Ihsahn - Arcana Imperii fits the theme of metal pioneers who are still great. Same with Celtic Frost's vocalist- Tom G. Warrior. He is still active with his band Triptykon. I'd recommend: TRIPTYKON - Aurorae if you want something newer.

Dethroned Emperor, Into Crypt of Rays and Morbid Tales a few great ones to listen to by CF.
First time I heard them was 1987 on a metal blade compilation along with Angkor Wat. I was a fan from then on! Bad ass!!!
