Iris van Herpen | Between The Lines | Process film

- We invite you to have a look into the creative process of the new IvH Between The Lines Couture collection, inside the atelier and behind-the-scenes at the show in Paris.
'Between the Lines' explores the imperfection of systems and structure in both the physical and digital worlds. Van Herpen focuses on the gaps in between the structures of her materials, rather than the structures themselves, by shaping patterns that dissimulate the body’s perspective or subtract it.
By building up the patterns and then distorting them, the eye’s perspective is tricked and challenged to see new patterns occurring in between.
Linear shifts and sharp contrasts form the base of this innovative approach to material development and patternmaking and challenge us to “mind the system, but to find the gaps.”
To compliment her vision for this show, van Herpen collaborated with the Berlin artist Esther Stocker, who is known for her manipulation of dimensional geometries. She subverts spatial grids until the mind starts making linear connections that aren’t really there. For this show Stocker creates a tunnel of visual distortion, in which the models evolve within a conflict of light and shadow. By building up the lines and then distorting them, the eye shifts to see new lines emerge in between. For Stocker, the experience is implied as much by its gaps as it is by its contours.
The distortion created by glitches, short-lived faults in a digital system, also formed the design process of this collection, creating a new unexpected beauty of imperfection. The optical manipulation within the garments is based on hypnotic repetitive patterns in a minimal palette of black and white only, in order to delineate the silhouettes and textures. New techniques in this collection include soft 3D hand-casted PU fabrics that are hand-painted through injection molding and fine expandable laser-cut Mylar fabrics reminiscent of digital glitches in collaboration with architect Philip Beesley. The copper--plated diagonal heels shift the balance of the shoe, leaving a rectangular gap between the lines.

Many avant-garde shows today only show crazy clothes, have no sense of style, and are made just for the sake of being made, but with this collections I see there is techinque, there is passion, and most importantly, style put into these clothes. It is still wearable, turns heads, and is remains as spendid art. Excellent job.
It's couture, period. The materials used are LIQUID INFUSED ORGANZA and ensemble of... (as seen). They plan on market entry for 'unwearable' construct's to be presented in RAW-SILK, SMOOTHED-CHIFFON, lasered/ breathable crepe silk etc. Details Studio... instant I processed the 2 words; avant-garde, and upon realization of said scribe, the words changed to, Alexander McQueen!!! ;/)
Feel the same way tbh
If it would be wearable....it would be already selled, but it has many issues in real life. Like if you look closer on the hands which are sewing the black gown, you can see that the black colour will dirty your body if a person is sweating.
@@stepanmares1946 I don't think so - that black gown is made out of some kind of THICK rubber or plastic material. It cannot be sewn with normal sewing machines. I believe that the black color on the seamstress' hands are from grease or lubricant that allows the needle to puncture through that thick material.
The substance would be cleaned off of the gown before putting it on the model, of course
@@knottytoob wow! so those are not resin or something that is plasticky?
What I love about this, despite the garnered media attention and pressure among them, they all seem so at peace and at ease during the process. Like they have their own world.
This is pure TECH-ART!!!

I was so shocked to hear music from nine inch nails in this vid. Two of my favorite things put together!

I'd take 17 of IVH couture pieces that are thought out and well executed over 67 couture pieces any day...
Amazing
Can someone please tell me if they know the materials used in this, specificly the transparent material used in 1:13 and the black material that is laser-cut at 2:10
LDS even i want to know that. Please let me know if you get the answer to it. Thankyouu
Se me hacen bonitos los diseños , mi pregunta es ... ¿ hay alguien que usa estos modelos ? Perdón si parezco ignorante con respecto a la moda
Wow
She has a unique creation indeed. However, fact is, it is hard to sell in the market because this kind of fashion style is conditionally.
It's not to be sold in the market. Her work is meant to be worn in runways and on actors/singers/performers
I just realized this was one year ago whoops
Someone please help me to find this song 1:04
The second one is Nine Inch Nails' 6 Ghosts 1 and I know the first and fourth but not the third..

Is It from plastic right?
I want to study with you
Is there a reason I think Phoenix? There is nothing of fire here.
This designer is so Bjork! Has Iris van Herpen ever designed for her?
Oh yeah several times I believe
Amazing art😍😍😍..... But it's not for wear in events like Oscars or bafta... Metgala maybe ..... I guess. The materials seem heavy and not comfortable
What even is the liquid gelly stuff called? I wanna make a hat out of it... 🤣🤣 please someone answer me the correct answer... please...
Toxic
Why they trying to take a video.......they can find it on youtube XD
One thing i adore is the way the pieces in the thumbnail resemble a female reproductive system 😊✨🤘🏼
It is avant-garde and conceptual, but I would not call it a clothes. Just look at this plastic against skin make me shiver. For a clothes I like breathable and as natural as possible materials. It is strictly museum sculpture pieces with no future in real life.
You can't possibly have it all
a very interesting point of view, I understand what you mean. I was entranced by the clothes and the display.
Am i the only one who wonders how they smell?
I think they look fatastic but wonder how they feel.
... the modells look like robots ... I see no flesh and blood ... :-) but it fits to the fashion ....
All that will end up in the sea. Absurd.
They look stunning but if tgey are not biodegradable then that is a problem. I would have thought a young designer like this would care about such things but I don't know exactly what is bei g used here so its hard to say.
Ironic art.
meh. I love IVH's designs, but I'd hardly call this a "film" it was a few short video clips. no need for extensive credits. We've seen much more visually and editorially creative videos that echo Iris's phenomenal designs.
I’m not sure where you got the music, but it really sucks. I believe it is machine generated? Everything else about the film is perfect. Don’t junk it up with bad music.
