I'm absolutely obsessed with that Yamaha engine. It looks like such a terrific aircraft engine and blows Rotax out of the water in pricing & performance.
I bought mine from Steve and excited to have the build completed. Crikey Steve, you never seen to be settled with the Performance mods. More fences, leading edge slats now. Look out 2020 High Sierra and Reno competitors. Steve Henry rocks!
I guess that 4 blade prop likes that screaming High RPM engine...and you can call that Jumping off the Runway and then Sticking the landing...most impressive for sure !!! its great to see another video from you, hope we get to see more.....
Holy crap man !! it looked like you were airborne in less than 20'. And the climb out. Holy cow man. Touchdown and stop in less than a 100'. That's just some unbelievable stuff.
Any idea what the cruise speed loss is with the slats? And don't say there wasn't one! By that I mean you have the excess power to overcome any minor added drag, so still cruising at 100 after adding the slats may just mean you're using a tad more power, not that the slats don't hurt cruise. I've heard everything from 10 knots (or so a Carbon Cub early adopter reported) to 2 or 3 mph.
I'm also a fast fancy foreign car mechanic who specializes in the exotics... among other things... high temperature metals that can be obtained in useful amounts easily.. bio plastic lighter and stronger than carbon fiber.. it's the original carbon fiber... so I have platinum and AuPt... and a few other things
Dan Marquis I’m sure there are people that would think Yamaha has drawbacks but I like it better than any engine I’ve flown with. I think there’s only a handful of airplanes flying with Yamaha so far but I know that quite a few are being built right now to fly with this engine. I wouldn’t really think It would be that good of an engine for a big heavy airplane but it’s awesome for a two seater like my Highlander.
Sufy561 It is ridiculously fun. The slats are made by Carbon Concepts in Alaska and they do move, they’re hinged at the front and they tip open and closed.
I've watched your older videos with the SuperSTOL. What are your personal reasons for favoring the Highlander over the SuperSTOL? There are very few people who are more awaited with these two planes then you, & I'd love to see a video contrasting the two. Thank you.
I'd like to try that with a Rotax 4tec which is a light weight 3cyl watercooled and supercharged jetski engine. They are a bit more compact that the yamaha and feature dual oil pumps to help them run in different orientations which should be a nice feature on an airplane.
They don’t serve any purpose at all for just a normal takeoff and landing like I’m doing here. Another thing that I really have fun doing is stol drag racing, and that’s what those panels are for. When I’m in a hard slip to get slowed back down they help me slow down quicker.
Reuben Gullackson lols. Thanks Reubin, I was looking at them thinking, they’d energise the air through turbulence, but I was so focussed on keeping the boundary layer attached, that I didn’t consider it to help with short landings. Always new things to learn. Cheers. 👍
I did fly about 750 hours on my own Superstol a few years back and I liked it but I just like my Highlander even more. There are a few simple things that I do to the Highlander that make it perform much better than if it were just stock.
It looks like you could use one more hand to run all the controls, has anyone ever tried putting a twist grip throttle control (like on a motorcycle) on the stick? Just a thought
That opening looked like a carrier take off - keep those movies coming Steve!
That climb angle is ridiculous 🙌

Dude, I’m so glad I’m not the only one haha! Apex FTW and I’ll def keep my eyes out to see how they fair over the long run
So awesome Steve... love this thing.. insane performance, and the right guy behind to the stick to make it all happen 👍
Steve Henry is amazing. Buying an airplane from him is highly recommended!
Cory Robin thank you!!
Incredible performance Steve! Going to be tougher than ever in STOL this year!!! Thanks for sharing.
Need more videos of this 300hp helicopter!!
Hi Steve, Thanks again for the ride the other day in your yellow rocket. Its just as impressive in side as watching from the out side.
WOW! Always loved STOL.. I remember the Wren 460 Cessna conversation.. (yes I'm 79 years old today). WOW..
Fell in love with watch STOL in Alaska. What a machine!

I just can't figure out what's more impressive: the plane, or your piloting skills.
Love that Yamaha.
Love it! Great video!
Absolutely stunning!👍🏻👍🏻

Holy Crap Steve! That was SHORT!!! See you in TX!
When and where in Texas
@@jcjammer1 lonestarstol.com/
@@GoZipper Thanks man. I will definitely be there. about an hour and 15 minutes from McKinney
@@jcjammer1 Yeah, I am hoping to make it. It is about 2 hours away.
Wow, that is super impressive!
That’s insane! Wow! Very cool! Thx
Steve: What a bad ass STOL! That thing is a fire breathing dragon. Looks like a ton of fun.

Just Brutal , The Draco Killer !!!
That’s insane man!!
That is incredible.
Holy cow that's not a run up, that just jumps into the air.
WOW the wheels hardly turn on takeoff! Well landing either! Just WOW
That is crazy short!, so awesome! Guess who is winning stol comps this year!
Very nice ride!
Oh. My. GOD! LOL! I laughed so hard watching this video! LOVE IT. I cannot imagine how much fun that is. :)
That's crazy Steve , hard to beat that take off,
Very impressive 😃
I've been following you for some time Steve. This video is incredible. I would like to be able to mount the Yamaha engine on my Savage in Italy.
Another great video Steve. I can't believe you actually have a "hater" leaving a "thumbs down" for that video.
Bart Goins it’s called a jealous person ;)
@@EdgePerformanceNorway It was the Rotax rep.
Awesome 👏
Insane!
Dang Steve that’s impressive.
My lord! You could take off from a drive way in that beast!
Awesome 👏🏼🛩👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Scrappy won't be the only game in town! This thing lands and takes off like a dragon fly.
Unbelievable!
Wow awesome

Just a hog of a plane !! and its painted to remind me of colours of the Tipperary Flag, the County in Ireland where I grew up... I love it ;]
Just "plane" awesome !

Wow, incredible take off performance. Which would perform better, YeeHaw or Draco, if it was running ?
Amazing performance, are there any drawbacks to flying the Yamaha? Are you aware of that engine being used in a heavier airplane?
Dan Marquis I’m sure there are people that would think Yamaha has drawbacks but I like it better than any engine I’ve flown with. @@SteveHenry it certainly gives that climb performance that every pilot craves
Steve - can you tell us more about your leading edge slats and share what speeds you are seeing on the top and bottom with that new engine?
Who made the slates on your plane
Whow! 👍
that looks ridiculously fun !!!!!!! sooo cool !!!! are those slats movable???
Sufy561 It is ridiculously fun. The slats are made by Carbon Concepts in Alaska and they do move, they’re hinged at the front and they tip open and closed.
@@SteveHenry Fantastic !! Do you have a video about them? I'd love to see the mechanism
I don’t have any videos specifically showing how the slats work.
I've watched your older videos with the SuperSTOL. What are your personal reasons for favoring the Highlander over the SuperSTOL? There are very few people who are more awaited with these two planes then you, & I'd love to see a video contrasting the two. Thank you.

Do it! Sounds awesome!
What model helmet/headphones are you wearing, there..? Wow, nice. You still favor the Highlander over the SuperSTOL..?
Omg!!!!
Curious about those acrylic panes on the wing struts, what function do they serve?
They don’t serve any purpose at all for just a normal takeoff and landing like I’m doing here. Another thing that I really have fun doing is stol drag racing, and that’s what those panels are for. When I’m in a hard slip to get slowed back down they help me slow down quicker.
what woud be the cust of a new plane ,nothing fancy, like yours in the video whit 200hp more our less??
Killer job in Texas Steve! What was it 52 feet?
tomcoryell Thanks, yes I had a 25 foot takeoff and 27 foot landing.
Holy Helicopter Batman
Man that Yamaha screams! Now can I get one to mount up to a sonex? Hmmm...
Steve, could you please tell us what the purpose of the holes is, on the inboard wing fences? Cheers.
Kathryn and Brad creating drag for sideslipping when drag racing

Lands in a backyard, leapfrogs from a driveway
That plane just hit the market.wonder how much$$?
How's the reliability of that engine? What kind of performance are you seeing? E.G. cruise speeds, fuel burn, range, stall speed, etc...
Brian Bills Steve has been flying or shall I say beating his engine for a year now and it’s holding up fine. 19 more being produced as we speak.
I am assuming they are fuel injected And what are the prices of the turbo and non turbo version?
So he's a shorty. Good on em..
Ракета !!!
What is the cruise speed on this airplane the way its set up?
Amos Chupp It’s real happy at 100 mph.
How old do you have to be to fly those planes and do you have to have a pilots license.
Draco who? Hey Mike.
Cant wait to see how scrappy turns out...
flip66five scrappy is going to be an other master piece of aviation.
Steve just wondering why you don’t fly a Superstoll?
I did fly about 750 hours on my own Superstol a few years back and I liked it but I just like my Highlander even more. There are a few simple things that I do to the Highlander that make it perform much better than if it were just stock.
It looks like you could use one more hand to run all the controls, has anyone ever tried putting a twist grip throttle control (like on a motorcycle) on the stick? Just a thought
I do have to move pretty quickly! I don’t know if anyone has tried a throttle like that or not.
What’s 7’s cruise speed? Range?
What you think about ICP Savannah?
I don’t have any experience with them but I know that I would not trade my Highlander for one of them just from what I do know about them.
Less than SHORT!!!
If anyone wants a zenith mine is for sale. I got to ride in that rocket ship last week and im hooked.
Это как он так летает?
What is the 65% cruise speed?
I’m sure 65% power would be definitely over 100 mph. I really don’t know what percent power I’m at except when I’m wide-open.

Safer than a helicopter! put'er down anywhere!
Put a bigger tail wheel on with a disc brake, and I bet you can do a zero feet take off!!!!!!!
just saying x2
Brilliance I say!!!!!!
1.5 second takeoff that doesn’t even seam real . Looks like a 30 ft stop does anyone know what one of these with basic avionics set you back
We sell these Highlander kits. It would be around $70,000-$100,000
