Kawasaki Ninja 400 Test Ride | Still the best beginner sports bike?

  • The Kawasaki Ninja 300 was the the most popular beginner sports bike for a couple of years. Then the Yamaha R3 and KTM RC390 came along and shook things up. Kawasaki has answered the call with a brand new Ninja 400. So what's it like? Is Kawasaki back at the top of the entry level sports bike tree? I think they are....
    Thanks to Sydney City Motorcycles Lane Cove for supplying the bike!

    *giggles* "it's definitely a perky little engine." That was so cute! 😂😂😂
    I'm planning on buying the 400 as my first bike. It fits me well and I like that it's a good beginner bike and to use for years to come :)

      Get zzr1400 would be much better for the new rider. It's a little better on the highway and more comfy.

    Thanks for the videos mate. They’re very informative. I’m a 59yr old from Newcastle, riding an old XT600E, which I’ve done over 70,000 ks on in nearly 3yrs. I enjoy checking out your test rides on different bikes. Keep up the good work bro, and stay safe on those Sydney roads.

    I think Kawasaki does an excellent job in balancing there bikes. I own a ZX-14 and it feels really well balanced. It’s a big bike but it’s really easy to ride. And in this video you said “the back of your foot fits the exhaust when you ride on the balls of your feet” mine does the same thing on my bike when I’m on the balls of my feet. I am touching the exhaust pipes

      You could, "could" ride an r6 like a 300 rides if you stay under 5k rpms, It's always the rider that is the variable. Only difference between a ninja 300 and an r6 is that a 300 limits you mechanically to 115 mph, An r6 tempts you with that 15k rpm limit and that 160 mph tease and ungodly acceleration.

    great video. I guess it attracts a lot of beginners. What I would like to know as a beginner intro into safety gear, how to pick what to prefer, what is important what is not.... etc. It's extremely important to stay safe but there are so many options - it's so easy to get lost. I would appreciate intro into world of equipment. And thanks for your videos.

    i was considering getting the 300,raising the final drive a bit and putting a turbocharger on.
    as a full-time mechanic, i'd raise the final to keep the rpm's on long enough in each gear for the turbo to spool in.
    but with the 400, i feel that all it'd really need is maybe a bit higher final drive. idk, im not liking that under-driven 6th gear for fuel economy reasons.
    and im only 5'11 and 180lbs so im not exactly wanting any of that to move my weight lol
    the 300 doesnt have much power over 85mph and thats why i wanted the turbocharger.
    but the 400 just has it already, but i ride 2-up about 80% of the time so i might do a turbocharger on it anyway,maybe limit it to 4psi...the 400 is running pretty high compression....lol
    my current bike is a 232cc hemi single cyl, 4V,11.8:1 compression, 6.8psi of boost, forged EVERYTHING, titanium springs,rod,piston,wrist pin+clip,and valves...aluminum alloy camshaft....but it makes about 37hp, tops out at 85mph and makes 35lb-ft at 7200, but let me tell you the stock 400 will out-pull my bike in any situation,until that turbo kicks in,then my bike will just barely edge it until it hits top speed.
    and i could realistically up my bike to a 372cc very easily and run circles around the 400, but the price to make it upto that spec i could buy 2 400's and have one for me and my fiance and never need to do 2up...
    i really think i'll get the 400 and experiment with extra performance mods on it. might do a video series about it someday if anyones interested.
    and if anyones curious as to why i built a 232cc hemi, drag bike (based off a 150cc scooter) its becuase when i built it, i made 35$ an hour and worked 95 hours a week (about 3,900 a week take-home) as a machine operator and wanted something fun to drive to and from work. (about 3miles/5km)
    ive driven bikes for a few years, i started on a honda nighthawk 750 and honestly thought it was kinda slow. whats sad is, the 400 would bury that 750 at any speed,even up a hill. that 750 may have made 92hp and 48lb-ft of torque but with a 580lb DRY weight for mine....yeah fuck that. my skinny ass hated it. not very agile at all.
    i switched from that to a 125cc yamaha enduro from 1974, it was a 2stroke and went about 75mph. i raised it up to about 176cc and put a expansion chamber on and a titanium piston and after that it would school the nighthawk up until top speed, and it was the 4spd.
    then i wierdly transitioned into 50cc 2stroke mopeds and building them to 90cc, and 9-11:1 compression and re-selling them with 4x the power as stock and they flew like hotcakes.
    wtf why am i explaining my life. man i gotta quit drinking.
    jesus, all im trying to say is the 400 looks to be a fucking bonkers bike. love it, gotta pick up 2. one for me, and one to pull the engine,trans,computer and gas tank off and make a feckin dune buggy bro.

    This should be your second bike, your first bike should be a POS that wont give you a heart attack when you drop it. Every new rider I have known has dropped their bike at least once in the first 3 months. All of them though after a while learnt how to not drop a bike (or not do it as often). A few did buy expensive Ninja's and had the joy of spending a fortune replacing the bar ends and plastic bits. One of my recent motorcycle converts listened to me and purchased a cheap chinese bike with drop bars, he dropped it 3 times in 6 months learnt his lesson and now has a far more powerful Japanese bike.
    PS My friend sold the cheap chinese bike for what he got it for.

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  6 років тому

      I agree there's definitely an argument for getting a beater as your first bike. I bought a 2nd hand CBR500R for my first bike (probably a bit nicer than I should have gone) but I had it 18 months and never dropped it. You can also fit frame sliders and stuff relatively cheaply if you're worried about that sort of stuff...

    Great review. I just got a used Ninja 300 and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm not a beginner, but it's been 40 years since my last bike, so I didn't want to restart on a liter bike ;-). I'm curious for your thoughts on whether the 400 is enough of a leap forward to justify trading up. I'm also eyeing the 650, but that seems like a lot of power I just won't use or even worse, a lot of power I'd mistakenly misuse. TIA.

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  6 років тому

      hey Michael - great to hear you're getting back into riding!
      I'm not sure if the Ninja 400 is a big enough leap to justify the trade. The Ninja 400 is definitely a better bike, but it's going to cost to trade in etc so if I had a Ninja 300 already i'd happily stick with that. Personally I think the 650 bikes are excellent street bikes too - great torquey engines but still manageable - not overkill like the liter bikes. Maybe give a couple a go and see what you think? No harm in trying right? ;)

      Jorge Villalobos - Totally agree. I keep trying to talk myself into something bigger, but TBH, it does everything that I want it to do and costs me next to nothing in insurance. I'll be keeping it for a while, I think :-).

    • @Captainhairyass
      @Captainhairyass 6 років тому

      michael yeah, I never even talk about insurance. I pay like 48 bucks a month and I have pretty high coverages including a complete pay out of my original purchase price if I crash it. As the owner of many bikes I venture to say that this has been the best value and most fun because you can ride them so hard and they're so forgiving!

      similar to the Versys, not a lot of torque down low, but the extra cc' do help... they generally like revs these Kawasaki parallel twins - they are noticeably more powerful in the upper half of the rev range..

    sir i just want to ask a question i bought the kawasaki 400 here in the philippines and as part of break in period the mileage of may kawi is about 500kilometer then i start to run at 150kph is that ok to start sir as a engine BreAk in.?

  • @1down5ups
    @1down5ups 6 років тому

    Hey what's up sir! Let's say you're crushing in 6th gear and you're coming to a stop. Do you just pull the clutch lever in and shift down all the way to first or down shift one gear at a time by pulling in the clutch lever in then letting go then pulling in until you reach 1st gear?

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  6 років тому

      the first option is fine, you won't damage anything, but keep in mind the engine helps with braking, so you'll need to use more brake force. Letting the clutch out each time will help slow the bike down.

    • @1down5ups
      @1down5ups 6 років тому

      WeNeedASaga okay with the first option theres no need to rev match correct?

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  6 років тому +1

      correct - you only need to rev match if you're pulling the clutch out to engage the gear.
      also, the Ninja 400 has a slipper clutch so you don't *really* need to rev match ever - it helps but isn't mandatory.

    • @1down5ups
      @1down5ups 6 років тому +1

      WeNeedASaga perfect sir! I put 75km on my bike and I jusy picked it up yesterday! Shifting up id say I give myself 7/10 for smoothness. I'm still kinda new so I need more practice. And downshifting is a another ball game so I need to ride and practice that also!

    • @tdunster2011
      @tdunster2011 6 років тому +1

      In Australia the Duke 390 is $2500 more than an R3 and about $1000 more than the Ninja400. Of those three I'd say that the R3 will be the most fondly remembered - although not in the same way as an MC22 or NC35 which were effectively lower cc versions of the best supersports available at the time.

      devender sehrawat You must live in India where the KTM390 is made hence the lower price, but I would definitely get the ninja 400 as the KTM durability is questionable, that engine is just not going to last long if you ride it hard.

    • @devendersehrawat2947
      @devendersehrawat2947 6 років тому

      the price difference is huge, obviously ninja 400 is way way better than ktm duke 390 but in the price of a ninja 400 here you can buy 2 ktm duke 390s and still some money would be left. They could have priced it the same as they have priced it in other countries. No bookings yet for the 400 even though people were waiting for it :(

    I'm 6ft 2in tall and the bike felt small for me, when I hopped on one at expo. Kinda cramped legs, handle bars too close to the body and absolutely terrible seat. Sort of like sitting on the cardboard. Will need to give it a ride and compare to 300 and 250 and see...

    • @at0m113
      @at0m113 6 років тому

      The seat isn't that great -- though I think mine has softened over time though (or my butt has hardened, either way). Kawasaki has an extended reach seat though that adds an inch of height (mostly with additional foam). Mine's on back order so can't comment.

Your comment is a bit irrelevant tho. 250, 300 and 400 are all street bikes, not sport/supersport bikes and certain level of comfort is expected. You are probably getting fooled by looks.

      the CBR500R feels much heavier. I think the CBR500R has a fair bit more torque as well - it feels a bit more urgent in the low revs than the ninja. I think overall they would perform similarly, but yeah the CBR definitely feels the heavier and torquier of the two....

      I think the main difference is the (lack of) weight with the Ninja 400. The Ninja 400 is a full 40kg/88lbs lighter than a Ninja 650. That's a lot! Especially if you're shorter...

      WeNeedASaga yeah I guess so. I personally ride a sfv650 gladius which is about 8kg lighter than a ninja 650, and at 5foot 8 I don't have any problems. I guess I can see the appeal of a lightweight low powered bike for commuting, it's just the fact that this bike is competing with their own ninja 250 and 300, that it doesn't make sense to me

      I dunno man. I bought a Ninja 400 a month or so ago as my first bike (having just taken classes and not having even ridden a bicycle in freakin' years) and I'm pretty damn comfortable on it -- it's very non-intimidating and makes you feel in control.
      Plus less CC's (250 class or less I'd guess) and you have to run it hot on the highways (like mentioned in the review). The 400 is at ~6500 RPM at 70 MPH, which while not snoozing along is acceptable. That was pretty much a requirement for me living in the land of long distances and 50 MPH+ anywhere not residential (Texas).
