For centuries, humans believed the deep sea was lifeless, but new technologies have revealed that this previously hidden realm is home to rich ecosystems, mineral treasures, and an astounding kaleidoscope of life. Oceanographer Dr. Vicki Ferrini, marine biologist Dr. Helen Scales, and explorer Victor Vescovo join Brian Greene for a journey to Earth’s final frontier where for the first time we are discovering what lies beneath the oceans.

Wonder why we haven't heard more about Vicki,Hellen and Victor's research and findings in main stream news?? These people and their research are crucial. Victor needs more funding to get his research teams a couple more ultra deep dive subs...and for research. This is as important as the space race. Hope they have more of their research on, very interesting.

Just wow. We are living in times where this kind of knowledge and first hand exploration and research is able to be looked into. The deep is really the place where we can make some understanding of how alien life would look like. Amazing Stuff.
Climbing mountains is an expensive sport. I don't think astronauts get paid heaps and heaps of money and yet this guy has $50,000,000 initially to build his submersible to nicely share with the world. Incredible.

I hope to see a panel more about sustainability, the future of our planet, green energy and other earth science? I wanna hear about how scientists make crazy breakthroughs in technology and science but these break throughs are not wide spread and common practice or implemented in business models and practices, ex, concrete made from plastic.
When i was a kid, the local bio-plastic plant was made from corn oil to degrade in two years. The major client was McDonalds restaurants for food packaging.
I guess the question is - "Will humans destroy the ocean before we find anything useful." And it's probably a good thing we haven't explored it much. It may be the only place we have left to survive once the surface is unhabitable. There may be some lost ancient civilizations at the bottom of the ocean that have done just that. Our technologies at this time can't properly map the ocean floor anyway.

When we see how the sulpher from Io is volcanically in both Jupiter`s orbit and also onto Europa`s surface of redlines, we see Ganymede survives the red dousing.
Do we look to Ganymede moreso for life beyond severe dumping from Io?

That sonar that must be used, i would imagine it would have to be very powerful. I know sound travels much differently in water. Does this effect ocean animals like dolphins and whales? I would think it could cause quite the headache or even make them loose their sense of direction.
I have always been fascinated by what is down there, I hope we can do it without hurting anything.
does a flashlight affect the human eye? Of course, sonar affects animals using their own "sonar". The debatable and debated part: HOW bad does it affect them? Hard to know for a few reasons. limited funding for those studies, and the studies and experiments could harm those animals, too.

That's got to be one heck of a sonar blast. It's extremely disheartening the answer you have given.
There's a difference between the sonar this type of boat is using and the power that it needs to penetrate deep trenches compared to other submarines and boats using the technology.
I'm not one of those people that goes and glues myself to a painting in a museum and even I find this Reckless and dangerous

@@davidgabra1609 I have often wondered that as well. These creatures are immersed in absolute Darkness and to all of a sudden have a spotlight shined on them it must be the equivalent of stepping out of a hot tub into negative 30° weather
Yes, we have mounting evidence that military sonar is VERY harmful to undersea animals, specifically Whales and Dolphins. We are no longer in doubt about this... Basically, they freak out- and swim violently away from the sonar pulse, to the point of causing damage to the animals, or even causing the whales to beach themselves.

When you finished the GPS of th ocean and sea floor I want it badly to built submarine that can carry 300-500 people cars and other cargoes..so plus finished the GpS and I want the autonomous submarine to transport and carry thing and transporting humans from one continent to another so big up all the Dr. And prof. And scientist as a whole great job it will contribute a lot to my dream submarine thanks..
Not all people see a Chuckwagon vs. Russian Sub tech parallel, but the technology is a situational one.
Prairie schooners were multi-purpose tools, and the ability to travel under the sixty foot ice waves of the Arctic waters have led Russians to make sub technologies.
This may be why Russians at times understand space better as an extreme terrain.

the diameter of Earth - (minus) the depth of the 2 oceans in question.
since our oceans are max 11 km-ish deep (nothing compared to the diameter of our planet), the distance you wanna know is basically the diameter of Earth

The portion about the many things that have been intentionally and unintentionally dumped at sea was important to know. We humans only evolved recently. The concept of what it means to be human is only recently connected to evolution. It would be wonderful if we figure out how to be stewards of this planet. It would be wonderful if we could figure out how to live with each other. Sadly the invasion of Ukraine is taking place. The term ecocide is now in our vocabulary. It would be wonderful if the planet itself is resilient enough to survive our learning curve.
