This is really something I needed to hear right now. Thank you so much. The voices have been so bad that I put down the drawing pencil for a month or so now. I look at my own work and see nothing worthwhile, nothing worth creating. I look at my work and hate it and myself so much. I feel like I should be better. Looking at other artists makes me feel so worthless in terms of my growth and improvement. It's lead me into (or maybe just coincided with) a deep depressive episode that's left me unable to get out of bed, unable to see the point in doing literally anything at all. This video couldn't come at a more perfect time and I really appreciate that you made it. I needed this so much. I'll be trying this advice and trying my best to change that inner voice.
I'm addicted to this kind of lesson, drawing while listening to your lesson Boosted my focus and it keeps me going till there's no more space to draw on. Splendid 😃
3:39 Wow, it's amazing to know I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Acting like a maniac waiting for his opponent to see the difference between the two and the frustration that comes when you see him drawing something you are not good at and you go desperately to try to learn it in order to catch up with him like a madman You don't know how much your words relieved me and I will work hard to apply it in my daily life thank you soooooooooo much❤❤❤
As someone who just started drawing it feels like im really doing awful. im 26 years old and never really did it because of my past everything i did i got bullied for in school and it gave me an really awful mindset for the future thats basically: "if your not immediatly good at it you should stop" which is a thought i entertained for far to long. this thought process is what drove me into Depression and kept me from following things i actually like (like i enjoy drawing but i want my art to be at least lookable without everyone going wow thats cringe but this is another can of worms i have to figure out) the revelation came to me just a few months ago where i just would.... pick up a drawing tablet and i just started drawing without any practice or real experience. it of course turned out awful..... or so i thought. my mindset swayed so suddenly to "hey this art actually looks kinda good" "hey maybe i should practice this" "if i focus on this i could get better" and just these thought were absoloutly mindblowing for me. I have come up with a few ways to "deal" with my depression but most of those WERE self destructive and its really hard to get a grip on whats real and what your mind is telling you if you go this endless cycle of "your just not good enough" a trick i found is you literally just tell yourself "STOP!" it makes your inner voice shut up for just a few minutes but if you occupy yourself with something like Music or a book or drawing this voice wont have any space to talk to you. it really does wonders. Another thing that really helps is sitting down with yourself and "talk" to your inner voice. Talk about the things you really think about your self objectivly, for me it was especially self hatred and self esteem issues and i just sat down. thought about it sometimes wrote it down because it seems less crazy to Write it down instead of talking to yourself but trying to pinpoint these thoughts and not finding any truth behind it is such a relief and your mindset will improve from it. I now shared some tips for how i deal with this stuff and i know it will go under in this sea of comments but i hope i can at least help a single person with one of those advices.
Again I always love the quality and information of your lessons, and kind of a off-note, watching you paint Jinx reminded me that Season 2 of Arcane is releasing. I haven't been able to see any episodes yet, but I'm am super excited to sit and watch!!

This is so helpful...I'm in a discord server with friends and everytime I post my art, it gets ignored or someone posts their art a few minutes later as if I didn't post anything. I It's so demoralizing but seeing this has definitely gave me a brand new perspective. It stings a lot cuz I know everyone in the server but because my art isn't "good enough" compared to everyone else's, my comments also get ignored, even not in art channels. I needed this wake up call because I expect at least ONE person to like my art but banking on that and getting disappointed after I spent 13 hours on something that looks simple feeling like it's wasted time just made me realize something new. Gained a few levels with this newfound knowledge. Thank you, Teach. I'm so glad one of my pixel art friends referred me to your videos. Don't worry, I paid the class fee a while ago! ❤🐉💧
Thanks Mark for these lessons. I really love seeing your drawing for ongoing animations, I hope to see some Bleach characters for the next lesson like Ichigo, yhwach, Inoue, Kyoraku, zaraki because I'm a big fan of the series.
This feels like general life advice to some extent. Your ancestors all did some amazing and crazy things, getting good at art doesnt even compare in some cases. Keep grinding
I really love watching you paint. I was only half listening because the painting was so mesmerizing! Really excited to find some time to watch season two. I find the art style very very compelling!
This video helped me alot, ive had this for years and it put me in a really unsafe miserable state, watching this now at the right time rlly helped, thank you❤
For me, I was most motivated when I took inspiration with a learning curve to it. Like watching someone or the artist themselves breaking down the aesthetic decisions in the drawing puts me in a more critical mood, makes me want to try out my own drawings.
I have just talked to my friend about this subject. Great timing. 👌🏻 As artists, I think, we tend to be a bit more sensitive. Introspection (not negative self talk!) is important. The artwork is beautiful! 👍🏻
for months now i've been in a pretty dark place in terms of art, whenever i finish something in digital i feel sad and hollow cause i can't find satisfaction in how my pieces turn out, but this may actually help with that. I'll start implementing it, thank you!
Spot on! I've been putting this to practice for a while now and it helps to hear it from you every now and then. It's great that you don't just focus on the technical side of learning art but also the well being, as like you say they are closely connected. As for the rituals, I make myself a nice pot of genmaicha or sencha in a pretty tea ware that I use only for that occasion. I made it my point to buy better quality tea and snacks to go with it. You can turn ordinary activities into a ritual just like that. And when I feel like extra effort, I put on a kimono for my tea ritual and then just wear it while drawing. It certainly elevates the mood. Everything else that you mentioned, like keeping clean environment, some physical activity and touching grass, I have found important as well. Thank you so much for researching and sharing that knowledge with us!
Seems like the voices in my head are getting louder and Marc heard them enough to make a class for everyone, what a cool dude! Thanks teach and sorry for being so late 😭😭
My inner voice is optmistic about the future but pessimistic about the present. Its more like: "You sux, but one day you will be good" It made sense in the past thinking this way, But now I become pretty good at drawing, and I still think that "I'm not there yet"
Same with me, I wish I could see my teen version reaction to my current art level. Maybe it would force mind to stage accurately my level of improvement.
@@NathGate It was a good mindset back then, our way to keep doing something we were bad at. But now its no longer useful but our brains got so used to think this way, so became our default mode.
Great video with an amazing artwork, I always love to see the timelapses. The topic is also very important, I feel like many people neglect how the mentality affects your art and efficiency I'm not an expert on a topic, but what helped me a lot is comparing myself to myself instead to others. I'm mostly blind to my own progress but once I feel down, I just scroll through my old artworks and look for the areas where I improved and things that I still can improve. It also helped me to not compare myself to others or how well received was my piece. In the end likes are only an additional reward and satisfaction from drawing should be the main one. Other thing I've managed to do due to recent therapy is learning how to argue with my own thoughts and twist them around. Instead of "I'm too bad to draw this" I go with "I'll do it the best that I can and in the future I will make it even better". Because that's also the case, with a greater skill and expretise, even if I don't like the piece now, nothing will stop me from redoing it in the future (though would be careful not to fall into the trap of ignorance) My biggest struggle is always to get started and stay focused on which I'm working
I really needed this video, as my inner critic is probably the core culprit of constant procrastinating and dropping most drawing ideas because "your skill is not enough", "you won't do this properly, so why bother", and even hating projects already done because "they suck". Probably things won't change overnight, but its good to have some useful tools to try to tackle the issue.
Thanks for all the great videos and psychological help Marc! Much appreciated! Have you checked out Super Crooks yet? I think you might dig the art style and I'd love to see you draw, Kasey. All the best!!
First I just listened to this video, and thought it was helpful. Then I watched your progress on this image: Mind blowing! I can't believe how 'ugly' this image looked at one point. I never knew how easily you could build up such an image. Well.. I say easy now and struggle later. I'm sure a lot of understanding of drawing went into constructing this picture as a whole.
Marc, if you end up seeing this, I beg of thee to advise me in my journey. I've been encountering the same issue with painting for a while now and I haven't been able to find a good way around it. When the time comes to take my rough painting and refine it, I find that when refining my blurry edges into sharp and resolved shapes I will often find myself painting over the lighting, texture, and other elements, flattening the details and having to re do them, but then in the process of re doing them, I end up muddying the edges. This back and fourth of going over my work makes rendering terribly inefficient and I have yet to find a solution.
I was literally just ina terrible mindset, as I’m trying to prepare for my game art portfolio to try to get accepted to any uni, I’m being hyper critical and constantly comparing, this was a breath of fresh air from my headache of thoughts, thanks!!
Thank you so much for this, Marc. I have recently joined an Australian comic art collective with a bunch of amazing people who have been published and have worked hard to improve their skills and have published work… and I feel like an imposter amongst them… at anytime they’ll banish me from the ship. I know this is me that is doing this and even my wife recognised it as she bought me an amazing book called Don’t Believe Everything You Think by Joseph Nguyen which is helping a lot. I have recently quit work and am taking 12 months to work seriously on my art and it’s stalled, because of me. In short, thanks for this video!
This video is really inspiring, as someone who really struggles with my self-esteem and negative thoughts This is essentially a self-fulfilling prophecy: if you think that you're bad at art, and if you see yourself fail, you're basically proving yourself that you're bad, and of course that leads to more negative thoughts and eventually dropping art altogether. Why bother if you just proved yourself that you're bad, you know? But that's the thing. Failure doesn't mean bad, it means you're just one step closer to improving. Art is an everlasting process of learning. You never stop growing as an artist or as a person, for that matter. There isn't a point at which you become "good". Your art will always matter at all points in time. All the failure and success, everything you draw has a meaning and purpose. It's your journey as an artist Instead of listening to your inner voice, tell yourself: "Yeah, I'm still growing, and that's what matters. It doesn't matter if I'm good or bad at it, what matters is that I enjoy drawing, and I will keep improving. Art isn't a competition, it's my self-expression" Improvement will come your way. All you really need to do is to keep practicing, analyzing, learning, studying, using references, etc. You will eventually grow. But art isn't JUST skill, it's also what you put into it. What meaning you give your art. It's what you feel and it's your inner world. Don't be so harsh on yourself. Your inner world matters. As for skill? That's something you shouldn't pressure yourself about. You won't be able to grow if you expect to immediately improve. Skill takes time, months, years. It's a lengthy process, but it's not about the end result, it's about the journey
Is hard not comparing to other people, in any kind of subject, being art, sports, studies, science, gaming, even looks. Is better to look less at others and more at oneself, practicing harder, learning something new like methods in the art subject. With time and hard work everything is possible, and yes theres people with talent specially in art, but everyone start somewhere, not at the same level, but can get equal at some point, but NEVER GIVE UP.
If you are gifted/ talented a good thing to do is change your inner voice from praising yourself for talent or brains or some intrinsic quality and start praising yourself for the work you put in and sticking with difficult things. This is based on a study where kids who were praised for intelligence actually performed worse in the next test than kids who got no praise and kids who got praised on their work ethic did better on the next test. Using your self talk to get in the mindset of someone who puts the hours in can really help something like art which takes so long to learn. On the cleaning your space. Totally agree. A few years ago I made a shift to cleaning my place and its been amazing to keep it clean. It also takes less effort to clean a tidy house than a messy one. Which brings me to my point. I divided 'cleaning' into 'tidying' and 'cleaning'. If you ever have a few minutes spare, tidy. If you leave your desk/ room and go to the kitchen, take some rubbish. Spend a minute putting clothes or documents away etc etc. Tidying is just about doing the little quick things but more often and it makes a MASSIVE difference. Then when it comes to doing a deeper clean (vacuum, dusting etc) its so much easier when you don't have to first worry about rubbish and dishes.
was literally looking back at some of my favorite artists and looking at the level of detail in their art, like bruh Im gonna need 8 more years of practice to get to that level 💀
Dang, that's the first time I can say what are the chances that that comes out now. Yesterday I had an incredible really crushing experience of self-depreciation, so I'm interested to listen to this. Hopefully it can make me calm down a bit.
As someone whose struggled with depression & ADHD for decades now and adopted 'small rituals' about two years ago, they are a huge mood booster and I highly recommend them to anyone struggling. They aren't a silver bullet but they helped me so I hope they can help you.
I swear negative thoughts can get you into greater heights once you learn how to direct these feelings correctly, (If you have the mental resilience to do so, otherwise you'll just get drepessed)
Your words and thoughts shape your reality. I couldn't agree more. 'Whether you think you can or you think you can, youre right' - Henry Ford 'As a man thinks in his heart, so is he' - King Solomon, son of David
I've kinda taken up the Andy Warhol thought process and decided to "just get it done". Even if I think my art sucks, I know other people are going to find meaning in what I make.
One day maybe i'll be able to silence that voice with some proof... You have been a help for that. Even if all those steps feel far too numerous to walk through...
4:21 this is so true! I feel less pressure to do a manhwa style illustration knowing that manhwa are normally made by a team of artists, each one working in a different aspect like lineart coloring and other stuff. And the fact that i can make a illustration somewhat comparable to their art, is so motivating. Even though i probably take more time than them to finish a piece. 😂

Since I force myself to draw more “difficult” things I've improved a lot, it's a great advice
Can't tell how many times my inner has fucked me up and once you clear the negativity which is hard and start thinking positive your work will change for the better
Glad to be one of the 27k+ students, Thank you so much for your hard work, Marc !
I'm addicted to this kind of lesson, drawing while listening to your lesson Boosted my focus and it keeps me going till there's no more space to draw on. Splendid 😃

Wow, it's amazing to know I'm not the only one who thinks that way.
Acting like a maniac waiting for his opponent to see the difference between the two and the frustration that comes when you see him drawing something you are not good at and you go desperately to try to learn it in order to catch up with him like a madman
You don't know how much your words relieved me and I will work hard to apply it in my daily life
thank you soooooooooo much❤❤❤
the voices.. they aways win
It’s gooood go watch!
It’s crazy that your weekly videos just happen to coincide with me in a fashion that’s so uncanny, as if our 🧠s are connected telepatheticly [🤣] and this week is no exception. It’s a bad habit of mine I need to reverse, sooner than later; so I give THANX for this weeks lesson! 🙇♂️
This is so helpful...I'm in a discord server with friends and everytime I post my art, it gets ignored or someone posts their art a few minutes later as if I didn't post anything. I
It's so demoralizing but seeing this has definitely gave me a brand new perspective.
Indeed, absolutely stellar painting! I especially love the camera and the lighting. In addition to the class fee, I subbed and liked on X 😊
One minute ago, I feel honored to be here so early. Great video so far, as usual.
As artists, I think, we tend to be a bit more sensitive. Introspection (not negative self talk!) is important. The artwork is beautiful! 👍🏻
Thank you for covering this. You've hit the core of my art problems!!!
for months now i've been in a pretty dark place in terms of art, whenever i finish something in digital i feel sad and hollow cause i can't find satisfaction in how my pieces turn out, but this may actually help with that. I'll start implementing it, thank you!
I've been hoping that voice would go away after years. Ironically, the more I listen to it, the more it wins.
Needed this video, as my fear of failure has been preventing me from drawing lately!! Thank you, Marc 🙏💕
Another amazing class by the man, the myth, the legend himself!
Seems like the voices in my head are getting louder and Marc heard them enough to make a class for everyone, what a cool dude!
Thanks teach and sorry for being so late 😭😭
I needed that video, i've been rough with myself recently even hating my art a little too much, thanks a lot 👍
Marc your videos are GOLD!🔥✨🏅
Why was this video recommended at exactly the right time I needed to hear this. Awesome. Thank you man!
you are an awesome human THank you for this advice!! i needed it
Fix your life = good art, thanks Marc. ❤
My inner voice is optmistic about the future but pessimistic about the present.
Its more like: "You sux, but one day you will be good"
It made sense in the past thinking this way, But now I become pretty good at drawing, and I still think that "I'm not there yet"
The topic is also very important, I feel like many people neglect how the mentality affects your art and efficiency
I'm not an expert on a topic, but what helped me a lot is comparing myself to myself instead to others.
Because that's also the case, with a greater skill and expretise, even if I don't like the piece now, nothing will stop me from redoing it in the future (though would be careful not to fall into the trap of ignorance)
My biggest struggle is always to get started and stay focused on which I'm working
thanks for the class as always
Thank you 🙏🏾
I really needed this video, as my inner critic is probably the core culprit of constant procrastinating and dropping most drawing ideas because "your skill is not enough", "you won't do this properly, so why bother", and even hating projects already done because "they suck".
Probably things won't change overnight, but its good to have some useful tools to try to tackle the issue.
Both your content, and your art, are amazing!
As a clinical psychologist and therapist myself, I stand by what Marc shared in this video.
Thanks for all the great videos and psychological help Marc! Much appreciated! Have you checked out Super Crooks yet? I think you might dig the art style and I'd love to see you draw, Kasey. All the best!!
Such a good word 👏🏼
First I just listened to this video, and thought it was helpful. Then I watched your progress on this image: Mind blowing! I can't believe how 'ugly' this image looked at one point. I never knew how easily you could build up such an image. Well.. I say easy now and struggle later. I'm sure a lot of understanding of drawing went into constructing this picture as a whole.
Your videos are awesome. Thank you
Great points, good sir!
Needed this, thank ya, Saitama - san
it is crazy that every artist has an inner voice I asked my brother if he had one he said no!?!?
Beautiful Jinx! 😍
The goat of the art community
omg i love this art (and video) i'm watching s2 of arcane and seeing an art like this is just so cool !
True stuff. Thank you Marc
This video is really inspiring, as someone who really struggles with my self-esteem and negative thoughts
This is essentially a self-fulfilling prophecy: if you think that you're bad at art, and if you see yourself fail, you're basically proving yourself that you're bad, and of course that leads to more negative thoughts and eventually dropping art altogether.
It's your journey as an artist
Instead of listening to your inner voice, tell yourself: "Yeah, I'm still growing, and that's what matters. It doesn't matter if I'm good or bad at it, what matters is that I enjoy drawing, and I will keep improving. Art isn't a competition, it's my self-expression"
Improvement will come your way.
Just got out of real school now I am on the school I like
Title got me good
And the thumbnail didn't? ❤
Thanks Marc
I finally saved up enough to buy the class! Hurray me 😭😭
If you are gifted/ talented a good thing to do is change your inner voice from praising yourself for talent or brains or some intrinsic quality and start praising yourself for the work you put in and sticking with difficult things.
I swear negative thoughts can get you into greater heights once you learn how to direct these feelings correctly, (If you have the mental resilience to do so, otherwise you'll just get drepessed)
the voices is gettin jolly
"clean your damn desk" damn that hitted hard lmao
For me it's gesture drawing that triggers negative inner voice
This dude mastered art
I accualy never have that. I just draw becuse it’s fun and stress reducing.
That's relaxing
I'm from Brazil and I love your videos
Thank you for this video Brunet senpai. Now to open a can of whupass on those negative thoughts.
needed that video , perfect timing!
Your words and thoughts shape your reality. I couldn't agree more.
'Whether you think you can or you think you can, youre right' - Henry Ford
'As a man thinks in his heart, so is he' - King Solomon, son of David
Marc Brunet lowkey spoiling the plot for Inception 😂
I've kinda taken up the Andy Warhol thought process and decided to "just get it done". Even if I think my art sucks, I know other people are going to find meaning in what I make.
That’s an amazing way to think about it.
I click for the jinx thumbnails, Marc’s cultured 😂
Marc do be Professor Xavior here thank you exactly what I needed👍👍👍
One day maybe i'll be able to silence that voice with some proof... You have been a help for that. Even if all those steps feel far too numerous to walk through...
talking about negative inner voices while doing jinx art.. very fitting hahaha
