If you have electrical gremlins or want to prevent them, first thing you need to do is toss out those old aluminium strip fuses, they are crap. You can buy new ones that use a copper strips instead and are way more reliable, also while you have all the fuses out clean up all the contacts with a wire brush. The aluminium fuse strips react with the copper contacts leaving deposits. They are called "bullet" or "torpedo" fuses normally, the old 80s Mercedes like the w126 used the same fuses.
I recently got two e28 528i for $500, they definitely need work but will be alot of fun to fix up (family has a large farm, we collect old cars). They look very similar to your e12, biggest visual difference i can see is the bonnet opens from the front instead.
The paint looks lovely. Polish would make her shine even more. Remember to follow with wax because I once polished my e28 bonnet but didn't wax and it peeled completely.

I once had one, it was 518 seriously underpowered and really rusted, Interior was mint and was white Vinyl and drove like a dream.

Awesome I just picked up a 633csi with the L-jetronic setup all it needed was a fuel pump gonna convert it to single pump.
