    It's such a small piece of the overall spectacle, but Elidibus's line where he realizes he can barely remember why he's fighting anymore gets me everytime. "It is my duty to guide mankind and this very star upon their... true... course... This, I swore..! To... to someone..." It's so superbly delivered. Big, bombastic declarations are actually not so hard to voice act, but those smaller moments, dripping with subtext and meaning, THOSE are what make a performance powerful.

      The irony is that the promise he can't remember was to YOU, the warrior of light. His inspiration, the reason he became Elidibus. To be a savior, like his hero, the Warrior of Light. When the WoL Was still the seat of Azem, 14th of the convocation.

    In a single expansion of an MMO, they made us care about the NPCs in a different world, one which we haven't seen since the start of the game 8 (11 counting 1.0) years ago. Other games struggle to evoke such a connection even after years and years of trying to do so.

      @@gandalf8216 FFXIV's writers know the cardinal rule about villains that other writers get wrong all the time. Every Villain has to be the hero of their own story. It makes no sense when they are just evil for no reason, they have to have a goal. Even more importantly, they have to have a goal that the reader can understand and in some ways agree with.

    • @Gwydion_Wolf

      @@gandalf8216 depends on your moral compus.
      On one hand, his cause was just as valuable as ours, trying to save those he loved.
      On the otherhand, his "method" of doing it, the total abolishment of life to do so, tarnishes his crusade.
      Similar to the Grey Wolf. He well and truely believed in the Empires quest to eliminate the Eikon threat in order for the land to finally find peace. And even tried to avoid conflict if he could. But, as with Emet, his way of doing it (do as i say or be forced to), tarnished his goal.

    • @ericbright1742
      @ericbright1742 3 роки тому +10

      How to make a good conflict:
      You make the point of contention *personal*. With Emet Selch vs. WoD, they are fighting for their loved ones, their families, their friends. Everyone they hold dear. With Ran'jit vs. Thancred they are fighting for their daughter, Minfilia.
      Then you take that position, and you make the two parties positions so fundamentally incompatible, that conflict is inevitable. With Emet vs. WoD, saving one's loved ones will result in the destruction of the other's. With Ran'jit vs. Thancred, one wants to protect Minfilia, and keep her safe, while the other wants to let her live her life, even if that means her death.
      When you have these two things in a story, you end up with a powerful, meaningful conflict, and a powerful, meaningful story.

    I'd say what makes this particular stream so special is that there are not many out there who immediately recognize/note that the Warrior of Light/Elidibus is in the form of FF1 Amano Warrior of Light, and then proceed to get emotional about it, even when the man does the pose.
    Also - I share in the moment with Emet giving us one last wave. Just like you, I cried mid-fight and it does make the fight harder, like goddang it. You use a crystal that summons friends and he comes up to save you at the moment when you need a friend.

    • @gianni.sacciloto
      @gianni.sacciloto 3 роки тому +4

      It's even more emotional when you think about the context of that scene. Elidibus was turning into "THE" Warrior of Light. The original one. His inspiration. In other words, he was turning into his interpretation of "You" that still remained buried deep inside his fragmented memories. Iirc, he idolized Azem.

  • @roetheboat1
    @roetheboat1 3 роки тому +75

    I believe that the two soul crystals that Elidibus grabbed at the end were the ones for Lahabrea and Igeyorhm (we fought both of them at the same time at the end of Heavensward), and that they were also the two Ancients we see in the flashback Elidibus has where they were talking to him about their worries with his obsession with his duty.
    One of them says something along the lines of “Just look out the window! The rains have ceased and we’ve been blessed with another beautiful morning. Come outside with us.”
    So when Elidibus repeats that line as he is dying, he is lamenting the fact that he didn’t take up their offer when he had the opportunity and now he never can.

    • @TarossBlackburn

Now I just need to find the cutscene for it to re-experience it in-game! Still think Seto and Lyna are the biggest tearjerkers of 5.3, but I now understand why people always bring up that line!

      @roetheboat1 3 роки тому +6

      @paladinodlanier There are two possible explanations for his size (and in fact it might even be both).
      From what I've read, Elidibus was in his mid-to-late teens. Not a child, per se, but not an adult either.
      It might also be that so much of Elidibus' personality and soul had been eroded as the result of being Zodiark's Heart that all that was left of him in the end was the most pure or concentrated parts of his psyche. So we are seeing him as a child because that's all that was left of him in the end.

      I‘m thinking about playing the whole game again. Would you say it‘s worth playing it in Japanese the second time for the voice acting? I would only understand maybe about 10% of the spoken words, so I‘d have to rely mostly on the subtitles.

    • @NightofOrion
      @NightofOrion Рік тому +1

      @@MacTaipan If you don't speak Japanese, you won't get anything from the Japanese dialogue other than a nice performance. The subtitles are not accurate to what's being said in Japanese--they're a direct transcription of the English dialogue, like closed captions. You're not going to get the same experience as someone who understands Japanese. That said, the performances ARE excellent, so if you don't care about the discrepancy, go for it! I speak Korean so I understand enough spoken Japanese that the discrepancy bothers me and I can't do it. My audio is in English.

    FFXIV it's a stellar game and a love letter to the franchise, being a FF Player increase by 500% your experience playing FFXIV so you can catch most/all References to other titles. The game by itself it's a masterpiece, i just feel sad cuz most of FF Players refuse to play this game for ignorance and prejudice, because it's an "MMO" and they have no idea dispite being a MMO this game it's a RPG first, a Final Fantasy first and just like any other FF game there's a Plot, Character Development, Cutscenes, Dialogues, everything that any Offline game does and more.

      its an outdated game. and if they dont start innovating with FF 16 the franchise will die. they are focusing on the wrong things (singleplayer, moderation...) and they live in the past. they don't innovate. Imagine a final fantasy game with good action combat, ability to tame open world monsters as your mounts, fun gamemodes from Arena, open world raid bosses people would fight over for.... even Capture the Flag or King of the hill. make it free to play. sell good skins. thats what Final fantasy genre needs. also good social system like voice chat or voice bubbles or like New World chat I guess... the game has some really good PvE elements, music, zones bosses, story.. but its not a complete game
      lack of social features like chat bubbles, smaller nameplates aka small text font size option (last time I checked there was only normal and big option=) and no vocie chat. you have an outdated combat and subscription model with convoluted login/register/buy game systems. u lack social and PvP updates. u lack innovation. u don't even wanna complete game. u don't combine PvE elements with PvP. like open world raid bosses where players and guilds would fight to contest them. they could drop epic mounts. or exp/gear tokens that could be 1 alternative to story progression. or the ability to tame open world monsters as your mount. but most good mounts are locked behind a paywall or insane grind. u don't have Frontline sound or graphic notification. the lack of PvP mounts/events/quests. u only care about PvE and story players.u focus on shemale model instead of updating your game lol. also no blue mage in PVP (most good MMORPG animations main character is classless class. from Kirito to the main character in the Kings avatar animation.
      u don't have a single good 4v4 map like Heavens Arena from the King's avatar. FFXIV community could learn a lot from the Kings Avatar animation from Tencent. your combat too. 20 years behind. no skillshots or dodges, not even hybrid action combat like gw2, let alone true action combat like smite or Vindictus...2.5s global cooldown time with tab target combat in 2021... and they thought they are gonna solve the issues of combat by just adding crazy animations...but that cluttered the game and now they cannot even lower global cd time because of that. lack of social interaction. because u only have chat box that gets spammed whole day and emotes. emotes are nice but feel like u also need chat bubbles or voice chat. games 15 years ago successfully implemented chat bubbles. also new players cannot their content on ffxiv reddit, u have blocked comments on your FFXIV promotion videos so people cannot discuss it.... you take people that care for the game and complain as "toxic"...
      the game lack social and PVP updates? doesn't have chat bubbles (you only look at chat box whole day which sux), smaller nameplates aka text font size option, voice chat, good 4v4 Arena style map like Heavens Arena from the King's Avatar animation, no frontline popout sound notification, outdated combat and subscription model, convoluted login/register system (cant even use afna at launcher reset password confirm email box), no blue mage in PVP, lack of innovations such combining already good PvE elements with PVP such as open-world raid bosses where players and guild fight to contest said bosses? compete for the boss. they could drop epic mounts o exp/gear tokens which could be a great alternative to story leveling. new players cannot share their content on ffxiv reddit...
      doesn't change the fac the game has 500 ms animation lock + 2.5s global cd tab targeting combat. 20 years behind. they thought they will fix the combat by adding crazy animations, but that also just cluttered the game. mybe they could lower global cd to 2 second but anything lower hard because crazy animations. but the core problem si still there. tab targeting combat. not even hybrid action combat with skillshots and dodges. elt alone true action combat like Smite, Vindictus r the Kings Avatar animation. WoW TBC, for example, ahs bunch of instant casts too but only 1 second global cd. also wow tbc has chat bubbles and voice chat... ffxiv only has emotes and chat box. and it sux watching into chat bo whole day that get spammed. it is not socially interactive. or actually good 4v4 map like heavens Arena from the Kings Avatar or open-world raid bosses where players and guild could fight to contest them....or ability to tame open world monsters as your mount....innovate....more PVP events/rewards/mounts, combine PvE and PVP elements... and ffxiv community often mix competitive spirit and rivallry with toxicity

    So nice to see a streamer recognize the OG WoL. I just realized while watching this video that it makes sense: you're in 'the First,' and so you'll see 'the First' hero of this franchise. That kind of reference being intentional is not a stretch, as the 12 legions of Garlemald use references to previous games. The 7th legion was responsible for 'Project Meteor,' the 6th legion was the one that attacked Azys Lla which itself bears a huge resemblance to the floating continent in FFVI, including the Warring Triad (if you did that optional trial storyline), Zenos as the head of the 12th legion fought you after merging with a God-like entity much like how Vayne Solidor did, and the list goes on.
    ...which brings up something interesting. The one who became 'the heart' of Hydaelyn was named Venat, the same as a character in FFXII, including the same pronunciation (the T is silent.) If Zenos uses references to 12...now I'm REALLY wondering how Venat will play into Endwalker.

    A lot of streamers that I've watched so far that's gotten to that Seto scene has not failed to make me cry. From big names such as Rich even Savix (who is now an RP yeah) to you it bawls your eyes out. Even Rich telling his chat and tweeting how he "hated" it because the loss of his dog, (if I recall) hits you in so many ways. Looking at it when one of my oldest dog of many that's passed on a year ago this scene hits a lot.
    Fun little fact though: if you were a Lala the scene with the Exarch holding his staff you would be at the bottom half of it conversely so if you were playing other races.
    Also, the fact you recall the WoL is the same as of FF 1, if you see Hironobu Sakaguchi's adventure throughout Eorzea he is just about to finish Shadowbringers in record time. Him and Elidibus will be having a "Who wore it better" glam competition soon if you see his glam.
    Finally, DRG is best job haha.

    I was so sad I missed the second half of this stream, so I'm really thankful you uploaded this so quickly!
    Spoilery thoughts:
    - yeah I don't know how they expect us to do the second half of Seat of Sacrifice with tears in our eyes either, very rude tbh
    - I almost timed out in the Elidibus duty because I was gposing with Moenbryda for so long :(
    - The community had theories about the Fourteenth member of the Convocation after 5.0, and the story in 5.3 kind of sent us into a frenzy. Also, the fact that Emet-Selch made Azem's stone in secret out of regard for his longtime friend and companion... man
    - that Revenant's Toll cutscene was so unexpected and so joyous, it's the most amazing thing.
    - I'm really glad that you took a chance on playing an MMO. I played only single-player RPGs growing up and when WoW came out I had a lot of anxiety about playing with other real people. It's got to be even rougher doing it in front of so many people who care so much, but for fans of the series it's both a love letter to the past and an acknowledgement of how powerful fantasy stories can be.

    Thanks for sharing your 5.3 experience. It's such a great ending to the overall Shadowbringers story. The Warrior of Light fight also has my favorite FF14 Easter egg: the WoL shades during part 2 of the fight is the cast of FF4. You've got two lallafel who use Twincast Meteor (Palom and Porom), a Dark Knight wearing the Baron Helm (Cecil), a Bard who uses Holy (Rosa and her bow), a Summoner who's Bahamut has blue flame (Rydia), a Ninja with Water and Fire ninjitsu attacks (Edge) and the Warrior (Cid, who could use axes).

    There is a neat detail that I haven't seen anyone catch yet. Right before you fight elidibus the first time, the name on the text box changes from elidibus to ardbert.
    This implies that, if this scene was voice acted (which it feels like it was meant to), his voice would have changed back to ardberts.
    This is why WoL looks so visibly angry right before the fight, they know elidibus is mocking them.
