Valve is getting a cut because they did the backend work no one wants to do Multiplayer, chat, store, etc. They earn their cut and keep on working on the back end
I'm not saying they don't deserve the money they get, but it's mostly because they did most of the work already. Now it's self sufficient. (for the most part)
Bro, as soon as I read the title anxiety hit me like a nuclear blast. Even though it says no even the vague possibility of Valve being bought out, let alone by Microsoft, would be absolutely horrifying
Government barely let Microsoft buy Blizzard Activision. If there was an actual deal made for a Valve acquisition I have a hard time seeing that working out.
Agree, this bothers me a lot too! Carrying it through heroic game launcher into steam interface on all my machines so I never have to open tha god awful epic abomination, ever.
Hey not sure if this is an option for you, but when I wanted to acquire a game (LotR War in the North) after they removed it from steam store I was able to buy an old steam key on G2A and add it to my steam library that way.
@@halozumbadaddy7459 LOL, I have looked. currently on G2A and Kinguin (lowest price) they are going for $400 usd -not including fees.... Won't be splurging on that unless I come in to a few mil $$ 🤣
I have a feeling when Gabben passes away, Microsoft is going to swoop in and acquire Valve unless Gab hands the torch over to a true successor of the company. I hope he has someone in mind. I truly fear for Valve when Gab goes.
Depending on the courses students are taking for Trades, Tech, Engineering, etc classes, the SteamDeck is a huge value for the cost. Especially if you get a third party dock, mouse, keyboard, and can use almost any HDTV or monitor when needed. Being able to use a PS5, PS4, Switch, and many other controllers with it too makes it super easy to play games however you want.
The necessary amount would not be 16, but over 100 billion dollar. ;-D. Valve is making 16 billion per year, so you can't buy valve for the same amount. To compare it with Activision makes 7 billion per year and was sold for 68 billion to microsoft. So valve would have to be much more expensive. Valve not only have steam, but also great game franchises like cs2, half-life, portal, ... and besides that they make hardware like steam deck, index, ... and they develop steam os, steam vr and source 2.
I think instead Valve should release an actual Steamdeck "deck" a console like box, like those old Steam Machines but just one sku that's like Xbox Series S tier or something. That would knock Microsoft Gaming out of the ring. They are not Xbox anymore.
I thin Xbox is gonna beat em to the punch with the next Xbox and have Steam on it. If that was the case I'd prob already own a powerhouse console for the living room.
I’m pretty sure that is exactly what’s going to happen. Xbox is on the way out and steam has learned a lot from the steam machine missteps. Microsoft will step out of console gaming by eliminating the Xbox. Steam will fill that void. Most Xbox fanboys after severe depression and one too many red bulls and monsters and a huge room full of old Doritos bags will finally realize all their games were already on steam anyways. Gamepass will probably live on the new steam machine console. As well as on Nintendo devices and PlayStation consoles. I honestly can’t wait.
@@j_dun4830 I think you could be right but it's still an Xbox. It'll be expensive, too. Like I think Microsoft will make Xbox an enthusiast product like Surface and no one will want that, except Microsoft people. Valve could still release their own box.
No-one talked about layoffs in court during the acquisition because most governments do not care. Their only concern was market dominance and stifiling of competiton, the opposite has happened with xbox imploding.
Hah! Thanks for calling out RetroArch for its horrible menus . Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for having RetroArch, but those menus are a real PITA to use. It’s why I’d rather use MinUI 9/10 times, even with the reduced features.
I don't trust many CEO's but I don't see Gabe doing this ever. I also don't really seeing him as the type of person to retire early, he's probably already enjoying his job plenty and he has the freedom to do other projects if he wishes. He doesn't need the money.
These rumours probably stem partially from that old Microsoft internal email which was published to courts during Microsoft's Activision acquisition, in which both Nintendo and Valve were listed as targets for Microsoft takeovers, should the opportunities ever present themselves. There was never really any true intent mentioned in those emails, and like you said, neither of those takeovers would ever happen, particularly with the hardship (and now negative fallout) over the Activision deal. Regarding the rumoured new DOOM title, unfortunately, we can't expect composer Mick Gordon to reprise his role in creating the soundtrack for it. After his work on DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, he and Bethesda fell out over alleged missed payments and the now never-released DOOM Eternal Official Soundtrack. So, expect a new composer for the new DOOM.
I've been waiting for this golden age since GameGear. Since GPD handheld PCs have been releasing every 6 months. I love how there is a variety as well, with different concepts, so there is a handheld for everyone, which is good because people like different ways of playing. I want to pair AR glasses with handhelds, If you think about it, you could make a handheld PC that doesn't need a screen, just a controller and AR glasses, then you save more battery not having a screen. Also, the 3-in-1 gaming Pc tablet/laptop/handhelds are like having your iPad and steam deck in one device.
If Microsoft ever bought valve, it would be the end of pc gaming. So glad Gabe is such a legend, especially saying he'd rather liquidate before selling to them. Edit: aya just flood the market, with incriminatal upgrades/ weird hardware configurations

Gabe owned 50% of Valve 10 years ago. 4 years ago, it was rumored to be 25%. According to Forbes, Gabe's latest net worth is $4b, so $16b price tag checks out. Crazy revenue doesn't equal profit.
The Pocket DMG kinda incapsulates why I’d rather choose an Anbernic device. It’s nice looking but it’s completely impractical for its price point. It would be attractive but it just isn’t because it’s $500 I can get a RG35xx plus for like 50 or below and it would play the same things I’d have played on that
Interesting to hear that on Ghosts of Tsushima, specifically that it may confirm they should wait longer. Because for me the longer they wait the less likely I am to buy it because the hype around it has died so immensely that I end up not caring anymore.
Just set up and updated my R36S to ArkOS 2.00 along with wifi so can get that art work from scrapping and not worry about retro achievements as I play. Also have that in the airport with others complex around using my steamdeck. And also I get not wanting to miss my achievement but as long a I have wifi around my make shift adapter doesn't stick out much an makes me fill like it has native wifi. All that being said, love my steamdeck. Best purchase in I don't know how long.
So... Did anyone check where this rumor came from? It was some guy on Twitter. Fanboys on both sides lost their mind actually believing this. It's insane.
I am so sad I wont be able to attend Too Many Games to meet everyone. I really wish you all a wonderful time! Super fun episode today I am super hyped for that special episode!!
The UWP sells more than Games. Although Steam does sell some select applications, it is nearly all games, and those apps are usually related to streaming games or other game related tasks.
If Microsoft brought Steam and executed it properly: Get a complete gaming eco system by combining Xbox & Steam - a handheld, console/steam machine, VR, with excellent controllers (although hopefully something with hallsticks) and a cloud service offering. The Steam Store/Big Picture Mode/Steam OS as the standard interface + additions of apps that are daily drivers And the cynic in me thinks we're more likely to get: Steam Deck/VR demised and told to buy the monthly subscription of XBOX cloud gaming as it has all the games we would want to play. Xbox's Gui interface, Steam Store rebadged as the Microsoft store - all not selling features in the store demised along with all "steam sales" No compatibility layer support for Linux No support for older games in libraries
I wonder if taking a steam deck and make it in to a clam shell with out losing to much, I know joy stick be a problem unless making the screen little thicker to have pockets for the joystick to be safe at the same time.
Just want to add to the game room question, the original 35xx only shipped with game room and no retroarch support, they later add it after everyone kept asking for it so theybjust kept it in. Also this new one has ppsspp added back to game room 😁
I couldn't get into Ghost of Tsushima until I was able to play it on the steam deck. I had the same struggle with the Wither 3 when it came out. as soon as I got the steam deck I played through the game no problem.
If Microsoft bought Valve, they are buying them for the IPs like Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, Portal, and Half-Life. They are not buying them to acquired Steam. Microsoft already had their own stores both for consoles (Xbox) and PC (Microsoft Store), they don't need Steam. Likely they'll just let Steam operate the way it is or merge them with the Microsoft Store.
Even if Gabe would like get brain damage or something and suddenly decide to sell to Microsoft... There is absolutely no way that regulators around the world would be okay with this. Especially right after everything they already bought in gaming and I think the impact of this would be much larger than the ABK acquisition. Edit: ah you said that too a little later... Although for a slightly different reason. I don't think them letting a bunch of people go is anything that these regulators have anything to say about. They are concerned with anticompetitive behaviour and not with preservation of jobs. It's more that Microsoft would get way too much power over PC gaming.
Ghost runs about the same on PC as it does on PS though I think the winds are always blowing towards the marker, using a PS controller doesn't seem to hide it. Bought the controller just to play this game, the game seemed to not want to allow me to use keyboard/mouse but that may have been a Linux thing that went away after I added a controller, IDK: computers are weird.
@RetroGameCorps I feel your frustration with not wanting to play a retro game offline. There will be times where I just accept it and will play anyway, but more often than not I will take the effort to connect to wifi or my cell phone hotspot solely for retro achievements. @NerdNest Also thinking about going to TooManyGames, would love to catch your podcast live. One of the few podcasts (or youtubers in general) that I consistently tune in to. Keep up the good work!
Id thought about getting something like the APocket. But the Steam Deck just meets all of my gaming needs atm. Plus I have an ips GBA with an everdrive if I wanna go og hardware. But the Ab Pocket does look great.
I know little about Valve, Steam, and the Steamdeck but watching all of these videos makes me want to start PC Gaming and I really want a Steam deck but I'm pretty much broke. I enjoy these videos though.
Deal between Microsoft and Valve could be amazing. Imagine all games on Steam with support of Xbox Play Anywhere. You can buy game once and play it on PC, Xbox, handheld. Device doesn't matter. You can play wherever you want and all your save files are synchronized between PC, Xbox and handheld. Currently only few games released on Windows Store like Valheim support Xbox Play Anywhere.
I bought my first game on epic games yesterday since avatar and immortals of Scrum. I picked up Assassin's creed Mirage for £16 cos they said I had £6 store credit. I collect the free games and play some of them. But usually buy on steam or quest 3.
The reason Valve and Steam are so successful is exactly BECAUSE they have put in a lot of meaningful work, and continue to do so. Personally I have zero interest in these low effort anbernic/ayaneo devices, so much waste.
Microsoft would turn it into a streaming service or shut it down and add all the games to xbox streaming service, or shut it down so you can only play ideology approved newer games."You will own nothing and be happy"
I love my steam deck, but the best next thing valve could do is to find a way to have a custom soc from nvidia, even tho, i would feel bad for amd but there is no denying nvidia makes hyper efficient and powerfull technological solutions too.
Regarding Valve, Gabe Newell will ultimately sell Valve and its worth discussing. Microsoft most likely will be the highest bidder. I simply don't want more consolidation, so Microsoft buying Steam wouldn't be any worse than if Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, or EA acquired Valve.
the pocket dmg is one of the worst packages I've ever seen when taken as a whole. id ask for what they were smoking but at this point I'm scared to take it if I was offered
I know Gabe won’t let this happen. The fact this rumor is even circulating maddens me. Microsoft already destroyed console gaming now they wanna destroy PC gaming? Fuck I hate Microsoft
Russia definitely hit the nail on the head with your analogy of Kingdom hearts. But I'm still a big fan and I'm really excited that it's coming to steam.
Doom Eternal came out March 20 2020 so it is right when the pandemic was hitting. Also it came out the same day as Animal Crossing switch so that is where all the AC and Doom crossover stuff came on the internet.
Ghost of Tsushima is actually a great handheld game... been playing this more and not feeling like I'm missing out on much graphically because it looks amazing on the Deck Oled...
The steam deck will evolve in the years....to come and the value of steam will go up and console games will fade. The ability to mirror games will be refined with mobile phones and steam deck. then the steam deck and mobile gaming will become the standard moving forward. with pc games as a desktop alternative with cross play. steam cares about the gaming customer. and just offers a great service through the years maintaining consistency.
Love the show. Just to say windows sucks on handhelds. I love the steamdeck thanks to the OS and the touchpad. These handhelds need a stable OS that gets updated continuously like steam OS.
Love the show. Love Russ as well. But can someone please tell him to take an actually drink of water. He always does barely a sip. There’s no way any liquid gets in to that man when he drinks.
There are to many handhelds i want a xbox handheld but windows sucks on handheld i thought about steam deck but the multiplayer games i want to play dont really work unless you tweak thinga i like my switch so im probably just gonna get its sequel
I had this hot take a while ago when someone floated the idea of Apple buying Steam. I think Valve may be able to buy MS if they wanted. They sold 800M on lootboxes for CSGO alone last year... That 16bn rumour was spurious at best. Activision Blizzard cost 60Bn or thereabouts. In IP alone Valve is worth more than that not to mention that if Valve says "Half Life 3" they will basically print money. Valve is far bigger that people imagine. The level of people they have working for them on finance and business strategy... Yanis Varoufakis who later went on to be Greece's finance minister, an academic with a loooong track record of published literature and one of the top academics in his field in the World was their lead economist. Valve does a ton of work on the background.
@@maxducoudray 100 bln? Valve could definitely afford that. From palworld alone Valve made 48M in a week. Helldivers? Another 50 or so million. Plus 15M a week from selling lootboxes in CSGO plus all the other metric ton of games sold on steam that Valve takes at least a 20% cut. Gabe Newell is estimated to be worth 8 bln. We have no idea how much valve is worth but it is a hell of a lot more than 100 bln.
@@BernardWilkinson that is a lot of money. It is also completely meaningless as Microsoft wouldn't be sold just like Valve wouldn't my hot take is just that. A hot take. Thing is if activision blizzard is worth 60 bln how much is valve worth? Valve apparently makes around 10 bln a year with 130 million monthly.users. that is a lot of money. A lot of data. That is not counting the IPs valve holds and less tangible thing like how much money would Valve make if they announced Half Life 3? The hype would be insane. It would probably be the most sold video game ever. It is a hot take and I don't think it can happen or will happen but Valve is worth a lot of money.
Could they add game pass to steam? 🤔 I don’t think Microsoft can buy Valve but would it make sense for valve and Microsoft to work together and „merge“ their ecosystems a little bit? Steam on XBox and GamePass on Steam?
@@luca7x689 I don't think being on xbox is a fruitful endeavour, regarding the fact that console sales have been low. Steam being as they are I believe is the best

It'd be good for us for Microsoft to buy Valve IF there are close contenders to Steam. Valve "turning evil" would really open up the PC game storefront competition. As much as I like Steam, it still bothers me that there is no relevant competition.
I heard that Gabe only owns 25.5% of value his wife also owns 25.5% of Valve and the employees owns the other shares. So Gabe can be circumvented if Microsoft gets the employees and wife to agree to the sale.

Great discussion!
Hopefully Valve just remains Valve
I love my steam deck, but the best next thing valve could do is to find a way to have a custom soc from nvidia, even tho, i would feel bad for amd but there is no denying nvidia makes hyper efficient and powerfull technological solutions too.
Regarding Valve, Gabe Newell will ultimately sell Valve and its worth discussing. Microsoft most likely will be the highest bidder. I simply don't want more consolidation, so Microsoft buying Steam wouldn't be any worse than if Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, or EA acquired Valve.
His son is actively involved in the company so I doubt it. It will just pass to him if he's not already running it now.
Pipe dream
I remember when Steam was on the PS3. So being on an Xbox isn't that far fetched.
It looks to be not really much of an upgrade to my rg351p
Obi Won vs Darth Maul. Last battle, was cool.
I think i would make a lot more sense for valve to buy xbox of of microsoft.
Analogue needs to make a Pocket SP.
the pocket dmg is one of the worst packages I've ever seen when taken as a whole. id ask for what they were smoking but at this point I'm scared to take it if I was offered
25:47 - audio jump scare incoming.
I live near a highway and it’s motorcycle season.
Ghost of Tsushima is actually a great handheld game... been playing this more and not feeling like I'm missing out on much graphically because it looks amazing on the Deck Oled...
I’d imagine is even better in the Kurosawa mode.
@@NerdNest Oh! I haven't even tried that, thank you 🙏
At this point and time, You'd have to assume Microsoft would just ruin valve
Imagine the sheer amount of piracy that would happen if valve sold to Microsoft.
How is steam in danger, given they're not public?
Love the show.
Just to say windows sucks on handhelds.
I love the steamdeck thanks to the OS and the touchpad.
These handhelds need a stable OS that gets updated continuously like steam OS.
VALVE dont sell out to the MICROSOFTBULLIES
Love the show. Love Russ as well. But can someone please tell him to take an actually drink of water. He always does barely a sip. There’s no way any liquid gets in to that man when he drinks.
54:41 Trying not to spoil the death of a character that most casual fans thought Obi-Wan already him killed decades ago 🤣🤣
Kingdom Hearts is amazing. It's more an anime with disney characters in it, it's not catering to little kids at all haha
There are to many handhelds i want a xbox handheld but windows sucks on handheld i thought about steam deck but the multiplayer games i want to play dont really work unless you tweak thinga i like my switch so im probably just gonna get its sequel
Microsoft might want to buy Valve, but nobody with half a brain believes this is happening. 🙄
If valve was sold too Microsoft I would jump back too using Sony PlayStation
This baseless rumor pops-up every year or so. As long as Gabe is alive, it's just not going to happen.
Valve couldn’t buy 10% of Microsoft…
@@maxducoudray 100 bln? Valve could definitely afford that. From palworld alone Valve made 48M in a week. Helldivers? Another 50 or so million. Plus 15M a week from selling lootboxes in CSGO plus all the other metric ton of games sold on steam that Valve takes at least a 20% cut. Gabe Newell is estimated to be worth 8 bln. We have no idea how much valve is worth but it is a hell of a lot more than 100 bln.
M$ has been valued at 3 Trillion.
It is a hot take and I don't think it can happen or will happen but Valve is worth a lot of money.
whats your opinion on playing steam games docked, I find the graphics and performance better than xbox series s, can someone confirm that?
Do planes not have WiFi. I'm British so don't travel far enough to fly. Parents do. Lol I suppose without starlink it would be impossible.
He got arrested at the Nintendo store.
I am super excited to play kingdom hearts games on steam deck oled.
there's only soo much a man can spend , gabe is already set for the rest of his life.
Could they add game pass to steam? 🤔 I don’t think Microsoft can buy Valve but would it make sense for valve and Microsoft to work together and „merge“ their ecosystems a little bit? Steam on XBox and GamePass on Steam?
They could. Would Valve be okay with that?
@@NerdNestI doubt it, it would eat away valves cut from sales. Especially with game pass being a pretty big financial failure rn
This is why steam would be on XBox
@@luca7x689 I don't think being on xbox is a fruitful endeavour, regarding the fact that console sales have been low. Steam being as they are I believe is the best
I got tired of pc handhelds don't see the point of getting one if there only one storage options,I recently backup my physical cd games into sd card and just wish I can load them into these windows handheld but can't since there no sd card slot but mirco sd
Lol Bill your knowledge of Ghost of tsushima is a little off in terms of the game mechanics 😉 Still love your videos keep them coming!
Well I played it 4 years ago. But what did I get wrong?
Nope leave valve alone
I got to start earning achievements in life before I start worrying about getting them in Video games 😞 I always been an under achiever although I did beat my main vice in life. So that's an achievement won't say what it is. Wholesome channel and all.
It'd be good for us for Microsoft to buy Valve IF there are close contenders to Steam. Valve "turning evil" would really open up the PC game storefront competition. As much as I like Steam, it still bothers me that there is no relevant competition.
I heard this story in 2009 20011 ect. Nonsense.
I heard that Gabe only owns 25.5% of value his wife also owns 25.5% of Valve and the employees owns the other shares. So Gabe can be circumvented if Microsoft gets the employees and wife to agree to the sale.
Ms wont buy steam, steam cant afford xbox. Either way, consoles are on a decline.
