    Great video. All of the tips and tricks are the secret sauce of repairs. I watched this to gain a standpoint of practicality of if it's worth it to save my beloved 15 year old "The Alligator" La-Z-Boy chair that now has 2 broken springs. Doesn't appear to be as much of a daunting of a task now.

    I spent over an hour trying to reattach my seat springs. All I ended up achieving was getting my hands covered in bruises and scratches and getting sweaty. I found your video and saw your tip about using the rope to pull the spring. This made it so much easier!!! Within 5 minutes, all four springs were reattached and I didn't lose any blood doing it. Before watching your video, I was thinking that my recliner was destined for the landfill.

    This is the best video we found to replace the springs on our recliner. Thanks, it made the job so much easier than when we were trying to figure it out on our own -- especially trying to stretch the springs.

    Great video. I would not have contemplated replacing a broken spring on my Lazy Boy seat without watching your video. I tackled the removal of the seat, then replaced only one of the springs. You must be really strong as I had a heck of a time pulling the spring back into the open clip. :) Once the spring was replaced, I then tackled re-inserting the seat back into the Lazy Boy. For some reason a had a really, really hard time getting the brackets to line up with the screw holes on the bottom on the seat. After several hours of trying I had to stop and come back to the problem. What eventually worked for me was to turn the Lazy boy around 180 degrees, lower the back of the chair as flat as possible then I was able the get the rear bracket screws on but no luck lining up the front brackets. The spring on both sides are a pain in the neck. I eventually laid the chair down on the side and got the screws in. I could not believe how hard it was to get these 8 screws back in. Do you have any tips?

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  4 місяці тому

      @alaingoulet4468 - Patience is probably the biggest thing that will help you here. It becomes obvious when reinstalling the seat that the brackets don't uniformly fall into place when you slide the seat back in. So, you have to work with each corner a bit to get the brackets aligned & the screws started. Just start the screws enough so they won't fall out, do not tighten. Save one of the front corner brackets for last. Push the last front bracket inward, depressing the spring. Have a helper then pull (or push) the seat frame up against the bracket. Whoever has a free hand at this point can move the frame until the bracket holes align with the holes in the seat frame & start the screws. Finish tightening all the bracket screws.
      Once you've done this a time or two it gets easier. You'll have less trouble the next time. ;)

    Thanks for the video. I got a spring from lazyboy free. If you are the original owner the parts are guaranteed for life. I did pay shipping and handling. I replaced my spring without removing the seat from the chair or removing any staples. Its kind of a bitch getting those crimps on and off but still easier than disassembly and removing all those staples. The part I thought would be the hardest, getting the spring on the top clip, was easiest part.

      @reclinerrepairguy4155  Рік тому

      @frankwallace58 - I use the same twine that's used to tie coil seat springs together. I'm not aware of it having a strength rating. It doesn't have to be twine, it can be rope or cord instead. It just has to be thin enough to loop around the spring & your hand. And strong enough so that you are confident it won't break.

      @reclinerrepairguy4155  4 роки тому +1

      Diane Nemea Laessig - There are Repair Clips that will attach to the backside of the front seat frame rail that may be used. But you would need the right type of frame board to use them. A front seat frame rail that is thick & solid wood. Those clips can be found here --www.amazon.com/B-C-Upholstery-Spring-Repair-Bracket/dp/B07CLDVCK9
      If your frame board will not allow you to fasten these clips securely, the spring tension can and will pull them loose!

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  2 роки тому

      @Shauna Morris - If you have an upholsterer in your area, take 1 of your old springs & have them cut new ones for you. If you're ordering them thru an online upholstery supplier, get the heaviest (thickest) gauge they offer. The springs will come on a continuous roll & you'll have to cut them to length. Be sure to turn down the ends so they'll stay in the clips.

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  2 роки тому

      @Tonda Thomas - Actually I've had so many spring clips from furniture stores, manufacturers, etc., that I haven't bought any in years. You don't need to match the original ones. Just get a paper or plastic-lined clip to reduce spring noise. Most of these clips are installed with small nails, but I use small screws instead.
      Here's a link to a supplier (I've never used them) that offers a spring clip style that I've frequently used --> uphsup.com/p-4815-sprc385004-spring-clips-no-sag-spring-clip-ek-paper-lined-each.aspx

    Thank you for your excellent videos. I am attempting to reupholster a 29-year old La-Z-Boy recliner. We started taking it apart before we discovered your video on how to replace the springs, so we unhooked the perfect looking springs (with lots of difficulty!) from the opposite end you show on demonstration. After watching your demos multiple times, and taking the whole chair apart, I noticed that the loops on the wire, that held that end of the springs, are worn and seem to be ready to break. Do you know where I might be able to find a replacement?

    can you put the springs on without the coil - then flat piece, are springs we ordered were 23" from wood to wood so we removed the coil-flat hook piece. Will this cause problems later?

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  3 роки тому

      @cindy mertens - You can attach the springs however you like, but it's usually best to attach them as they were originally designed to get the proper support and comfort.
      If your springs are longer than the originals, you can cut them down and turn the ends (where the cut was made) to match the factory installed springs.

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  2 роки тому

(At least the last time I tried to order some, they weren't.) And I don't know where else to look for them, other than online upholstery suppliers. They may be out there, somewhere...

    Hi , just found your channel , great videos . I just was wondering what kind of staple gun and staple size to re staple the fabric and foam ? I am replacing my seat springs ad I only have a staple gun for finish wood work it seems kind of large for this type of repair . Thanks again for the great info .

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  5 років тому +1

      Joe Caron - You'll want to use an upholstery stapler (they use fine staples). I use an old Duo-Fast electric upholstery stapler. Any upholstery gun (electric or air-driven) will use the proper staples. I use 3/8" for attaching fabrics and 1/2" for attaching foam. You can go with a bigger staple with foam -- 5/8" -- if you like.
      When stapling foam, be sure NOT to press the nose of the gun firmly against the foam. Leave a little air space, otherwise the staple will shoot thru the foam instead of attaching it.

    what is an acceptable alternative to use that will attach the cross brace to the zig zag springs. I cannot find this particular item where I am.

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  2 роки тому

      @Grant Samkin - It's usually best to use the same clips that the manufacturer used. That way the clips will be compatible with the spring wire gauge on your recliner. Contact the manufacturer or one of their dealers for parts.
      Keep in mind that some of these clips (there are different styles) may not install easily with pliers and may require a special tool.

    How does one measure the old spring (since they are curved) to ensure the correct replacement spring?

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  3 роки тому +1

      @Diana Verhulst - If you get replacement springs from the manufacturer, they will be the correct length. They use the chair ID#s to determine exactly what spring (& length) you need.
      If you're cutting springs to length from a roll, use a cloth tape measure -- or any flexible tape that can measure a surface that is not flat. Simply measure from end to end.

    • @reclinerrepairguy4155
      @reclinerrepairguy4155  5 місяців тому

      @baila4buddy17 - Make sure the front brackets are in the proper position & not flipped upside down. Also, when you put the front brackets against the inside of the seat rails, you're also compressing a spring at the same, while pulling up on the seat frame. Other times it just takes some maneuvering to work the seat frame into proper position.
      If you can get the holes in the brackets relatively close to the seat frame, the screws are sometimes long enough to start them. Once you have them all started, you can tighten them to draw everything together.
