Really nice review! Keep up the good work. Those are some cool shots of the watch, I really like when you do shots from further out like with your hand in pocket and arms crossed etc, really gives a better idea of how the watch wears. I ended up ordering one of these, can't wait for it to come!

I recently purchased a SM submariner homage out of curiosity. I've been seeing a lot of praise for SM lately in my review searches for brands. Coming from owning Seiko and quartz Grand Seiko I was on the fence. But once I got the SM in hand I was impressed. The logo I'm still on the fence with as it's kind of big and takes up a lot of space, but the overall quality, weight, finishing is impressive. Keeping time well after a week now. If this is the quality you get from SM it's going to be hard to not consider another one in the future. I've been eyeballing the Smiths and the Longines conquest and hydro conquest. The SM is looking like a nice option as it has thrown it's hat in the ring now.

To be honest I was eyeing the Smith for a while but the difficulty in getting it and the printed indexes just pushed me away. I bought the tisell last year to scratch the hitch, but its 39mm size didn't do it for me. I was waiting for SM to come up with one, it took them long and multiple intents but I believe they finally got it perfect to this time.
I think this SM 37mm explorer will complement to the perfection my ironwatch OP homage.

I went with the black dial San Martin with PT5000. I can't wait to get it. This will be my first San Martin. You have the only video of this particular version with black dial that I can find. One of the earliest reviews on the newest San Martin explorer model. Smiths may got the proportion right, but San Martin has creative design twist with applied indices. That's how a homage watch should be done, taking classic design with different execution .

Nice upload. The 1st time I've watched a video of yours.
I have quite large wrists so have both the Tisell 39mm Explorer 214270 MkII homage (Miyota 90S5) and the San Martin 39mm Explorer with 'old radium' lume.
The Tisell was one of my favourite watches, despite being a reasonably humble timepiece. I bought the Tisell because I was considering picking up a 214270 MkII, but saw no need. The Tisell is that good (for the ridiculously low $ at least).
I now prefer the San Martin. I've gone custom dial both times I've bought San Martin. It's a good experience designing ones own 'brand' and logo.
With the market going bonkers, so many people buying solely due to brand recognition alone and the general lack of availability it's refreshing to be able to buy such simple watches of such good build quality so cheaply. The longer I'm in the hobby the less I care about 'luxury" timepieces and the more I appreciate the law of diminishing returns.

However, the San Martin brand is incredible. The only Asian company, apart from Seiko, I am confident in collecting beautiful timepieces from. I only just recently found out about their Rolex Bubble back California style watch. Incredible. I'm mind blown. Literally. Great quality 👌🏼

I don't understand why no one likes the Hex logo. Would it be how I would design a logo for them? No, but it looks bar better than the boring plain print, or the cursive print. They took the time to design a logo to represent their brand, and the applied version is actually finished very very nicely. Take a look at it under a loupe. It made me like it even more.

    • @GabrielSilverstein
      @GabrielSilverstein Рік тому +1

What you are saying is correct, however I think that the SM Hex logo takes up too much prominence when on the dial. In that setting it directs your eye to the logo, which battles for visual space on the face. The triangle on top is supposed to anchor your eye to the design but it "fights" for attention with the logo.

San MArtin smartly stepped up with this model when the Smiths Everest PRS-25 is nearly impossible to buy new. The thing is Smiths has some Everest history bragging rights as well as the explorer 1016 although the brand is no longer under the orginal ownership.

Both awesome watches. I like that the San Martin is a mashup of a 1016 and a modern Explorer, having applied indices but in a vintage font. SN020-G-B2.... I have the cyan blue version (aka Tiffany blue) and it is, indeed, awesome. I think the Smiths' gilded hands have a slight edge over the San Martin, but it's not a dealbreaker for the SM. And then again the SM's applied numerals and indexes are so beautiful that they trump the Smiths' printed ones. What I resent in a way is that you cannot just shop for the Smiths but that every time it's a gamble whether or not you will be granted the privilege by Eddie to order one the next time he sees fit to open up his shop.

I see the Eddie / Timefactors buying situation differently.
Yeah, the buying process is a pain in the arse, however I respect the reason why.
I know for a fact that he has rejected more than one lucrative offers to sell the brand because he does not want what he primarily does (extremely faithful re-issues of rare and expensive mostly military issued pieces ect.) to become too commercialised. Yeah, it impacts us as potential customers but I like it that he's making watches as an enthusiast for enthusiasts. He's also getting pretty old. I find the way he protects his brand from cash grabbers admirable.
      cheers.

Both the sellita sw200 & the pt5000 are clones of the eta2824. So both copy eta. As does the stp1-11. The patent ran out on the eta2824, that's why so many company's copy it, but it's legal. Seagull has a clone as well.

The San Martin is 36.5, actually....
The Smiths is 10 grammes heavier than the SM. The Rolex' hands are proportioned exactly like the San Martin, so it stays very close to the watch it homages. I want both: the Smiths' glossy dial, the gilt hands and the rivet bracelet are very, very desirable.

Smiths may have been to the top of Everest, but it wasn’t this model and wasn’t this Smiths. Eddie Platts bought the brand name.
He used to make his watches with german manufacturers like Fricker. Like everything else, manufacturing is now carried out in China.
They are unobtainable because they are popular with WIS, so scalpers buy the popular models to immediately place on ebay (usually with a “it’s too small for me” excuse) and a huge mark up.
Is that worth it for a homage, when you can scratch that itch for significantly less, without the hassle of beating 199 others at 2pm on a sunday?
I say this as someone who has at various times owned Speedbirds 1 & 3, PRS-14, PRS-29b, and a PRS-53, none of which were sold on for profit…
