  • In this video, we capture SIX famous and legendary steam locos in one day! Featuring 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, 34067 Tangmere, 45690 Leander, 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, 70000 Britannia & L&Y Lank Tank 51456 as scrapped sister loco 11305 all on 16th March 2024!
This video features an express passenger loco from each of the Big Four in GWR, SR, LMS & LNER plus BR & a pre grouping loco from the L&Y thrown in there too taking place on the mainline on Shap Bank and Leyland Station and on heritage at the East Lancashire Railways Legends of Steam Gala.
We start the mega day at Salterwath on Shap Bank where we witness the very rare sight of a GWR Castle Class 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe climbing the famous 1 in 76 gradient on the WCML as she charges up the incline making a very fine sight and sound proving how good the Castles are at hill climbing whilst she hauls the outward lef of The Shap Mountaineer from Birmingham New Street to Carlisle via Carnforth (Where she would get on).
With both tours running late we fast forward 19 minutes later to capture SR Unrebuilt Battle of Britain 34067 Tangmere making her channel debut hauling The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from London Euston to Carlisle via Carnforth (Where just like 5043, she would get on). The Spam Can is seen flying up incline with the majority of work being done by Class 47 47815 Great Western from the rear but this was expected.
We then left The Lake District to head south for the East Lancashire Railway for their Legends of Steam Gala featuring guest locos 45690 Leander, 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley & 70000 Britannia 16th March 2024!
We start our afternoon at the gala capturing LMS Jubilee 45690 Leander departing Irwell Vale as she makes her way towards Rawtenstall on her penultimate day on the ELR before she leaves for the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway prior to visiting the Mid Hants Railway & Epping Ongar Railway before withdrawal for overhaul.
We next capture LNER A4 Pacific 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley crossing over Summerseat Viaduct and entering Summerseat Tunnel making her first appearance on the railway in around 10 years.
Between seeing the big engines we next put our focus onto L&Y Class 23 Lanky Tank 51456 running as scrapped sister loco 11305 as she takes a local service to Ramsbottom where she storms over Summerseat Viaduct making a very fine sight.
Our final shot of the day on the ELR takes us to Ramsbottom to capture BR Britannia Pacific 70000 Britannia as she barks and whistles away from the station showcasing just what a beast she is whilst making her way towards Irwell Vale to end off the day on the East Lancs Railway.
We finish the day we headed back to the WCML to Leyland, just south of Preston to capture one final shot of 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe where she storms through on the fast line hauling the return leg of The Shap Mountaineer from Carlisle to Birmingham New Street to end off the day in great style!
And now for some bonus footage of 45690 Leander running on the ELR 22nd February 2024!
After a mornings bash it was decided to capture Leander a couple of times during the afternoon
We first see the Jubilee powering and whistling nicely away from Ramsbottom on a service for Rawtenstall
To end off the video we see Leander crossing over Summerseat Viaduct and whistling into the tunnel after making a stop at Summerseat Station to finish the video with one of preservations finest engines!
Overall we have never had such a day where we have seen a vital member of each of the Big Four plus BR (The Big Five if you will...) in one day and it real credit to Vintage Trains, The Railway Touring Company, West Coast Railways and everyone involved at the ELR gala for making such a video possible as I could never have dreamed for a day of this magnitude!
It was really great to see them all with even a new addition to the channel in Tangmere, it truly was a great day that I will never forget.

Great video, I wished I had made it to the East Lancs Galla but because of the poor weather forecast decided to give it a miss.

Thanks very much, Alistair! The weather was certainly better in the morning at the Lancs than it was in the afternoon that's for sure
