MAKE YOUR OWN DIY TORO TIMEMASTER DRAG FLAP THAT LASTS. Toro definitely cut corners on this part of the Timemaster mower. The first drag flap lasted only 25 hours. The new one only lasted 4 hours. And I'm not spending another dime on a Toro brand drag flap. They just don't last. Watch and see how I make my own! LIKE and SUBSCRIBE!

The drag flap on 90's Craftsman mowers should be the design icon for all mowers. They work well and last forever.

    nice vid..
What I did...I had a old tractor trailer mud flap.
measured, cut it...sheet metal screws to the back of the mower.....its about 1---1.5 off the ground....keeps me debris free and stripes very well. cheap.
    forget 200 roller kits...
you can find old mud flap around loading docks when they get ripped off trucks backing up and hitting a curb.

JB, I had this happen Tony Honda HRX217 about a month ago. I went to my dealer and purchased a new flap and it came with a new rod and snap washer to hold it on. I installed the new flap only to fight trying to install the snap cap one one end. I finally went to my local Ace and purchased the same ready rod(threaded rod) and lock nuts you did. I cut it to length and it’s a lot stronger then what Honda gave me with kit. It was funny because we did the exact same thing. I enjoy watching your videos and it’s not the first time we have done similar things and used the same things. My adult son keeps telling me to start my own UA-cam channel. Keep up the great videos JB!

But of course I never listened lol. Then about a year ago I decided to give it a shot. Made about 60 videos so far. I lucked into a different solution with my 22" Toro Recycler. I had bought the new trailing flap already and saw that the attaching edge could accept a long rod of some sort. I was looking for something like that in my garage and noticed I had a Harbor Freight super long phillips screwdriver I had. I sprayed silicone spray lubricant on everything, had the flap already in the mower with a wheel off, then shoved the screwdriver through and cut off the excess. Perfect! Those flaps without reinforcement love to pop out and immediately go under the lower to their "death"

I have 65 hours on mine and the drag flap has no torn spots so far. The only thing done to this mower was an adjustment to the cable to the blade engagement. An easy fix. The drag flap is pretty cheap so I will keep this idea in the back of my mind. Thanks

I've got 3 Timemasters that i use commercially. I've had great luck in leaving the screws out of the ends of the flap. That way when it bends, instead of tearing, it just pops out. Turn on its side and pop it back in, good to go!

Sharing with the community: I am trying the cheap way first. I’m optimistic it should help. I just got a brand new timemaster. I took the flap off, washed it in the sink with dish soap and last it dry. And applied black flex tape (the rubberized tape you see on tv over the top of it). I measured, cut to length then peeled backing and laid it flat on table sticky side up and put the top of the flap in the center and rubbed it in well on both sides. It feels much more solid. The tape was 4” wide by 5’ at Home Depot.

    Nice work!
I reckon the drag flap gets cut on the sharp edge of the transmission retaining bracket.
That sort of gold thing you can see under there.
This seems quite a way up underneath but if you drop a wheel down a deep border edge or have very clumpy grass you are riding over, the drag flap will hit it with full mower weight on it!
    Design oversight / design fault.
If you are super gentle, never drop a wheel, don't have clumps and bumps etc, it will last and last - as some report.
Mine has a wear mark where it's been hitting. A few more times and once cut through, backing up and forward of the mower starts to tear it. Torn enough and the blades get at it and it's trashed, like yours and others!
My solution is to glue a strip of tough PVC pipe (slit down the length) along that sharp edge.
I rounded the edge a bit too, with a file.
Now the flap will hit the PVC and be cushioned rather than cut. I used Urethane expanding glue - sticks anything to anything.
I've also glued a strengthening /rubbing strip on that area of the drag flap.
    Time will tell.

Let me know how this holds up for you! Sounds like a really good plan of attack! The fact that we have to go these lengths for a single part is still mind boggling to me. It could easily be better made. Thanks for watching another Steve!

Flint Layfield I like the echo battery powered equipment in particular. Issue for me is that I have 10,000 square feet of property and I would be burning through batteries like crazy. Their technology has come a long way. If you own a 5,000 square foot property or less I think they are awesome. Big money saver over time. I do think the battery operated leaf blowers are terrible tho. No power what so ever. If you have a lot of leafs like me, forget about it. You’ll be there forever. Super weak. Battery operated trimmers work great.

I have to replace mine. My local toro dealer sells scag as well and I’m wondering if the trailing shield for an FC30 could made to fit the timemaster. Then I started thinking, I bet the commercial turfmaster trailing shield would fit with no modification. It’s a different part number and a bit more expensive which makes me think it might be more durable or made all of rubber. I’ll see if I can find out for sure. Commercial toro is sold by a different dealer I have no experience with here. Otherwise a piece of stall mat and threaded rod from tractor supply is the direction I’m headed.

@@GarageGear that’s what I’m hoping for! I had a feeling 3/8” all thread would fit after seeing your video, 7/16” might even fit honestly but 3/8” is plenty thick enough. I don’t think the conveyor material will ever wear out. It’s rubber over woven nylon, about 1/8” thick. Being folded over with machine screws and lock nuts holding it together, it should be ok. Provided the head of a screw doesn’t pull through but I don’t see that happening, at least anytime soon it’ll certainly last longer than the stock one which has about 4 mows of my 1.3 acre yard under its belt.

@@GarageGear It's really weird. My Original black matte toro super recycler not the cheap versions they have now came with a cheap plastic grass flap which did the same thing as your time master and I called toro to complain that as much money as I spent on this mower I was upset on how cheap they made that flap including telling them I've never had a mower flap wear out so quickly. They sent me a new replacement flap and this one is actually thick rubber 😳 This goes to show they do have those flaps in rubber and again I can prove it. I contacted toro again because I have a timemaster 30 inch in layaway which will be out next month, but told them that I'm purchasing this mower and I believe is safety which it's ridiculous that they're putting cheap plastic flaps on an expensive powerful mower like the timemaster. The supervisor apologized and is sending me a rubber flap for that model. This goes to show they do make and have the better flaps. I suggest everyone that owns this model make the same argument because one thing toro cannot do is fail safety standards which this falls under a safety issue.

    What’s a drag flap do ?

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  3 роки тому +1

It prevents anything from flying out the back of the mower. It also helps stripe the lawn to a small degree. Thanks for checking out my channel Sol!

Yeah who knows anymore. Minus the gas tank being too small the rest of the mower seems to be pretty good. Thanks for watching!

I’ve owned and run this mower for 11 years. The concept is fantastic. It does save time. The quality is not what I expected from toro. Leaking oil, burning oil, spindle issues, motor Mount issues, pulley issues. I ended up swapping the motor for a kohler, rebuilt spindles and pulleys, belts so we will see. Oh and this flap. Gotta fix this terrible flap
