    Best fitting selvedge jeans I have ever tried for my body type. The Weird Guy is my go to for all their jeans and I've found the sizing consistent between the different types of denim.

      @@Stridewise Understandable, I considered that after hearing your remarks in the 2nd half of the video. Only 34" inseam and no extra fits is a bit tough, but I wouldn't call it a low rise either. May be worth grabbing a cheap 2nd hand pair and seeing how the fit is if you haven't tried before. The fabric choices can be stellar some times!

    Wonderful work, Nick! I’ve been soaking in all of the reviews on various jeans you’ve posted and I’m leaning toward the Momotaro jeans you’ve posted about before. Hi Nick, I appreciate your detailed review.
    I was wondering how much shrinkage did you notice (length, waist, and overall) after your first wash? I have recently purchased a pair of these and was wondering how much extra inseam length should I keep for hemming to counter the post-wash shrinkage, haha. Anyways, cheers!

    Why is retaining the selvedge such an important issue these days,?
    Their are 4 main reasons why in he 70's it was cut to waste.
    Laser cutting machines cannot follow the edge of the fabric.
    It is impossible to keep the layers of fabric in exact register when using multi- layer cutting machines.
    When denim became more popular, wider looms were used, so not all jeans would have he outside leg cut from the edge of the fabric.
    Flared jeans do not have a straight seam.
    Therefore, it was simpler to cut from the center of the roll and end up with the waste on the edges.
    All woven fabric has a selvege, it is simply how the jeans are manufactured. Levi's are now retaining the edge on jeans cut from the edge of broad-loom denim ans selling them a a premium price, This allows then to retain the selvedge on around 25% of production.
    The whole thing is becoming something of a scam, since it saves carpet stitching and REDUCES production time.
    People are also commenting on the colored thread on the edge of the selvedge, not realizing that it is simply put there to identify the loom (for quality control) and type of weave. Traditionally reds identified 14'oz and greens 12'oz denim.

    • @overlycreative1
      @overlycreative1 4 роки тому

      I thought of some fun ideas regarding how to manufacture and let selvedge happen into production and distribution but then thought how collectors, elitists would spoil the fun and ruin it for everyone by sorting at stores and grabbing. So I erased my comment back to you. Sorry. Except for one thing, ordering from Levis online, then the factory could random the inventory and getting a pair would be like finding a shiny penny. 1 out of every 4 is different. But you are right, they should not command a premium price.

    • @wilsjane
      @wilsjane 4 роки тому +2

      +overlycreative1. Tho whole situation has become something of a joke, but the history is important.
      Firstly.
      ALL woven fabrics have a selvedge at the edges, otherwise it would be impossible to weave them. It is vital in curtain manufacture when more than one width of fabric needs to be joined up without tearing apart.
      Denim.
      Originally woven on 36 inch looms. So when jeans were first made, it was simple common sense to utilize the selvedge on the outside leg seams to save a lot of carpet stitching. The fabric manufacturers soon tidied up the selvedge to produce the appearance that we still see today.
      Mid 1960's
      Flared jeans, could no use the selvedge and jeans became more popular at roughly the same time. Therefore manufacturers were able to introduce wider looms and no one ever thought about all the edges being cut to waste.
      Last decade.
      Straight leg jeans came back into fashion. Smaller companies started producing good quality jeans. They did not have the money or handling capacity for the huge broadloom rolls. They therefore went to Japan and realized that using the selvedge gave the jeans a traditional look, saving them a lot of stitching at the same time, since they did not have the automated carpet stitching machines.
      The denim was not Sanforized, SIMPLY because the producers did not have the facilities.
      Result.
      People have gone crazy, spending a fortune on these jeans and not washing their pants for a year. I wonder whether any of them are married or even capable of loving a girl more than their jeans. 🤣
      Final Thought,
      What will happen if flares come back into fashion.? 😀😀😀😀

    A few questions 1. Do they have Selvedged Denim that isn't Raw, as I don't want it to fade/rub onto boots and transfer dye. 2. You wash non-selvedged to get the smell out perhaps once a week, yet raw doesn't require it, is that because people prefer style over smell or does raw have anti-microbial properties?
    Was looking at getting some Super Guy jeans but didn't know about the above statements and the price is more expensive in the UK :(

    • @mistilteinn3670
      @mistilteinn3670 5 років тому

      They only do raw unwashed. But raw denim doesn't normally require so much washing because the indigo repels smell. But once more indigo goes away from wearing and washing you will have to wash more often.

    • @NghiaHoang-nt4ib
      @NghiaHoang-nt4ib 5 років тому

      they have some denim that's dye with special dye that doesn't fade on to clothes. "Raw people" don't wash their denim frequently because they want to make the fading area more contrasting. You can buy a raw denim and wash it twice a week no problem, but it will weaken the fabric overtime

    Cold soak in still water then hung to dry. Maybe two weeks in a big ziplock bag and sat in the freezer. Usually do this maybe once a year. Ever since they’ve phased out smoking in bars and clubs my jeans don’t smell as bad. I play in bands so I was always In thick smoke. Then on tour you’d be lucky to take a shower once maybe twice a week so that stench got drilled in hahaha. Always able to wash face though, even if it was in a venue rest room lol. But yeah raw was the intended way so I like to uphold that tradition! Once you get into year three then oh man what a dream of a garment!!!!!!!!

    I want a pair that's tough to use on my motorbike. Reinforcement is good especially round the knees and with some Kevlar in the denim. The problem with. Some makes of biker jeans is that the style isn't like Wrangler bluebells denim jeans made around 1977. They were heavy quality denim that lasted 3 years instead of 9 months and that's on an active teenager who was poor as they were hard times then. Levi 501 have gone down in quality although the button fly and cut was comfortable and good. The wrangler cowboy work jeans were tough too and lasted well and had zip fly. These days the denim is under 12 weight so it wears out especially on the knees and butt.

    Wait, why do they stink more than your $400 jeans? Isn't it woven in Japan via shuttle looms? It's light-mid weight, more breathable than your mid heavies yet they stink more... What? I'd give them more credit than just entry level, they have gimmicks but not short on options. Maybe try a $300 18 oz. one to see if they also stink haha. Those look good on you btw.

    I will never buy Naked and Famous again. Their website directs you to their affiliate Tate and Yoko (Tate) to purchase the jeans. Tate does not permit refunds only store credit. Fine. But here is the catch - you can only exchange within 21 days of “fulfillment”. They don’t define the term. For me, fulfillment occurred before they ever shipped the jeans. I called within two days of receiving the jeans and was told they had to shipped back within two days. I couldn’t ship them back within that short period because of work. I donated them to Goodwill. Shame on Naked and Famous for this sharp business practice.

    Interesting ... still It is quite different thing to review a pair of denims vs a pair of boots. Dont think it is that much brand dependable ( quality ) as it is a matter of material - denim ( mill, run, weight, coloring etc ) selected. Brands ( N&F more than most ) often change materials, weights, mills, and even design / cuts, so it is not like you re reviewing RW moc toe which is more or less the same for a few decades ... you buy one pair from N&F this year and they are pobably not available or the same next year ... also variety is extraordinary and quality or feel is not that consistent within any brand...

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  5 років тому +1

      I try not to review seasonal stuff but their left hand twill has been pretty much the same for a while now, I think. The trickiest part with reviewing denim is I can only review pants that fit my weirdly shaped body haha
