The "Bad Boys" Pistons last-second chance at repeat championships needs a deep rewind

  • You might remember the late-80s early-90s Pistons as the head-crunching bad boys who were rough with Larry Bird and Michael Jordan, and won two championships. But what gets lost in that rendition is the decade the Pistons spent clawing their way from the bottom of the league to the top. And even when they got up top, people put an asterisk on their first championship because they beat the Lakers while Magic was hurt.
    Their second championship was no guarantee, and they wouldn't have earned it, nor the respect of the league, without a scrappy reserve guard nicknamed "The Microwave". It's rewind time.

      So true I started watching when the pistons reign was over . I got into the 93 east finals bc of bulls v Knicks which got very interesting bc the press was all over jordan & his gambling. Anyway I heard announcers comparing the Knicks to the bad boy pistons. I asked my dad about them & he loved the pistons ( bc we were new Yorkers & he hated mj for knocking our Knicks out so he loved the pistons kind of a the enemy of my enemy is my friend lol) he named all the pistons & loved vinnie johnson & told me his nickname was " the microwave " bc he heated up quickly which is such a cool nickname.

      @@sakazakijin dont I know it ! I became like a basketball encyclopedia getting every stars book & magazine I could get my hands on about the nba. My older brother had this VHS tape of the greatest stars at that point. Video was released in 90 & highlighted the best moments of the players to music i.e. larry birds best moments to the song I think called " small town " or magic's to " control " by janet Jackson. I was blown out by birds incredible 10 steps ahead eyes in the back of his head passing & great shooting ending w/ bird stealing the pistons inbound pass to dj who layed it in. At that time I had no idea of the significance. I could only watch iconic 80s games on the sports classics network. Magics passing & ball handling as a 6'9 pg must have been revolutionary. So glad for yt now I can see so much. I'm glad larry legend seems to be getting his respect from the younger generation bc someone made a video " the case for larry bird as the #goat. He def should be part of that convo. Isiah was also probably the best modern little man to play the game. Interesting facts mj never beat the celtics. I guess it can be blamed on the celtics were older than the bulls & Larry's career was cut short bc of his back. Guys from the 90s to today play 17 years. Anyway the pistons knocked the celtics out for good in 88. Another interesting fact is Isiah Thomas & his pistons were the only team to Beat mj for years. In fact Isiah is the only one who can say he beat bird Jordan & magic in their primes.
      It must have been great to be a pistons fan & have that us against the world thing cause they were the " bad boys " I must live vicariously through that bc my Knicks got as close as u can get to a title in 94 going 7 w/ the rockets. The knicks easily could have won that series. Starks was my favorite player & it was excruciating as a kid to watch him shoot 2-18 in game 7. The worst part was starks was magnificent in game 6 a game that was not do or die. I wish we couid flip game 6 for game 7 but that's life. Still the 90s were a great time to watch. The pistons def had a really deep & great team. If I was a pistons fan in 87 & 88 I would have been crushed. 87 thomas threw that pass away bc of birds vision of the court & bball iq & dj deserves a lot of credit for cutting so fast to the basket & laying in a tough layup. In 88 that horrible call against laimbeer when the pistons were seconds away from winning their first title had to hurt. Also bc they lost Isiah heroics were lost. I heard he just went off scoring like crazy. They really should have a 3 peat. 2 titles is nice though. I do miss when the nba was more physical & guys on the court hated eachother. Rivalries like Knicks bulls were like wars same w/ knicks pacers. Such great times.

    I'm born and raised in the Motor City. My Dad took me to see Dave Bing and the Pistons at Cobo Hall where my Fandom began. This is an excellent, short and crisp, rewind of the wonderful dream coming true on the Pistons during the best years of young adult life. I had moved, thanks to great jobs, toting everywhere the logos of the SPARTANS of Michigan State and every professional sports team to each office I worked out of. Tigers are winners, Wings are winners, and embrace of the march of the Bad Boys was that of belief that we had assembled the NBA GOAT 🐐! I hate how people try to undermine Detroit's win in '89 (like in this video) because Scott was out and Magic got hurt IN-GAME.
    Detroit would've beaten that same fully healthy Lakers squad the previous season had it not been for that BS call on Laimbeer (of which, had not happened, one could convincingly argue that the Pistons would have 3-peated). Besides, injuries are part of the game. Were the Pistons not supposed to take advantage of a hobbled Lakers team?

    Ha ha, people thought the Blazers were "Pistons West"? Wow, I see no similarities whatsoever. Excellent team though for sure (great 3-year run of 59, 63, & 57 wins w/ two NBA Finals appearances).

    • @gluserty
      @gluserty 2 роки тому +1

      I do feel that if any team in that era could be called "Pistons West", that would be the Utah Jazz. Rugged defense (actually lead the league in fewest point against in 1988-89) and deliberate offense, but the problem with those Jazz teams was that once you got past Stockton, Malone, Mark Eaton, Thurl Bailey, and a fading Darrell Griffith, there wasn't any depth (what made the Pistons great was their depth, and when players such as Vinnie Johnson, Mark Aguirre, James Edwards, and Bill Laimbeer being to age out, the team declined, since they were never able to adequately replace those guys. In the end, only Joe Dumars was left, since Rodman was traded).
