Die Antwoord's US debut at Coachella: interview with Xeni (Boing Boing Video)

- Ninja and Yo-Landi of Die Antwoord sat down with Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing.net for an interview just after the South African "rap-rave" band's first-ever US performance at the Coachella music festival. The duo spoke about their explosive, internet-fueled burst to fame, and about the origins of their "car crash music" (it's disturbing, but you can't look away) by way of District 9 and an anarchic internet and music subculture in post-Apartheid South Africa.
We're told this was the only interview Die Antwoord granted during their US visit. The conversation originally streamed live as part of the Los Angeles Times / Brand X Magazine Coachella Oasis Webcast.

"we make car-crash music, like when there's a car crash, everyone looks."
lol yolandi.. never heard a better description of "die antwoord".. hahaha..
love you guys.
Yolandi is so adorable aw
@Fantomas646 Talking from experience?
@Fantomas646 I’m guessing you are as obese as everyone else seems to be nowadays. I lived in the 70s when everyone was slim before obesity and when fat people were laughed at.
I’m 65 and Die Antwoord has been my favorite for many years. I completely love their bizarre style I can’t get enough of it.
I'm 9 years late to the party but fuck me these guys are awesome. Saw them in the movie Chappie and now I can't stop listening to their music and watching their videos on the interweb. I don't even like rap. I love these guys. Go Ninja and Yo-Landi!
They both handled their landing in America like a boss
i feel like she split them up so yolandi could finally talk lol
😔
Oh come on, it wasn't that bad an interview. The reporter is friendly and asked good questions, and Ninja and Yo-Landi were both really polite and gave great answers.
Going from an average of 300 audience to an 5,000 start - woah!
PS: sounds funny when they say "interweb" instead of internet :P
She had to work hard in the middle! I liked this interview because of her asking both of them directly. I hate when a singer holds the mic the whole time and the rest of their band never talks. But sometimes the rest of the band are idiots. Yolandi's cool, so I'm glad she talked.
U hardly ever get Yo Landi piping up in a lot of the interviews, she's amazing!!!
I can't believe they can keep a straight face....they are absolutely brilliant.
It is quite refreshing to hear an interviewer ask good questions - and be aware during an interview and roll with it. Which is great for such a cool crew as Die Antwoord.
Painful raw honest & AMAZING art, ❤️ you Die Antwoord!!!!!
this interview is priceless. their answers are so to the point and awesome. zef
Come to Australia and I will be there. You reinstated my faith in the techno music scene adding so much more , just amazing and cant stop listening and watching you all.
Sue Kimpton he will be in jail if comes to Australia revenge porn is a offence
I love yolandi pure woman child.
Swearing in dutch and most sister languages of duch is very powerful
xcuse me but THAT interviewer was wicked cool!...and so are Die Antwoord.
She made Ninja and Yo-Landi feel so comfortable and Damn I actually watched the entire interview because it was so interesting listening to Die Antwoord talk about their cultures past and present and their music. Enjoyed!
lol... I love at around 8:05 when Ninja starts kinda gettin' down with the techno in the background. xD
why are people hating the interviewer, she is letting ninja and yolandi talk doesn't she? the more the better ;)
I saw them at Coachella it was amazing!!!
These two just do not disappoint. At all. You want to love them, and they just don't give you any reason not to.
"We used to have to no friends. We do now. Now we're famous."
I just stumbled upon Fatty Boom Boom, then downloaded Ten$Ion last night, and just started watching some clips of interviews, etc., with Die Antwoord. These guys are fantastic -- great music, great personalities, great senses of humor.
Why is everyone complaining about the interviewer? I think she is pretty good.
how can u not love these people?
i started whatchin this vid wen no1 was, showed it 2 some U.S. friends who loved it and ofcourse shared it!! and i started seeing the numbers sky rocket after that!! word of mouth dis pragtig!!
Cant stop listening to DieAntwoord ... congrats from Romania
the more i watch their videos the more addicted i get. i saw their first video 2 hours ago and i can't stop!
Best musician interview evaaar !
car crash music, these two are HONEST to?!?! crazy, these two are god-made!
"It was like a cg crowd.. lord of the rings or something...."
LOL
dude im happy u famous :) this girl is awsome :) kisses from Poland :)
This is like one of the best interviews of them. Interviewers mostly ask stupid question.
No kidding! The other day my friend showed me the short movie they did with Harmony and i kept looking at the other videos and interviews for like an hour.
what a good interview props to the interviewer.. asked the right question
great interview!
I LOVE YOLANDI
all up in the interweb....die antwoords so fresh...
Yolandi looks like she's trying to get away from the interviewer. Lmao
They have got such a raw sound, it really grows on ya...when ya ya find out what they are saying its pretty ruthless and fresh
7:32 dirty talk - wynter gordon :D
Ninja.... South African style.. nice to see you making an impact.. Keep putting out
the jamz
omg ! im getting crazy on the music in the background, so great ! :O
It is!!! I have been enthralled for hours now!
I love all the background tracks !!
Raw and in your face..I like it
When Ninja pointed at Yo-Landi when she wanted to talk... 🥺
These guys are so cool, I love watching their videos. the video they did for zef side with the interview is hilarious/awesome. also Im gonna see them in chicago in a few weeks so im pumped.
These two are the most entertaining people I've seen in an interview in along time maybe ever. He's hilarious and she's like hot and fucking cool. I love what she says at the end.
great interview
I love this guys love the music and everything about them.
i love this kind of band like them, enter shikari, mindless self indulgence, m.i.a., crystal castles, sleigh bells and so on. sth off the hook and insane.
i love what people cant understand. it just makes me feel excited. yea, pure excitement ykno.
what i gotta do is to buy their new ep and sit here wishing them luck
Car crash music lol....soooo true. I love it too. I kept thinking about a train wreck. Cyberpunk and I'm not sure they know that. I look at Ninja and think "Max Headroom lives again!" I really like the Afrikaans accent too. Dysfunctional artwork. Dystopian visions. Never thought I'd like something like this and now I can't leave it alone.
"like wild like fuckin pyscho like sped up techno, and like it's like it's like bubblegum like acid techno for kids... Sorry i was having a blank before I was looking at the palm trees." he is my fucking idol.
@phatalberto Oops... there goes your 100k! That's fast. Thanks man!
REALLY NICE LADY HOST, NICE INTERVEIW, SHOWS HOW DOWN TO EARTH THEY ARE WITH THE TALENTS THEY POSSES, LOVE EVERY ALBUM SO FAR, I THINK THEY WILL HAVE BIGGER HITS IN THEIR FUTURE, THEY GOT FLEXABILITY IN THEIR REPERTOIRE. GREAT MIXING, ALIEN POPERAMA
The mic passing was annoying. But I enjoyed it.
Also I don't see how they're an embarrassment, their work is actually really really good...if people can't see that, then they are morons.
And they are a new flavor, -3 them, curse words and all!
i love all the crazy references ninja say in all the interviews
finally someone competent interviews them
i love these guys
Congrats on the Record Deal with Interscope. You guys are an inspiration.
Around 5.30 Yo-Landi even mentions "Ice Ice Baby". I think they're great, used lots of stuff as inspiration. They obvioulsy must have had so much fun doing the interview.
These guy's are deeper than I thought, good shit.
they're full of creativity! awesome!
their accents are really awesome. and their music KICKS
Was at LED yesterday and saw Die Antwoord - Best set bar none. FOKKEN NEXT LEVEL!!
these guys killed it at coachella!! sooooooo sick!!!
OMG, not to be too off topic, but you can totally hear the "bulletproof (remix)" by Hyper Crush at 18:00! I didn't know it had gotten around. :D
awkward interviewer, she should've sat further back and given them both mics. lmao
Great interview but it was so awkward. Why was the interviewer sitting in between them? If they were all mic'ed up then sure thats fine but seeing her fumble between Ninja and YoLandi with one mic was painful.
Ninja has some of the best tattoos I've ever seen. He's very honest too, "We don't really have any friends"
lol 9:48 ninja one's head in the cloud , the journalist trying to find what he's looking at :D
Yo-landi is amazing.
You wont be able to stop looking up interviews , listening to their songs etc. it's like a disease of the mind 0_o
I want these two full flex heppines as well as Leon i love them so greatley!! and to the winers: these beings have seen struggle and persistence & hard times, don't judge them!
@grey1pvc I'm a South African living in South Africa. I love these dudes. Their concept is very authentic and should carry them to the top!
...overnight success, twenty years in the making..
awesome!!
Die Antwoord has destroyed my depression! please come to ny usa!
what is the song playing in the beginning of this video, not "Enter the Ninja," the one after it.
I love artists who hone their craft for years, end up getting so frustrated with there talent, and in the end come out all refined through all the trials and ideas. Then they just throw everything theve done and learned out the window and re-invent themselves. Like taking a Picaso and tearing it to shreds. That is Die Antwoord.
His Ninja analogies are genius.
A breath of fresh air.
This place plays the best music ever. Every song played in the background has been awesome
whats the name of that song where ninja is bobbin to? somethin like "touch the way you touch" what is that?
Silly commenters attacking the interviewer. That's Xeni Jardin, one of the hippest tech and pop culture writers around. Her post about them on BoingBoing birthed the whole Die Antwoord explosion and is certainly the reason they were invited to Coachella in the first place.
Woow their accent is So coooool ;)
I LOVE THE ANTWOORD!!!!!! COME TO UK PLEEEEAAASSEEEE
What happened to the Die Antwoord presentation? That was the best video
love the mgmt going in the back half way thru
WHAT GENIUS'S AND VERY TALENTED BOTH THEM TOGETHER, GENUINE PPL.
..overnight success that is twenty years in the making..
awesome!!
@owaing23 do you know the name of the song? Thnx in advance
Sick La Roux mix coming in at 17.50 love it.
You can even hear at like 8:34 he kinda drops his accent for a little... These guys are brilliant...
these guys are legends
"the interwebs" ... love it
I just discovered them on youtube a couple month's ago.I didn't know they ever came over to the U.S. Come to visit anytime Ninja and Yo-Landi because you are amazing and we Love YOU!..even though the swearing is a little much(since I'm 56 and swear about 5 times a year, lol),it add's to the flavor and this is what you are! Don't ever change, just keep on surprising and entertaining;)
best thing is the music in the background - deadmau5 live @ coachella...
I just lov them! Big up form Bulgaria! Keep it going!
Whats the name of the song after the boingboing logo.... its driving me crazy I cant think of the name.
