Some great options and a great, honest review. Thank you. As a rider, with well over 40 years of experience across a multitude of bikes, inclusive of racing throughout the 90’s, with two wildcard entries in WSB. I’m not only going to be test riding the one with the lot, I can also see myself making room for one. Purely for two main reasons. I’ve never attempted a wheelie (why would you want the tyre that provides 95% of stopping power in the air), nor have I been that rider (Casey Stoner) who was supreme at backing a bike into a corner. So, even at 50 something, I’m now more interested in taking one of these to a small track to learn these basics that I never did even when racing dirt bikes as a kid. 👍👍
The thing that always bothers me about these 'stunts with electronics' is that you need just once where the electronics fail, and you're in a world of hurt. And they do fail just like TC sometimes fails. If you want to learn stunting, you gotta learn from scratch and put in the work, with a bike that if you drop, wont ruin your wallet and month. You get a dirt bike, or a grom sized bike. Its how I learnt and it teaches you so much. With these electronics you'll learn nothing (other than bad habits), and the skills are not transferable.
As always a very honest, objective and eloquent description that covers just the correct info that we need to want this motorbike. King regards from Catalonia!
A 13k EUR bike for young people... sure. Even the Kawasaki KLX 300SM is bought by older people nowadays. :D Anyway, MCN is the only review so far which dives into the negatives and really compares it to the competition. Thanks!
Great review! I've taken one of the first deliveries of the RVE here in the US. I'm not through the break-in period yet. But so far I believe Ducati got everything right, except the price. But they're not far off. Maybe $500 on the base and $750 on the RVE.
Nice review. It would be nice if this prompts KTM to re-release 690 Duke R as it fits that niche between a supermotard and a road bike which the Ducati seems to be aiming for.
I'm in the market for a mono ADV bike. I was thinking about the KTM 690 Enduro R. At this point this would be a super cool transformation into an Enduro/ADV bike or maybe next year they will launch one themselves
For me the high revving engine is a downside to be honest. For supermoto gearing it's not really a problem, but engines like the Panigale/Streetfighter V4 are only getting you in trouble when on riding the streets. Revving straight up to licence unfriendly territory in first gear. 💀
An amazing machine but for just a few more BHP over the KTM 690 is very complex. I have a 690 and 701 and love the low down grunt. I don’t need 3 1/2 more horsepower at the top end.
Could have had 95bhp out of my '94 ATK,if i had thrown the Porter Bros a big wedge,a lot less than than one of these...and 30yrs between the two...good effort though!
What is the maximum speed? What is the acceleration up to 100 km/hour? How does it feel riding 120 km/hour for an hour? I cannot find answers to these questions anywhere. I want this machine to be my everyday vehicle and these questions are essential for me.
Great explanation of a fantastic motorcycle ❤ Ducati are the leaders in electronics, brought the supo moto class to another level. Great job 😊 will I buy one? Let’s test ride one first before I decide if I’ll ever sell buy amazing 701?….
The IMU to help prevent you from high-siding when you're trying to back it in seems like a plus. $13k is a lot for a city bike but Ducati is not trying to sell this to people that are price-sensitive.
The 698 is about $10,000 more expensive than a yearly run out KTM 690 SMCR here in Aus. The glaring question for me is: Is it actually $10,000 better? Especially given if you want the wheelie assist from Ducati you have to add in the Termi Exhaust which is an almost $5,000 AUD option. That's a $30,000 bike. I'm just not seeing the value.
As an owner of a 701, I don't agree with your characterization of the engine having low end punch. It is definitely a peak power experience and like being revved.
12k , 12 bloody k!! I picked up a 2022 pre reg on a 23 plate SMC-R for 8.1k last year. I know this has got the tech goodies, but I'm not going to be jumping at the chance to ride one of these. Be interesting to see what the sales are like here in the UK.
@jcjrcottrell I'm stopping by AMS Ducati Dallas at lunchtime today. Will take with the manager and find out. Will post it up in a few hours. 👍 Edit; The 698 base version is $13k here in Dallas Texas. AMS has received three units, they had deposits on all of them.

U can count how much money you loose on Ducati vs KTM when your KTM is gonna be nicked. SMR can be stolen just by connecting two cables from ignition and pushing the start button. Ducati should have electronic theft control so they cannot just plug and play. I have complained this KTM feature ages allrdy and maybe this is the get their attention. Would’ve been nice if they actually undercut the 690/701 for price. Little wild that a new ‘24 bike doesn’t come standard with a QS at 13k
