  • Get rid of dog hair! Removing dog hair is a constant battle in my house since we adopted Pollux, but I've found a few things that get the dog hair off of your couch, get dog hair off your bed, and get dog hair off of your clothes. Since Pollux is shedding his undercoat like crazy, I've found something that will even help remove the dog hair from him!

Hi! I'm new to your channel and love your videos! First I want to say thank you so much for adopting Pollux. He is so handsome and sweet! I have a rescue dog that was a foster fail. She and my husband became so bonded after a week she became part of the family. We are her 4th owner. That was 7 years ago lol Chloe sheds a lot and she has short hair. I'm always cleaning up hair but it just comes with the territory of having a pet :) Pollux is shedding his undercoat from the winter. I do use Salmon caplets from the vet to help with the fur and skin, seems to help a little but not completely. Plus I can't use it all the time because Chloe is allergic to certain proteins (on hypoallergenic diet) but okay to use once in awhile. I will get that Chom Chom roller though, seems like it works really well. Oh and I have curly hair (thick and fine curls) just like you but have never found a hairdresser to cut it correctly. Once this lock down stops I will search for one that has experience with curly hair. Anyway I'm so glad I found your channel and look forward to the next video :) PS we are the same age and your 40s video was spot on!

Hi I just found your channel, really enjoyed watching Pollux settle in to his new home. He really found a good one! So, I have a massive long haired white German Shepherd, so I feel your pain, I really do. The shedding is a lot of work!! My tips are, dont wear black, dont have dark furniture, nothing dark!! 😄 black and grey is my favourite shades to wear too but it's a sacrifice I had to make. I take my dogs beds to my local laundromat. My washing machine and dryer was always getting clogged and my clothes always came out hairy. I just hand wash them now, due to the virus now I cant just nip to the laundromat once a week anymore so I use my tub to hand wash my dogs blankets and I just hoover their beds unless they are really dirty for some reason. Just put detergent and fabric conditioner in the bath and scrub scrub scrub, then wring it out and hang it up outside.
Also, I have a little tip for what you can do with all of his hair after you've gave him a good brush, get a little bird bath for your garden and leave the hair near the bird bath and the birds will take the hair for their nests 😊 they love dog hair, nice and cosy material for them. I can create a whole new dog everytime I brush my Shepherd it's insane. Haha! Thank you for doing this video I'm not sure if those products are available in my country (Scotland) but I'll have a look. I just hoover everything and it's a hassle taking the hoover out all the time so that little hair collecting devise for the couch would be great!!
      Take care. Thanks again.

I saw the headline, "I ADOPTED THE DOG NOBODY WANTED" and had to see. To hear he'd spent 491 days, since a baby, thankfully your Humane Society is a no kill place.
I lost my Lab/mix that looked like a full bred Lab May 2, 2018. She had a spleen tumor & low heart rate. I had trained her when she was four to be an assistance dog helping me p/u canes, keys, envelopes. She was only 8. I am considering adoption as my heart finally broke in October with an aortic tear. I am facing double hip surgery.
My heart says yes but my head: ARE YOU CRAZY?!?
    Your car needs repairs..
You know by now that God knew you'd be the best stewards of Pollux, another of His creatures that loves unconditionally.
I looked at him with his long snout, I first thought Collie as they have quite a lengthy nose and English Fox Hound cross.
    With a splash of Greyhound.
I don't know if Pollux was having diarrhea but one tablet of Pepto can stop vomiting as well. Of course check with your vet.
    Hugs to Pollux & Maxxie.
PS. Amazon carries vegan dog treats. I can't recall the brand, but open a blueberry & pumpkin, the fragrance of fresh blueberries wafts up. Gracie Ella Mae loved them!
I guess I forgot about dog hair tips. I had a Border Collie and a Chow/Lab mix whom I brought with me to house/dog sit. A sheet topped "my" bed as I was supposed to allow PJ on the bed. I'd take the sheet, put it in the dryer on air which the majority of hair gone. I'd do that with Gershwin & Girlie's things. One other dog liked me to vacuum him! I finally took Gershwin & Girlie to the groomer & both got a summer shave down. They loved it & I was SO happy as life was hairless as by the certain seasons came in, their coats were just coats!

I have four dogs, three are shedders. I have in my arsenal: lint rollers, couch cover, one Shark vacuum for wood floor and one Shark vacuum for carpet (Sharks are great BTW), vitamins for skin/coat and clippers. I'm getting the Chom Chom. I like to wash my dogs to get the hair collected in the bathtub where I can just throw away in trash, while I am washing I am gently pulling their hair out, then take them to deck where I blow dry them and that combined w/ brushing gets even more hair. I bathe 2x month using horse argan oil shampoo (they smell sooo good). I vacuum my wood floors everyday and my carpet once a week. I do have a special blanket that covers part of my bed that is their space, they are trained to sleep on their space it works most of the time but still have to roll my bed. We have a WaveForce LG washer/dryer (had them for about 10 yrs.) that seems to handle dog hair well.

Some shed out their coats twice a year heavily. Spring and fall. They have all kinds of things for it but a good long daily brushing with a rake or brush designed for it will get a lot off until it's over. Afterwards just a regular daily brushing will help a lot with the house hair. Used dryer sheets work great for my short haired dog on the couch, if not a lot of hair there. Wash dog items with ONLY dog items. There are balls that go in the dryer to trap & hold hair. Clean & reuse the next time. I wipe down the washer with a baby wipe after a load of dog bedding. I'm sure you shake or beat their bedding outside before washing. It will clog drains and air vents otherwise.

I have two rough ("Lassie") collies and here is what I've learned about dealing with dog hair. The gloves they sell for washing dishes, the ones that are usually yellow or pink, work great as long as they're damp. If they're not damp, they just don't work. I buy dog hair colored clothes as much as possible, and have a couch that's a similar color to their shed hair so it doesn't show as much in between cleanings. I buy tape rollers by the pack. A good quality vacuum is a big plus, but flooring is much better than carpeting. I also have a spinning wheel to turn the brushed out hair into yarn. And try not to think of it as hair--it's doggy glitter! Dogs are so worth it, and it's wonderful that Pollux has a home where he is loved.

I'm glad you haven't banned Pollux from laying on the furniture! Shedding is just something you have to learn to tolerate. As time goes on you learn which fabrics are dog hair magnets (fleeces and wools) and which are pretty resistant. I ended up getting a leather sofa which is so much easier to clean. I have a German Shepherd so the shedding can get pretty crazy, especially during spring and autumn. But it's a small price to pay for all the joy our fur babies bring! Oh and a little tip on the rubber gloves, they're much more effective when the strokes are in one direction on fabric. Rubbing backwards and forwards doesn't work so well.
BTW, I discovered your channel because of your first video about Pollux. I can see he's come out of his shell and looks so much happier and settled, but would be nice to hear from you how he's changed over the months.

@@WELCOMETOMYCURLS I feel exactly the same way! When I bring a dog into my home, it's their home too. There's no banishment from certain rooms or laying on furniture. I know the shedding is a frustration but I'm impressed at how well you have brought that dog into home life. Considering he is young, has lived in a shelter all his life up to four months ago, and is a mix of energetic breeds (collie, terrier(?), whippet(?)), Pollux is so chilled out and comfortable. He clearly feels loved, accepted, and at home, which is a real tribute to you and your family (and to Maxi). Also, rollering that dog hair off of your bed and sofa is going to keep your arms sculpted, so workout goals lol. Sorry I don't have any cute tips on cleaning dog hair off. I just watch for your dogs and the lovely relationship you have with them.

I have a pet hair problem too. And like you, I have tried EVERYTHING!!! What I discovered that helps me to remove it off my furniture- is that I either have a water spray bottle to mist my bare hand or I dampen a cloth and wipe in the hair in one direction- for me , this works perfectly. The gloves you demonstrated may work very well if dampened. Plus I cover my furniture with drop clothes or sheets. I have to. Then pull them off when I am expecting company or to laundry. It’s an on going battle that’s just part of having pets. We consider pet hair a condiment in this house. I do all that I can and the very best that I can - and thus far it hasn’t stopped friends from coming by. They don’t seem to mind.

He has the markings and the mannerisms of a Jack Russell I had and she shed all the time, heavier in the spring and summer. Mixed with border collie and you are always going to have a hair problem. When I put my clothes in the dryer with a bounce sheet, it did remove most of the hair. What it didn't you'll have to use the tape roller, or wrap tape around your hand. Or depending on the material, you could dampen your hands and rub over your clothes to remove hair also, but then your hands will be hairy. You'll want to clean the washing machine trap frequently and the dryer vent screen at each load.

An addendum to my comment below, during Spring take Pollux outside once a day for a 20-min. session and brush him with a brush that has longer & finer bristles, making sure to brush under his chin, belly & tail as well as his top coat. After you do this, take the damp towel and run it all over this coat. Have a pail of water nearby to rinse it and repeat a couple of times. I used to have two cats while living in an apartment and learned to manage cat hair all over couches, bedding, rugs. I've heard of people who have golden labs use the Dyson for pets to vacuum the hair from their dogs, other than these suggestions, everything else you are doing is great. Love you guys for giving Pollux a loving home, your lives will be richer for it.

Zoom groom works well to get out loose hair. You are right about the Furminator. It can scratch their skin, even leaving bloody scratches. Best way to brush a dog is to work in lines, start at the bottom of the leg, brush down, them move up a couple inches and brush that section down. Keep working up and towards their head.

Our household has a different shedding problem, a very furry short-haired cat and me. I shed terribly with my very long hair, which ends up everywhere!
We've found the best way to get the carpets cleaner is to use a squeegee on them first, and then use the vacuum.
We got one that can be mounted on a replacement handle for tools like rakes or even brooms. You have to be careful not to apply too much pressure when going over the carpets or it won't be as effective. The squeegee will work in the kitchen too.
Thanks for the ChumChum tip. Our couches are textured and rounded on the backs & arms so the squeegee trick doesn't work so well on them.
We had a hand - held power vacuum attachment for the stairs and upholstery that worked pretty well, but the darn thing broke when it crash landed a few years back.
Cat fur wriggles it's way into every piece of clothing we own, even if the cat has never touched the item. I'm going to try the dryer trick. I have seen that lint/hair trap thing advertised on Facebook & Instagram before, but I haven't seen it in awhile. I'm glad to know there's something on Amazon now.
Good luck with the battle on shedding. Unfortunately it's a war that will never be fully won, but it can be managed. Next Spring get an early start with that Furminator and just regular brushing on Pollux. The birds will love you for it. My husband's friends owned German Shepherds. When they would brush them and let the fur blow to the side of the lawn. It was of the birds were lined up waiting for their turn to snatch some up.
I'm tickled to see both of your dogs so happy and playful. After watching your video and some videos of Huskies, I'm kind of tempted to get a dog, but my 15 y/o cat would hate me for the rest of her life.

Pup fur problems. It has been an ongoing challenge for me as I have spent the past 10 years rescuing and fostering dogs. People don't realize that an estimated 10,000 dogs and puppies are killed in US shelters every day. I am now down from ten dogs to five dogs. They are all seniors like me. I'm grateful also that you are devoted and love Pollux. So many dogs like Pollux are turned into animal facilities because of things like shedding. Or worse they are chained outside. I just read an article (I'm always searching for help) that if you put clothing and dog beds or dog bed covers in the dryer for a few minutes with something like a drying sheet or ball, it will remove most if not all of the hair. Then put each article into the washer. I'm so proud of my Whirlpool as it has lasted the last 15 years and at least 30 dogs and puppies. Also, I'm afraid with furniture, I keep them covered in animal print faux fur king size bed covers as it both mask hair and dirt until I can get to it. I tolerate dirt in my older age a lot better then I did when younger. I do use Bissell vacuum cleaners as they contribute greatly to shelters. Except their dog bath. Would work well on one dog but not 10. I love watching your show. You are relaxing to me. You keep me wonderful company as my husband died from a sudden heart attack almost 3 years ago, my kids are far away and my friends are dying. You are as loving toward your home almost as to your beautiful family and fur babies. Here is another woman that I like to watch because of her devotion and hard work. Her shows are as amazing as you are. ua-cam.com/video/gcShBujgsIQ/v-deo.html Thank you also for going gray. I started in my thirties and my hair is a beautiful silver now. Blessings and blessings!

This is Li commenting, not David!) First off Renee, thank you so much for adopting Pollux! God bless your lovely curls ;) Secondly, loved the rubber chicken episode, OMG! Laughing so hard! Thirdly of all, careful with the Furminator. It is actually a set of blades - number 8 blades, I think - and it cuts the undercoat. That's why it gets so much coat out every time. It can actually make the shedding worse, as the undercoat gets broken, more hair comes in to replace it...Furminator should only be used something like twice a year, if at all. Furminator makes another brand of brush, it's all thin bendy little spikes (like a pin rake tool) on a floppy brush bed, that does a better job and won't cut the undercoat. Won't hurt the dog, either. Even my cats love it! :)

Dog hair is a huge problem in our house too. I don’t get dog hair in the washing machine but I have seen a tip to put the dogs blanket in the dryer first to remove some of the hair and loosen it up some too & then wash the blanket. I found that we get the most hair on our socks that we pick up from our old 1940s house that is hardwood floors throughout, so I wash the socks completely in their own load. It’s a great thing you and your family have done to rescue your cute pup!!

I have found that feeding my dogs more protein helps with shedding. The better the quality of food I feed mine, the less they shed. I scramble eggs (I cook 10 at a time so I don't have to do it everyday and just keep them in plastic container in fridge} and give them a big scoop on their dog food every meal. Also, try a zoom groom, it's rubber nubs that feel good to the dog, mine would fall asleep if I would let them lay down, they love it! I brush them in sections, do their necks, then their backs, last their hind end and tail, short quick strokes makes a fast job of it. Different brushes for different coats, zoom groom would work wonders on Pollux. I have also found that the older you get, the less you can see dog hair...ha! Pollux is lucky you found him. Thanks for the videos :)

When you put clothes in dryer add a dryer sheet. Wipe out washer with a paper towel or microfiber cloth before next wash cycle. Don’t wash dark colors right after a dog blanket or bed wash, do sheets or light colors instead. It helps a lot.
