's no best backpack for everyone. It really does depend on you and your travel style and working out which specific features are a must-have for you. We're currently creating some content to compare both of these packs over on our Quick Hits channel, so stay tuned! packha.kr/QuickHits 😊
- Rebecca
I was wondering the same... Bellroy transit? Peak design everyday (i like the possibility to store a jacket sonewhat flat and outside by crossing straps but not looking like a total sporting goods item)? Aer travel pack small (though the fat top handle and overall look seems clumsy)?
@@riesemma Finally I chose Aer TP2 Small for travel. For me Aer is more usefull then Bellroy TB (but I like Bellroy Campus BP for city).
There’s gap at the top of the bag between the laptop compartment and the main compartment. Does anyone know if it has any functional use?
Excellent review, thank you!
You got it, Rebecca! 😊
- Rebecca
Hang on…you put two packing cubes in this and said it's wise not to pack another layer because otherwise you'd can't get into your external pockets. In your Synik review, you put a suit, and two packing cubes, and a dopp kit, AND all your work stuff, and you could still access all your external pockets. Then here you say the Bellroy's got more main compartment room because it's more squared off. >x-|
Hey Roger! If you pack another layer, this is more likely to eat up the space of the other pockets rather than decrease accessing them. So, if you're not planning on using these pockets, it's possible to add more into the main compartment, but this really depends on you and your travel style. With just one layer you can take full advantage of the pockets on the top flap and the exterior pockets. Hope this helps! 😊
- Rebecca
oop I just got news that Bellroy Australia is making a Transit Backpack Plus
For a bag that is meant for travel - the fact it doesn't have a luggage pass through is so baffling to me. I love Bellroy stuff, but none of them have a luggage pass-through which limits its use for me :-(
a question regarding the adjusting straps of the shoulder straps -> its essentially a kinda seat-belt material and from my experience with the Arcteryx Nomin, the adjusting straps will glide too easily over a short period of time and your shoulder straps will not longer be the same length as you initially adjusted to. This is amplified when your load is heavy.
do you experience similarly on the Transit?
Hey Wei - that's a great question! So far we haven't had any issues with the adjustment straps moving, even when the load is heavy. 😊
- Rebecca
@@PackHacker Thanks Rebecca!!!
You got it! 👍
- Rebecca
I have these same straps and hardware on my Duo Tote, and they don't slip at all. The design of the buckle works really well to keep things tight.
Please make a review on Pleatpack daily back pack , its looks intrusting like shifting option from 7L to 30 L.
I need one travel bag that beats them all... I'm torn between this the Aer, and the Peak design 30l. Please help me decide I'm sure indecisive.
We recommend taking a deep dive into the full reviews for each product! There might be a detail in there that will sway you one way or another 😃
-Eric
Hey Pack Hacker - what are the differences between the different colors/ materials. Is the black better / more water resistant or fur ask than the blue etc? Looking to purchase this bag and the black is more expensive than blue - is that due to the quality of the materials ?
Do u think my 14" x 10.8" laptop can fit in the dedicated laptop compartment?
Bellroy decided to make a transit plus version which is 38 litres. It’s on the wider and slightly exceeds the width limits. If not totally packed out and used casually as a moderately packed carry on. Will it fit and squeeze safely on the overhead bins of international airlines ?
Totally, you can go up to 45L with most international airlines since they often have large spaces for carry-on barrages so it's definitely a good size.
and it depends on which class you choose. With standard economy, I'd say 40L and you would have to squeeze a bit but in overall it's no problem.
@@orbispictus6127 Thanks so Much for the Info and the Video also. :) helps clarify my decision of the bag on flights
Is this too big for personal item bag in an airplane? (so like a purse)
Hi guys, great job as usual. How do you think it compares in terms of internal volume against the new pakt backpack, I know you mention you wouldn't add another layer of packing cubes, but the main compartment seems pretty deep, actually, and the official external sizing from bellroy is also big at 21.26 in x 15.3543 in x 7.08667 in . Thank you
@Pack Hacker can you review the mystery ranch 15L Riprucks, i want to see the features of the pack.
That is a good looking backpack!
Would in water bottle pocket fit Bellroy Classic pouch?
Hey KraKra - we just tested this out and the Bellroy Classic Pouch does fit in the water bottle pocket. However, it does depend on whether the pack and the pouch are at full capacity. If the pouch is at full capacity it's going to be a lot trickier to get into the pocket. 😊
- Rebecca
Hey, thanks for the great review. I have 2 questions though:
1. Size-wise is it possible to fit a small PD Camera Cube into the backpack or is it too high at 17cm?
2. You mentioned the differences in the colors and materials briefly but is there maybe more you can say about it? (e.g. how does the charcoal compare to black in terms of feel and durability)
Thanks
Hey Martin! Currently, we've only tested the black version, so we're unable to verify the feel and durability of the other colorways available. And, when it comes to the Peak Design Camera Cube, it's pretty tight, so it depends on how you're packing the cube and the bag, but it should just fit into the Bellroy Transit Backpack. Hope this helps! 😊
- Rebecca
The width of this bag and the plus are both misleading. When you don’t pack the water bottle pockets with giant bottles, you’re looking at a width that’s actually about two inches less than the spec sheet says
Does this have a trolley sleeve?
Does the water bottle pocket fit a 1L hydroflask?
Hey wonderlost xx - we tested this out with the YETI Rambler 36oz Bottle packhacker.com/travel-gear/yeti/rambler-36-oz-bottle/ but it didn't fit in the water bottle pocket. We did find that the YETI Rambler 18oz Bottle packhacker.com/travel-gear/yeti/rambler-18-oz-bottle/ fit in much more comfortably. Hope this helps! 😊
- Rebecca
Will Pack Hacker be reviewing the Bellroy Transit Plus 38L travel pack?
the Plus is pretty much the same, just bigger, shoulder straps slightly more comfortable and luggage loop available.
Count me in with the others who hope they come out with a 35L version. 🤞
P.S. Would you guys do a review on XD Design's 35L Bobby Duffle Anti-theft Travelbag Backpack?
Hey Desdemona - we currently have no plans to review the XD Design's 35L Bobby Duffle Anti-theft Travelbag Backpack in the immediate pipeline, but we'll check it out! 😊👍
- Rebecca
Is there a trolly strap or anyway to hook over a suitcase?
Unfortunately, there’s no luggage pass-through on this one. Thanks for watching!
-Eric
Multi -tool in the same pocket as your phone!? OCD ticks firing at 10. Sleepless nights ahead. *sigh
Please review tumi backpack
Hey Bill! We currently have no plans to review any Tumi Backpacks in the immediate pipeline, but we'll check them out. 😊👍
- Rebecca
can this fit under airplane seats?
Can you do a review on the tucano modo backpack
Hey PeterThai - we currently have no plans to review the TUCANO Modo Backpack in the immediate pipeline, but we'll check them out. 👍
- Rebecca
No problem
The 15 inch width is a deal killer. I can adjust the height for under the airplane seat.... But not the width. Nope.
The only thing keeping me from buying is no luggage pass through.
lol.. $250 for this backpack?? It's just a backpack folks.... $35 Amazon special works just as well.... oh hipsters!
Hey pesto12601 - you've got to find what works for you! Is the AmazonBasics backpack your go-to? 😊
- Rebecca
Good news pesto, it's actually just $239 😂 I hear ya though, it's pretty steep. For a long-term traveller who might use a bag like this daily over the course of years, you might be able to make a case to justify the cost. Peace of mind that you won't need to repair or find a replacement mid-trip might also be valuable to people. Bellroy is also a certified B corp, so some of the price goes to a good cause. Alright you've convinced me, I'll get one!
@@MrJed_s Yeah... I'll stick with some cheaper bags... and if they rip/break or tear.. recycle and buy another cheapo.... it is a nice bag though!
