This is the best tutorial I've ever seen. I believe this is because you know how to teach. Many people know GIMP, like many people know Chinese or how to fix a television. But that is not the important thing. Your teaching method is very good. You avoid the irritating tangents and "small talk", you avoided a long, useless introduction, you refrain from whipping your cursor around for no reason, you say precisely what you are doing, without useless comments, and the pace of your speech is good. Kudos to you!
I spent literally hours trying to accomplish this via steps learned in other tutorials. Within 30 minutes of watching this video I had fixed my son's school picture (red gradiated background) to a grey background, including the bits shining through his hair. Wonderful work, thank you for posting it.
I have watched many gimp tutorials and found this to be the best so far. I love that you had audio that explained what you were doing and also moved slow enough for me to follow along. Thank you so much!
You're a genius! I simply don't have a 'computer' brain and what you are able to do amazes me. Thanks for helping me to understand how much work is involved in using GIMP.
Thank you for such a clear and well made tutorial ... I have been GIMPing pics for SL for ages and its always taken so long to do the hair bit by bit ... thank thank thank
Fantastic, thankyou. I have been trying to do this for ages watching someone elses video but I kept failing. Watched your video once and got it first time :-)
excellent tutorial. most of the gimp youtubers today don't explain/teach these kind of easy techniques because they want to sell their techniques in websites like udemy for people who can afford their fees. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge..👍🙏👏
I've watched a few vids of yours, and I have to say I love that you don't beat around the bush, you don't have music playing in the background and you don't take forever to say what you mean. I'm pretty good with the things I know about Gimp and I'm great at figuring stuff out as I go but, darnnit, there are just some things someone needs to teach you. You're a GREAT teacher! Thanks for the vids. I would also love to know what you use to record your desktop and how to Zoom also! Thanks!
Thank you for keeping this simple and effective. Great technique for getting 90% of the way there. And your technique for using clone to fix the color is a game-changer for me. Awesome!
Another way to get rid of the white lining would be to edit the layermask with the curves tool. Either blur it and then level it with the curves, or try the curves themselves. That way you can keep the original hairline and if you get it to work it can be faster than using the copy tool. Great tutorial btw :)
I have to say, YOU ARE TOTALLY AWESOME! I have been working working with Gimp for several years now, and am quite proficient. Creating a .png file from .jpg has always confounded me in the past... I've always taken the long way around, with the fuzzy select tool. Now I know the quick and simple way. Thanks for sharing... (5 Stars to you).
Oh my gosh - I've seen similar tutorials (removing background from hair) and this is the first one that actually made sense to me! Excellent job! Thank you
I found this concise, informative and incredible that you got all that and enlargements of controls, every second was full of detail no coughing, stuttering or hesitation, very professional presentation thanks.. Can i assume that a layer like this could remain with a transparent background and layered over another photo and if so have you made a tutorial of this?
This tutorial was fantastic thank you so much! I had to do some funky stuff with my particular image to get the masking to work (background was too similar to the flesh tone and uneven lighting) but you saved me SO much grief with getting the hair to look normal!
I've been doing this the hard way using the wand and selecting the backround(usually easier than doing the hair), feathering the selection, then making that transperent. It does have the advantage of preserving the original image better as you don't get the the issue she shows at 4:20 and hence no need to clone.
I wish I'd known how to do this YEARS ago....excellent tut; I'm subscribed, and am gonna start learning 4 real...1 lesson a day 4 60 days....thanx, teach!
I'm going to try this tutorial. I'm under the assumption that same idea applies if the subject is African-American with a brown complexion and black hair. Or sjhould it be easier since the hair color is already a stark contrast to the background if the background is a lighter color. Thanks for your help!
Thank you! Do you have another video, removing the background of the subject. e.g. a person sitting on a stool/bench. Remove the background but not the stool/bench? Gimp 2.6 is new to me from 10 years of Adobe photodeluxe 1.0 Business edition (discontinued) on a still working Dell windows 98. Thanx loads!
Your tutorials are fantastic!! You have helped me so much!! Thanks you!!! I have what is probably a stupid question, but how do I make my brush larger? I have it on the largest selection, which is "circle19", but it is sooooo small. It takes FOREVER to color the whole face!
Umm..... I enjoyed your voice lady.... Fell in love with it actually.... i just love the way you speak..... cool and huh..... very nice tutorial.... Thank you for creating one and keep making such tutorials.... Have a great life
First of all, thank you for tutorial, really helpful and straight to the point, in second, for someone that is used to photoshop and want to try the alternatives, this is a mess
That's the problem with some open source programs: they are really powerful, but not so easy to use. Gimp and Blender come to my mind. But they are free and if you are interested, then you will learn it by using them and won't have to pay anything. Anyway, I also have to say that the Adobe software isn't easy either. Specially if you have never used it. I guess for you is easy becuase you have used it. But somehow I think their options are hidden and hard to find.
this is just the video I needed, I followed step by step, but I can't get my paintbrush to color in like yours did. clicked on paintburch, background color. moved the mouse around and nothing. what am I doing wrong. thanks RR

hi nice tutorial....although I need to put a person with long hair similar to the picture you used for this tutorial into a white background. Now, I've gone far enough to cut her out of the background using the path tool but the background colour remains in her hair. How do I put her in a white background and also remove the old background colour from her hair? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Been sitting here for hours and can't get it done!
Bedankt daarvoor.
Had the same problem, I don't know the solution either. I do know that if you go one point ahead you can move the previous one typically. Though I've had edges of images not take the points near the edge etc...
@GIMPtricks Hello, I'm a rookie with Gimp and tried to use it for the first time using this tutorial. I tried to do it with a picture of someone who had blond hair and the sun was sort of shining on it from one side but on the other side you just saw a normal (dark green) background . When I tried to use your method I couldn't manage to get the contrast between the hair and the background very well because the sun and the hair had sort of the same colour. I'll continue in another comment..

I've seen tutorials on this subject 3 times in the past, yours as much better, as it usually is.
You have a great manner of teaching step-by-step. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
I tried a couple of different tutorials and methods before I found yours. Yours is the best! Thank you for explaining so clearly how to achieve this!
Thank you for such a clear and well made tutorial ... I have been GIMPing pics for SL for ages and its always taken so long to do the hair bit by bit ... thank thank thank
Fantastic, thankyou. I have been trying to do this for ages watching someone elses video but I kept failing. Watched your video once and got it first time :-)
GIMPtricks, you are outstanding! Thanx again for a clear and to the point tutorial.
excellent tutorial. most of the gimp youtubers today don't explain/teach these kind of easy techniques because they want to sell their techniques in websites like udemy for people who can afford their fees. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge..👍🙏👏
The clone tool is what really sets this apart from other tutorials. I usually avoid brushing stuff in myself, but this made it look less intimidating.

This is the best tutorial I've seen yet on doing anything in GIMP. Thank you very much and keep it up!
Saved my day, couldn't work it out until I had seen this. You have got my subscription
Hands down the best hair masking tutorial I've seen so far. Fantastic job!
The viewer to like ratio is highly suspicious though.
Thank you for keeping this simple and effective. Great technique for getting 90% of the way there. And your technique for using clone to fix the color is a game-changer for me. Awesome!
THANK YOU!! I have curly hair and have been having a hard time cuting myself from pictures. Your tutorials are always the best.
Very well done and so helpful. So much better than most tutorials I've seen for Gimp and thank you so much for the lesson.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been looking for a good, clear tutorial that actually EXPLAINS how to do it!

Thank you
This tutorial is going to make my editing so much easier. I think I love you.
This video tutorial is amazing. It's really nice to make PNGs now without having leftovers of the background. Thanks so much!
Thanks Joley, this is so much easier than zooming and using the Lasso tool.
This is the best tutorial I have seen on isolating hair in GIMP! Thank you! I need to go and try this out!
This tutorial was fantastic thank you so much! I had to do some funky stuff with my particular image to get the masking to work (background was too similar to the flesh tone and uneven lighting) but you saved me SO much grief with getting the hair to look normal!
Awesome! I'm a Gimp noob and quite a ways from doing this kind of thing, but it's nice to know what I'll be able to do eventually! Thanks so much.
This is just great! After I successfully followed your directions I was siting in front of the monitor speechless! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! :D
this is literally the most helpful thing ive found so far
I did this from time to time but never came up with the idea of cloning! Great video. Thanks!
Such an elegant way of achieving this!
thanks so much! Your videos are answering so many questions about things in both gimp and photoshop! :)
this is going to help make the cutouts in my yearbook designs so much better! thankyou :)
I love you I love you I love you God !!!!! I tried in million way to get hair perfectly and now this video shine me.. thank you so much !

Wow, this was more informative than a couple classes I took at college . . lol , because it's in a conveinyent video format :]
Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I have returned to it many times.
This is very useful, I have often had trouble with hair. Thanks!
I wish I'd known how to do this YEARS ago....excellent tut; I'm subscribed, and am gonna start learning 4 real...1 lesson a day 4 60 days....thanx, teach!
Thanks a ton! Your tutorials are absolutely amongst the best!
You are a total life saver! :) ty...still learning gimp but you have just made it simple to use. Give great direction. TY TY TY

Or sjhould it be easier since the hair color is already a stark contrast to the background if the background is a lighter color. Thanks for your help!
Brilliant! What a great idea, cutting out hair is always such a pain. Thanks!
Still the best tutorial on this and it's 12 years old!
Great tut., very instructing, i always have that exact problem. i wont using it right now, but i will soon enough. It goes to favorites.
Thank you! That is very helpful and I am impressed by your mastery of Gimp technique.
Stunning good lesson to achieve a difficult visual edit task with ease.
Thank you! Do you have another video, removing the background of the subject. e.g. a person sitting on a stool/bench. Remove the background but not the stool/bench? Thank you make it sound doable. I look forward to trying it.
Versions have changed over the years but the concept is the same.
very good tutorial covers a lot of points in an easy to understand way.
Thank you for this great presentation
I always come back to this video. I can't seem to remember how to do this. Anyway, thanks for all the help.
Wow. That was concise, informative, and accurate.
VERY well done!! Thank you so much.
This was very nicely done, and timely. thanks.

She passed 24-10-2018
@@wilstijger1958she was a beautiful person, life is just so fragile, its almost hello and goodbye. RIP Gimptricks.
@@wilstijger1958 oh bad :(
Thanks by far the easiest way for me to cut out the background.
Brilliant tutorial. Deleting background from a picture which contains details like hair can be time consuming.
Wonderful tutorial. Thank you so much, Anita!
感謝老師教導‼️🙏😑😊
Great way to explain the procedure. Found it simple and very helpful. Thank you!
what i learned..............choose images without hair LOL
First of all, thank you for tutorial, really helpful and straight to the point, in second, for someone that is used to photoshop and want to try the alternatives, this is a mess

This is awesome. I never knew there was a clone tool! And I love your accent!
Incredible tutorial!! It inspired me to make an updated version using different technique. I've done it on my channel.
thank you very much! it was very helpful! I use it in other images... not only ones with hair and it worked perfectly... so thanks...
this is just the video I needed, I followed step by step, but I can't get my paintbrush to color in like yours did. clicked on paintburch, background color. moved the mouse around and nothing. what am I doing wrong. thanks RR

I've been wondering how to do this for ages. Thank you so much.

Do you have a tutorial for cutting out more complicated backgrounds?
VERY helpful. I never knew of this technique.
Amazing!! Your video is perfect, you really make this a process that one can learn!!! Thank you!! Keep up the good work!!
Incredible. Thank you for this great tutorial
Can you do a tutorial on how to remove stray hairs? and what is the equivelint of THE SPOT HEALING BRUSH?

I'm curious, where did you get the theme you use? Plus, great job lol. Big help!
great! Thank you!
I followed your instructions and everything worked well except when i added a graphic background seemed to seep though do you know why?
Whoah. I didn't know you can do that in GIMP. Subscribed!
gimp tricks what if the background has different colors haw you can make it one color
Great job. Keep these tutorials coming!
How do you undo
Excellent tutorial, GIMPTricks!
