Gary, It’s a bit late now but the wedge style tool post is more ridged, I replaced my piston type with the wedge type and like them a lot better! I don’t use a locating pin on either of my lathes tool posts. I like being able to rotate the tool post to what ever angle I need.

I’m now a new subscriber 👍 I’d rather be over kill than under and have the tool post fly across the room lol I agree I have a Chester conquest mini lathe and I’ve never had any problems with it it’s been engineered well unlike most Chinese mini lathes which are a mismatch of parts my one was perfect out the box I checked everything and all was great I’ve done my preferred modifications to it aka tool post to wedge type upgraded the spindle bearings the plastic gears to metal gears I also have a Chester mini mill Chester are honest well made tools I’d recommend them to anyone starting out all the best stay safe and healthy thanks for sharing

Very cool fix. would you recommend a 3 in 1 machine? I’ve never actually seen one and I’ve been thinking about getting a lathe for the workshop for a long time (an old one), but I don’t have a mill either... I’ll get some ct90 too, I’ve just been using engine oil for drilling/tapping so far. And I didn’t know about three fluted drills either, I’m always getting my bits caught in that last 0.5 mm of hole, cheers learnt loads

Julian, if you are short of space and don't need to do anything too big a 3 in 1 is great. If you want to do bigger more precise work I would suggest a separate Lathe and mill. I had a huge old lathe in my last shop which could twist 1" solid bar cold! But I had to get rid when I lost that shop. I always wanted a mill too but for the amount I do it's not worth it. (plus don't have room here!) You will find a huge difference in cutting with a proper cutting medium rather than old oil, makes the tools last longer too. Yes, three fluted drills avoid that last little bit getting caught!
