I lived in Iqaluit from 2010 to 2012. I'd go back in a heartbeat. I feel proud to say that I fulfilled a calling to go as a helping professional. I provided support and counselling for Inuit women and children at the YWCA shelters for domestic violence and homelessness - for the whole territory of Nunavut. There are no roads connecting hamlets. Air travel is their lifeline. Food security and basic human rights was a terrible situation then, as it has been in the past, and will be in the future. This report is right on the money (pun intended) - on so many levels and in so many ways! They have a few greenhouses to grow their own food. However it is not enough!! This debate was reverberating at that time and I attended several community meetings to give Inuit a voice, brainstorm solutions and collect their concerns. The costs for food and living conditions are outrageous. There are many statistics that are outrageous. I fell in love with our people of the north and was struck by their resilience and capacity to love. I urge all Canadians to learn about our first people and to find ways to give - in whatever ways & wherever they can.

Over $20 for 10lbs of flour!?
You can get that at my local Wal-Mart for about $3.50.
Flour is one of the cheapest food ingredients you can buy at a supermarket.

It seems like people have lived everywhere, but once our society started advancing quickly certain places just couldn’t keep up and now those places are much more expensive to live in compared to easier places. I don’t understand why they don’t just move. Why should we subsidize places that couldn’t keep up? If they can’t afford to support themselves we shouldn’t have to support them. Things change, the world changes. Learn when to move on.

Money flows up, not down. By giving the money to the retailers, the money went up, not down to the consumer.

That's what subsidy does. It artificially fixes the price of some products. If you are a beneficiary, you become a freeloader. If you don't qualify, too bad you have to shoulder the price increase due to smaller supply.

I haven't bought juice, soda , chips for decades, then I wasn't disabled and could save money. Now I feed 2 people on $100 USD/mo buying marked down meat, using instant pot and making soups, beans, lentils.. not sure how much garden will provide this year.. Those prices in the far north are brutal though and I wish Mayor Redfern wisdom and strength.

The mayor tells her that 7 of 10 Inuit kids are suffering from hunger and then she asks her to put a human face on the problem? What an idiotic thing to say.

Those prices are insane. How does anyone afford that? Even with the best of jobs, you'd never be able to keep up those prices. Yet I feel that's what we are going to face soon in the states. They are just printing money like crazy, that's what happens, inflation. Scary.

Need a price ceiling, too. Giving money to corporations without penalty agreement would not worked. Or you know just have a national food program instead for NWT, however, it will really likely not going to work well as we can see in petocanada or air canada rating

CBC the story should on the owners of the stores who are jacking up the prices on food, cause all Im seeing or hearing from your stories bout food going north is costly and no amount of government programs are going to help bring down prices in Nunavut or Yellowknife provinces. the store owners are at fault here cause someone is abusing the program. Where is the money actually going to? When the owners say how the money is divided up its always fuel or some other excuse. Where is the accountability for the money from government programs going?. It is certainly not towards the prices on the item but into the pockets of the owners. I think people should just order their own food from online like Amazon or other food retailers.

It's time to start rethinking food sources for the north. it's just a reality that food is more expensive the further from the source you get. Orange juice is not a logical staple item. Fresh cows milk in an area where there are no cows is not realistic. It's time to start thinking local Geothermal greenhouses for fresh veggies and cooler weather fruit, powdered milk or get your calcium from other more local non dairy sources sources. Save the subsidies for things that just aren't replaceable with like toilet paper. And if in the end that doesn't do it, then perhaps its time to rethink living in the north.

  • @badmojo420

If they aren't living off the land, what is the point of them still being up there? You can't expect walmart to show up with rock bottom prices when you live in such a remote area. Their ancestors lived there because they were self sustaining, so the remote location didn't matter, maybe they could try that again? Or move to a bigger city, or start their own food importing business, I mean there are plenty of options that aren't simply relying on the government to make your chips and dip cheaper.

why are we not building greenhouses and barns for these people .... i understand wanting to help a community but just throwing money at it isnt going to help anyone in the short term nor the long term ..... build them a place to grow their food and teach them the practices that they dont know , be it growing the food .. canning .. dehydrating... propogating and seed preservation......im sure they have the basics but help them thrive not just survive ... its a shame that we keep throwing money at these silly studies and ill fated projects .... and just the same the govenrment should support these same ideas around the rest of canada , there is food insecurities all accross this great country...

@Rob M ..well i am hoping (dreaming) that one day our government will get a clue and realise that helping someone out doesnt always mean a kick back .. it just means your helping out someone to help a community thrive .... i know its a pipe dream but if enough people dream about it and push their govenments to make it happen then i beleive one day it can become a reality
