I hate that you European Christians come here with your weird religious traditions. The 1st amendment is literally separation from the church and state. No religious establishment should be "dominating" anything here people have the right to choose what they want to believe in but it shouldn't be forced onto us real Americans who have older traditions. No one wants to see an older kkk the Spanish inquisition. 💀

OMG, The history of wearing these clothes comes from the Spanish Inquisition, people who wanted to redeem their sins had to do penance, the church put a conical hat with a piece of cloth that fell back and front, in the front they wrote the sins that person had fallen, hence in Spain is typical of the phrase "to wear the san benito", because that's what those clothes were called: san benito. Currently it is used because the idea of cleansing sins through penance, and so that nobody knows the person and has a little austerity and closure. Everything that others say out of this, is invented.
It was used in Spain for the first time, by the sixteenth century and in the nineteenth century, by the nineteenth century, on the contrary, for the sake of personal culture. It turns out that we know more about their land than they do.

Hi Vic, Thank you so much for a nice description of the Holy Week in Malaga for people that don't know my country and this tradition. You are right, it's very touching, even more in person, all together, the "tronos" the music, the environment (and you didn't have the chance to listen when someone from the balconies sing a "saeta" special song dedicated to Jesus or Maria, that's breathtaking). For people here comparing this with kkk: this Holy Week event is a commemoration and respect to Jesus and Maria, specially to the events around Christ's death and Resurrection. This tradition has nothing to do with racism, it's way older than the existence of the kkk, and it is completely unrelated to it. Centuries later, kkk took this uniform, but this event doesn't represent anything related to them or to racism. Totally unrelated.

People also use it for carnival celebration in Southern France during the "Saint Grégoire".
In fact a famous UA-camr in France with 3.5 millions subs (joueur du grenier) used to edit touristic videos and as popularized the tradition to a part of his audience in a livestream.

Is called "Semana Santa"(Holy Week) The catholics commemorate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus
Takes place every year and begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Resurrection Sunday.
In Spain the "Cofradías" (brotherhoods) take to the streets the "Pasos" (floats) which are carried by the "costaleros" in procession.
Also in procession the "cofrades" who wear the penitencial clothes are the "Nazarenos".
This tradition originated in the 16th century.

Being a member of these orders, following all these religious rituals won't get you into the everlasting life. You must be born again. It's gonna be eternity with or without God.. this is what is at stake. I could say so much more about the Vatican, Jesuits, Rome, SMOM, Malta... but I suggest to get and read a Bible and pray. Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again in victory on the third day. This has nothing to do with an 8-pointed cross or any other cross. All this religious stuff is invented by men.
And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. Revelation 17:18 KJV
And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
      James 1:27 NKJV
It has nothing to do with religious cults, traditions of men. Big buildings, expensive clothes and ornaments, expensive parades and procession, all kind of statues etc. Jesus came very strong against the religious leaders.

In the past they were different brotherhoods but they decided to merge at the end of the 19th century.

First of all I'm sorry because I tried to make this comment as short as I could, and although my english is not very good I'll try to answer you with some context. (If anyone sees that I said something wrong, please correct me).
I've recentky read about this because I go every Semana Santa to the south of Spain (in which this tradition is stronger and I'm from the centre of Spain) and I've always been curious on why they dress like that.
The Spanish Inquisition was established at the end of the 1478 and one of the punishments was public humiliation while wearing a cloack and a "capirote" (the pointed hat), similar to what today "penitentes" wear in Semana Santa, although back then, they woudn't cover their faces.
This probably evolved to be a way of showing publicy your repentance. People ask to be there in Semana Santa and they cover their faces because is between them and God (since they're christians) and to have some privacy.
They accompany Jesus and Mary to "support them" while Jesus dies for their sins.
      Thanks Vic for the video!!!!

Read about Spanish Inquisition during the years 1500-1600 especially (altough Spanish Inquisition lasted in force until 1800s, when the culture and mentality changed cause the modern times).
Holy Week in Spanish culture dates back to the 16th century, even the 15th cause some processions started to celebrate around 1480 to 1499.
Inquisition was a religious rule that served, in adition of stablish Cristianism and Roman Catholicism as the Official State Religion, for making common people do penance for their sins during a whole year, and during the days of Easter, they decided march in processions for feeling purged of their errors as christians, their blasfemes, hangovers drinking in a tabern, sexual activities or petty crimes commited (for example, stealing any cheap thing, including food for being hungry).

@A C The phrase auto de fe (Act of Faith) refers to the ritual of public penance of condemned heretics and apostates that took place when the Spanish Inquisition or the Portuguese Inquisition had decided their punishment (that is, after the trial). The phrase also commonly occurs in English in its Portuguese form auto da fé.
While the torture, the trial, and the testimony of the Inquisition were conducted in complete secrecy, the auto de fé ceremony was generally held over several hours with great pomp in a principal church or central square, in the presence of the chief dignitaries and great crowds. Such an auto de fé was called Auto público general. At the Auto particular only the inquisitors were present. The 'auto-de-fe' involved: a Catholic Mass; prayer; a public procession of those found guilty; and a reading of their sentences (Peters 1988: 93-94). Other types of autos de fé were Auto singular, involving one individual, and the Autillo, which was held on the site of the Inquisition, in the presence of the Inquisitors and some special guests. The Inquisition imposed a variety of punishments, ranging from imprisonment, confiscation of property, and death.
Artistic representations of the auto de fe usually depict torture and the burning at the stake. However, torture was not administered after a trial concluded, and executions were always held after and separate from the auto de fe (Kamen 1997: 192-213). The burning of heretics did not strictly form part of the auto da fé, since the church did not desire to be formally associated with the shedding of blood. Those adjudged guilty were instead relaxed (i.e., handed over) to the secular authorities who were responsible for their execution at the place of burning (quemadero), sometimes outside the town.
The condemned persons were dressed in special garb, the sanbenito. A procession was formed which moved to the location of the auto de fé. A feature of the autos was the delivery of vituperative sermons by some eminent cleric; these were frequently published and 70 are extant that were delivered in Portugal alone between 1612 and 1749. In Portugal the programs of the autos with names of those who appeared in them (listas) were published in uniform quarto form: in Spain, less regularly, and mainly in octavo.
The first recorded auto de fe was held in Paris in 1242, under Louis IX (Stavans 2005:xxxiv). Autos de fe also took place in Mexico, Brazil and Peru: contemporary historians of the Conquistadors such as Bernal Díaz del Castillo have recorded them. They also occurred in the Portuguese colony of Goa, India, following the establishment of Inquisition there in 1562-1563.
The first Spanish auto de fe took place in Seville, Spain, in 1481; six of the men and women that participated in this first religious ritual were later executed. The latest auto In Spain was recorded in Valencia in 1826. The Inquisition enjoyed limited power in Portugal, having been established in 1536 and officially lasting until 1821, although its influence was much weakened with the government of the Marquis of Pombal, in the second half of the 18th century.
All told, some 2,000 autos took place in the Peninsula and its dependencies between these two dates. The total number of those who appeared runs into hundreds of thousands, many of whom were however charged with offenses carrying less stringent penalties, such as bigamy. Those who suffered the death penalty have been reckoned at upward of 30,000. These however, include not only Marranos and Crypto-Jews, but also Protestants, Crypto-Muslims, and others.

@A C The origin of the capirotes or capuchón is in the Holy Inquisition. People who were sentenced by the Court of the Inquisition were punished with the imposition of this cardboard cone. In addition, on the capirote they were put a cloth garment that covered their chest and back. This garment was called sambenito. The expression “to hang the sambenito on someone” comes from here, as it refers to a sentence. Since the end of the 15th century, many paintings have depicted these acts of the Inquisition in their works.
Same acts of terror. This goes beyond what they celebrate today. Besides that, Spain has a deep hand in genocide. Therefore, I guess your ignorance is bliss. The fact of the matter is the root of the tree is devilish, and so be the fruit. Easter is a pagan tradition. Fraternities are not holy and contradict the very scriptures that they claim to honor.

I am not an expert in this matter (concerning these outfits) and I am not Spanish, so I cannot offer an opinion or to even state where these outfits came from and if they are related to the KKK. These are the Nazarenos. They are catholic congregations what carry the different holy images during Easter, and their clothing comes from Medieval times. Originally, they were people who wanted to have their sins forgiven, so they carried the heavy holy statues around the city or followed said statues while whipping themselves as penitency. Everyone understood that those who participated were heavy sinners, so in order to spare themselves bad reputation even after Easter (the kind of reputation that can ruin your entire life) they covered their faces in the manner shown in the video. With time, the flogging part disappeared and nowadays, the people who take part in all this are just religious people from different catholic congregations. The dressing code stucked, though, and now you can find Nazarenos wearing their clothes in different colors depending on what congregation they are and what holy statue they carry

In a simplified version of what the genius above me just explained, the KKK were around in the early 1900's ( yes, as late as that ! ), but the Spanish Catholics have had this tradition for centuries, since medieval times, I have reason to believe that the Ku Klux Klan took heavy inspiration from these garments, because they are worn to hide the person's proper identity.
