      Bruce Wayne actually there’s so much more than just episode 5 about that theme. There are two main character arcs exploring exactly that. Three, now that I think about it.

    This series is based on a Japanese Manga and in the manga, at the end of a volume where a character(s) died, the artist puts a pic of the dead character(s) ascending to heaven. The only exception is Tucker who is shown burning in hell as his daughter and dog ascend to heaven.

      It's debatable. Some people think it is, but it's definitely not a universal opinion.
      I'll say this much. I've seen at least one list of the top saddest anime moments where FMA/FMAB scored two spots in the top five. This episode rated number 3, and another episode coming up was number 1.

    The whole Tucker situation gets more fucked up to think about a little later in the series.
    And as for Tucker's accusations that he and Ed are the same... I think it's more along the lines of doing what they did out of curiosity, with no regard for the cost. Tucker views Ed as not truly having any compunction against human experimentation or transmutation because Tucker can only process the knowledge that Ed committed human transmutation through that lens. Ed, on the other hand, is horrified by that accusation because, despite being motivated largely by emotion, when confronted by the Truth, his first reaction is to want to see more so he could understand what he was missing for human transmutation. He's obviously stopped chasing that, and has a set of morals to keep his curiosity in check, but I think Ed has such a strong reaction to Tucker's claims not only because of the anger over what was done to Nina and Alexander, but also because he's afraid Tucker just might be a little right.

    • @cas2762
      @cas2762 5 років тому +7

      I don’t think Ed wanted to see more out of curiosity, or at least, not mainly. I think his main reason was to try and find out how he can do it better and fulfil his goal, bringing their mother back to life. Before everything, Edward Elric is a little boy who lost pretty much everything.
      But he blames himself for what happened so when Tucker suggests that they’re the same, he fears it’s true. That’s part of his anger and fear. The other part is how appalled he is by the idea of someone sacrificing their own family for anything, and especially for something like money.

  • @invertin

    Funfact: The events of this episode didn't happen as early in the manga, there were a bunch of other adventures that are effectively filler and aren't covered in Brotherhood.
    I bring them up only because a lot of fans at the time kept saying things along the lines of "Alchemy is so cool I wish it was real" and the author, knowing the ways that alchemy could be misused, thought that was a really bad sentiment for the fans to have.
    This was her way of letting the fans know that alchemy isn't always good and hoo boy did it work.

    Remember what the mom said. The only words she said. She asked to be killed. Her existence was constant agony. And so was Nina's after transmutation. What Scar did was mercy. I only wish he took more time with the dad.

    I remember getting into this show, getting addicted to it and finishing both versions of it over a span of 3.2 months. When I reached this episode in the beginning my heart dropped out of shock and horror; from that point on I knew just how dark this show could get. Upon finishing the show I had seen things that defied and reimagined horror and I loved the show for it. The show does not use things like decapitation or bodies being torn apart limb-from-limb but it does show short scenes of bodies getting blown into mounds of flesh, people getting burned alive and there is blood...a lot of blood...in almost every episode. I was telling a friend about it and he said (sarcastically) "welcome to fullmetal alchemist".

    For me the most tragic part of this for me was the realization that Scar killing Nina was the only way she would find peace. She was in a horrible amount of pain.

  • @dimoned123
    @dimoned123 6 років тому +1

    I could be wrong about this but I remember hearing that the original creator of this series created this small storyline for several reasons, one of them was the fact that she would get a lot of messages from fans about how they wished alchemy was a real thing because of all the cool things that it could do and she thought that this type of thinking was wrong because people like Tucker do exist in our world so she wanted to get this message to her fans that if alchemy existed then people like Tucker (who seems like a good person but he let the power he had corrupt him) in our world would also have this power.
