I actually read about how celebrity bashing humor like you see in Family Guy or South Park psychologically resonates with young people (like me) who desire the same success but haven't reached it yet. It allows them to feel better about their current station in life. "Yeah Lady Gaga makes a lot of money being a musician, but at least I'm not as weird or crazy as she is!" It's why this type of populist humor is popular. No one wants to see jokes about how much better a celebrity is than us.

It is the same non-sequitur jokes over and over, and their "punch line" is constantly in the shock value of the subject. Funny that a writer as crap as he is, is trying to knock Jeff Lynne, it's like Lil' Wayne criticizing Paco de Lucia's guitar playing!
Listen, Randy Newman is an amazing composer, the music he made for movies he was being payed for no matter what he wrote as long as it was catchy, If you listen to some of his other pieces you will see how insightful and deep his lyrics are, I hate people who talk about things they know nothing about.
