I think the ECM in XMIT mode works selectively. For example, if you turned on XMIT before you left the boat an inbound Mig wouldn't get an azimuth from 100 miles out because your ECM wouldn't start broadcasting until it detected the Migs radar. If the Mig turned on his radar at 30 miles, that's the point when your ECM would go active and If that Mig turned cold your jammer would go quiet.
@@leopard1tank823 the plane has different modes to dispense flares, you need to find the "CMS Dispense" button in settings. It works on manual override or semi only
You do the best videos, really appreciate them. Finally started adding bad guys into my missions and I have been getting shot down a bunch. Also, carrier can't be hit with missiles, at least, not when I shoot the attacking missiles. Their SAMs always knock out my harpoons.
Really the best man. I started to learn the F18, it makes so much fun, but it can be overwhelming stress full with the complexity for the first times, after a while it gets better. Thank you so much for your cool tutorials, today i flew online in an 4ya MP capture base mp server, i did shot down 1 enemy airplane by gun, 1 by aim9x, killed to radars by harms (agm 88cs). The aero space was full of enemy threats, full of friendly and uknown and enemy planes, i did only check the half of things i was doing, and i was not trained enough to control and steer everything how i want it to steer. But still like a wonder i survived this shit, and took my plane back home and did land succesfully. I was so fucking prowd of myself, and thats the best way to learn things, but punishing when you get shot down. Still big respect Grim Reapers! Greets from bavaria. Even with the A10C i learned so much from you, in this plane im already advanced know and i know what im doing....but with the f18 its my school time. CYA
I am new to the hornet, I have only some experience with the A-10 and I am pretty overwhelmed with air to air combat, about how to position myself and how not to get an IR missile into my backside. Can you give me some links to tutorials and guides that got you started? I find many detailed tutorials but I did not find a video about the real basics that give you an overview.
Its not that it is super complex, the military is very good at breaking down complex tasks into simple procedures, lol. The problem is there are so many systems and they interact with each other, and so the procedure list in 3 miles long, lol. By the time I get to the 2nd mile Ive forgotten the first mile, lol.
I believe someone posted a method on the DCS forums, for how to edit the .LUA file that contains the dispense programs default setup. So if you have a setup that you always run with, but can't be arsed to set it up every time you fire up a new plane, you should be able to change the default programs like that.
Unless things have changed in latest open beta, the ECM does not work yet. It can be switched on but does nothing. The auto program for chaff and flares is also not currently implemented. Coming later in the EA
How would the airplane or the Automatic Countermeasure system know when a IR missile had been shot at it, there is no tone or early warning when a heat seeker is shot because it doesn't use radar. Can anyone explain?
There are sensors on the F-18 that detect the exhaust of the IR homing missile launch, basically any rocket launch. These days these detectors are so good that they can detect the missile itself without the exhaust.
I guess that as you can be hit with an IR missile without the Hornet detecting it, then it might be the case that Disp Switch Forward should be set with a view to defeating (primarily) IR missiles which the pilot has seen with his eye in Auto Mode? For example you have a mig on your tail and see a missile come off the rail without warning so the Auto is going to do nothing so you can be sure it's an IR missile. So Disp FWD and drop flares only?
Question: How does the (semi-)auto system decide when to deploy flares, considering that IR-guided missiles are not detected by the RWR? I assume in semi-auto it uses flares programs when there's no incoming radar-guided missile detected by the RWR, so it assumes you are facing an IR-seeking missile. But that doesn't explain how the auto mode decides if and when to use flares. So maybe the system has sensors detecting incoming missiles?
Maybe a stupid question, but how is the computer going to know when a fox 2 is launched at it in order to deploy flares automatically while in auto mode as you say? Are you certain it deploys chaff and flares in auto, or perhaps it's just chaff? That'd be helpful for me if so as that's how I always set up the f14: chaff on auto, flares on pilot (single use). But then I wonder... f18 cms looks simplified. I don't know if I can launch single flares while chaff is in auto
someone explain chaff and flares and i must something little correct modern chaffs use carbonfibers instead of metal strips the fibers are cut half lenght to the radar frequencie for a better reflection rate therefor on the radarscreen appear a huge echo
Samantha Willmer Flares is really hot magnesium dispensed out of the plane. It burns hotter that the engines to deter heat seeking or Fox 2 missiles like aim 9. Chaff like becomes just interference and tries to distract fox 3 radar guided missiles like aim 120 AMRAAM
Quick question, assuming you were on a fight, and there was only one missile left on the enemy aircraft, could using the jettison flares/chaff button increase your chances on that missile not hitting you?

Terry is correct. At burnthrough distance and beneath, the radars reflection is at higher peaks than the jamming signal. Hence all comforts of Doppler effect can be used to determin distance, aspect and calculate a valid fire solution.

Does burnthrough work because of paralax?
Wul I"m guessing burn through is the radar pulses are stronger than the spoofing signal at shorter ranges thereby the radar ignores the spoof.
