Love them or hate them. The Ottomans survived 600 years of constant wars and coalitions against them. It's a huge feat to say the least
The ottomans still would have been standing today if they hadn't made dumb mistakes like handing too much power to the harem, which led to murads poisoning, stagnating the empire, and joining the central powers in ww1

Relations between them actually improved during the reign of Selim III. (1789-1807). The Ottoman Embassy in Vienna was opened in 1794 and the relations also got significantly better after the Congress of Vienna with Metternich even warning Sultan Mahmud II. about an impending revolt in Greece before the Greek Independence War (1821-1832).
The relations soured only temporarily after the Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecid I. gave refuge to some revolutionaries of 1848 and refused to hand them over to Austria and Russia. But still the Austrians kept up steady relations with the Ottomans and always showed an interest in preserving their Empire.

Turks indeed had a decisive role in triggering historical major events like the Migration Period, Crusades, shaping the history of Balkans, Islamization of Northern India, Age of Discovery as well as ending the Middle Ages with the conquest of Constantinople, fall of the Roman Empire.
it shall be like that for the new centuries as well
As a Turkish person, I can say that, thanks for your reaction to Ottoman history, Drew Durnil!
I love that he said eastern rome instead of Byzantium
Because thats what it was called, Byzantium was a name created by the Holy Roman Empire to discredit Easter Rome's claim to being the heir of Rome
@@aggeloszaxaroulis3334 true
@@aggeloszaxaroulis3334 It was used by western scholars that were just entering the Renaissance (i.e to "rediscover the ideals of antiquity") in order to discredit the state that has kept the ideals of the ancient Roman empire for centuries, or in other words, westerners wouldn't want to appear like they were rediscovering something that was never lost in the first place.
It was even more prevalent when the Balkans were under the Ottomans, because westerners could not afford to appear inferior to a state under yoke.
But aren't we well west of Rome so it's Byzantium
@@thebandit0256 Nope, it was never Byzantium to *them* or to their neighbors. They were the Eastern roman empire and the citizens of the state were called Romans, of course the majority was of Greek descent there, but they were Romans and they were proud of it. Hell, when the Bulgarian Tsars took over large parts of the empire (over different times, multiple times, you know the drill of the Medieval era) they called themselves "Tsar of Bulgars and Romans" we have that written down.
Byzantium is a western term that me and the person above me explained.

The video completely misrepresents the Ottoman-Portuguese fight in the Indian Ocean. The Ottomans were always beaten back and only had temporary conquests of some cities which Portugal had left nearly undefended, in this case Muscat was conquered in 1552 but they left immediately as they knew they couldn't hold a portuguese counter attack. Militarily they were soundly defeated in the Indian Ocean theatre and they couldn't expand there (with Portugal helping Ethiopia hold and Safavid Persia been granted a breathing room as the Ottomans were never able to outflank and disrupt their trade as Portugal controlled the Persian Gulf).
As a Turk, I can say that this information is completely true. In fact, there are a lot of incorrect or incomplete statements like this in the video.
As a Turk, I find the analysis correct. For this reason, the Ottoman Empire could not participate in geographical explorations. Because it did not have ships and personnel to cross the rough seas. Successes at sea are limited to the island states in the region and the coasts of Italy and the Peloponnese, rather than international waters. As there was not enough naval power, they lost completely on the Mediterranean fronts.
This Video Suprised Me
