- GIMP tutorial on how to make a cut out of an image with the lasso tool/ free select tool. In this GIMP how to I show you not just how to make a cut out with sharp lines but also how to make a cut out of a picture of cute furry animals. I use a cute kitten as example.
You can use the same technique to make a cut out of a cute kitten or dog photo in Photoshop.
It still works even in the newest version thanks for making this video
Thanks mate . I have found another easy way.
1-open your image
2-right click layer,then transperency,then add alpha chain
3-select fuzzy select tool
4-delete
5-save
thats it
I use gimp exclusively - great software. And I have been avoiding cutting out people and moving them, but just the feathering tip worked wonders. You have expanded possibilities with Gimp. Thank you for the great video. Cheers Rick - one suggestion: introduce yourself at the beginning of your video. Thank you.
Followed the steps perfectly, pressing delete does nothing. FML. Thanks for the vid anyway, good stuff.
If delete doesn't work, right click on the unselected section, go to edit and press CLEAR. it should work
@@arish8565 holy shit thanks dude
thank you, very nice tut, and cute kitty too. I need lots of videos on the basics of Gimp, like how to use the color pallette, coloring in after drawing an object, and so forth. thx!
ok i wuz wondering how to do that, glad u showed the feathering, makes cutout look much better
i just want to say, thank you so much, ive had gimp for a while and it just hasnt been clicking, but thanks to this video i finally get it.
Thank you. For a long time I have been trying to work out how to do this and not succeeded. Your video was very clear and I am now using the lasso.
You've dug me out of a hole again. Thanks for the effort you put into these great tutorials.
Thank you! I've watched at least a dozen other vids on removing background and they were terriable. They never fully explained. Then I found yours.....perfect. Once again thank you.
I'd watch three other videos on this subject and didn't get it. This one was the best.
it feels good to hear a woman's voice in tutorials
Excellent, easy-to-follow directions for using Gimp. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. *FOR USERS OF 2.10.3 AND HIGHER* . Once you have completed the loop on your selection, you need to choose another tool from the tool bar in order to change the selected area to dotted line (now it is active). Hopefully the nice people at Gimp will sort this out in time.
What a fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing the technique. I can't wait to try it...
DAT KITTY IS SO ADORABLE
excellent. thank you. looking forward to future tutorials.
You've dug me out of a hole again. Thanks for the effort you put into these great tutorials. And the sexy voice is a real bonus!

You make very great tutorials. Please keep them coming! By the way, your English is great, so please don't pay any attention to those who may think otherwise! Thank you!
These tutorials are great! I'm pretty new to GIMP and this helped me a lot :)
Your English is great, nevermind the hating comments. Thanks for the great tutorial and I hope I'll see more of your videos. Such a great channel. Very pleasant voice :)
I am a newbie to GIMP. How would I change the checkered background to a green background. Thank you.
Thankyou for this tutorial, I didn't know the lasso could do that, lol.
Took me a bit of effort to do this but got it done!!. Subtle differences but it helped alot!
you're Dutch, just know it! helped alot btw!
Hahah that's the first thing I thought about as well!
Though this is an old video it was the best and simplest explanation I've come across. Superb! Thank you. And I just subscribed.
Actually this is the best video I've seen on this subject. Thank you.
Very good, clear and precise. A lot to absorb, but I think it will be worth it. Thanks.
your accent makes me happy
how did you get that orange circle when your free selecting? im assuming that's how you get the faded look on the outside of the kittys selection line
@GIMPtricks do you have to render it or something cause when i post i up i only get the background and none of the fonts or images X)
Few words can say thank you enough. You saved me so much time!
Excellent video - thank you so much! As a newby to Gimp - after much trawling the i/net it was the only one easy to follow and execute for myself on the first attempt :)
ps - i'm on windows 10 and using gimp 2.8
Thank you for sharing. It was a wonderful tutorial.
Love the video; excellent tutorial. I have a question though, when I open my program only the main thing pops up and the one on the right the, "toolbox" Do you know how I can make the other thing on the left side come back up? I Appreciate it.
Good guide but unfortunately the final cut picture is the same resolution with the original picture... Is there any way to fix it?...
Followed all the steps, but when you create a new layer,There is nothing under my left tool box, Like when you clicked on white box on left side I dont have that box just the tools up top???
Thank you so much for posting this! Helped a lot! It was very easy to understand and worked perfectly!
Very nice tutorial! Thank you!

How the hell do u bend the lines of this tool! Every tutorial I see they can bend it normally but I cannot! Am I supposed to click smth while trying to bend it inwards or outwards??
so how do you save the png . also press enter after selecting with lasso tool
YOU. ARE. MY. HERO.
So helpful! Thanks very much
Omg!! THank you very much!!!!
Now, I know, how can I cut the images, like that!!
Thank you very much!! It helped me a lot!!! Thank you!! ^^
ok i have a question,is there any way i can draw a cartoon of some sort and than just crop that image out to use without having the whole background? So basically i want to import the cartoon character to post on a flyer without having the blank background around it.
when your done making your creation in gimp can you only print it? or can you post it up like a sig for forums?
Nice tip! I am realy enjoying your excelent videos. They are so informative and clealy explained, well thought out and easy to follow. You are a brilliant teacher!!
Thank you so much I have learned a lot
do you know how to move what you select with the lasso tool? because in my drawing the legs of my character are to long and i want to shorten them without erasing it.
Great video!
Would you mind sharing an alternative to simply pressing delete to remove background?
can you move or center an image this way as well? my picture is a little off center and i need to pick it up like i can with text
silly question perhaps... what if you're working with mac and there is no 'delete' button on your keyboard? (backspace doesn't work)
Use the fn + backspace button to delete
Kevin Mc Elligott Backspace still doesnt work for me on PC and FN + Backspace doesnt work neither does ALT+Backspace or SHIFT+Backspace or SHIFT+ALT+BACKSPACE or ALT+CRTL+SHIFT+BACKSPACE.
how do you remove a dot?
nvm, I found it. It's backspace to remove previous dot.
Needed this for making my mobile gaming thumbnails haha. thanks!
when I do this there is a giant white square behind the cut-out image how do i get rid of the sqaure so just the cut out image is there...im trying to put the cut-out image on top of another image..thanks :)
i wanted to do this because theres like a white border around the picture when i fill in the white part with the paint bucket is there a way to get rid of that?
Which gimp theme is that? Or why is the programme black?
all i want to do is make a free form selection, then move the empty selection around, why is that so hard....
Can it be done?
Nice Tut
Thank you for sharing. I found your video very helpful, and so I am subscribing.
Hi, I'm trying to take an image of a person and lay it onto a scenic backdrop. I'm following the instructions here but when I use the lasso tool and then invert selection and delete everything around what i've lassoed, I wind up with nothing but white space there. I can't get that white space to show the background scenic image. Any suggestions?
i am using the laso / free select tool....how do i undo a line. i go smoothly then have an error and am having to throw the entire thing away and start over b/c there is no undo the last move button....where is the button?
thanks.
ps your english is good. someone saying negative things about your accent clearly is not able to speak multiple languages.
how to multiply select two parts using the free select tool. because I want to cut some text from one image to paste into another image.
