I thank my lucky stars that I got to watch Willie Mays all those years when he played in Frisco and every time My Dodgers were telecast on KTTV channel 11 in L.A., back to L.A., with Vin and Jerry Doggett calling the games, I was in pure awe watching Willie play....it was the best rivalry in MLB . RIP Willie.....and thanks for enriching my young life as a kid and a teen
I watched the Giants on KTVU channel 2 in the bay area as a young boy. I keep saying that I have NEVER seen a Dodger home game crowd give a Giants player a resounding round of applause like they did Willie every time he came up to the plate to hit or whenever he made a play!! Remember that?
When he retired he was definitely top five career home runs. He was actually number two. He was a record holder and a number of other categories when he retired as well. And in some of those cases he continues to be the record holder.
I became the assistant sports editor on my high school newspaper 5 years after Mays retired. I went to the library and read a sports encyclopedia to get myself up to speed. I read about football, basketball, soccer, boxing and of course, baseball. I went into that library idolizing Bob Gibson and Lou Brock from my hometown team, the Cardinals. I came out absolutely worshiping Mays as the GOAT.
@@benniecurrieaha another St. Louis boy. I can't say I ever understood how great Willie Mays was until about three years ago myself, but, Willie Mays was, as I think John Miller put it, was better. He was simply better. It sort of makes your jaw drop.

More Black Americans played MLB in the 1960's than they do today!
