Good evening folks! EXCITING NEWS: Last year I cofounded a Neosoul/Funk/Jazz/fusion band called Pangolin. Last month we played a session LIVE at SoFar Sounds London which you can watch here!: ua-cam.com/video/iiBZu-LslHA/v-deo.html . The song "Double Consciousness" in the video is based on "Puzzle". Enjoy
Love that thing at 4:17. It's a great exercise to try making a phrase with just one or two notes of varying rhythms. And then the pentatonic line right after was sick. I hope someday I can make music this awesome!
Awesome made, awesome played! I could listen to this for my whole life! Would love to jam a little bittle with you...well that wont happen...good luck!
You are very welcome ;-) I would like to invite you to check out my (original) guitar work too and let me surprise you...;-) i just subbed to your channel, let's connect and follow each other...! Have a great and inspiring day... Bert
One day, your music is going to take off. It's fantastic! I can't wait to see where you take your career, it's going to be amazing. Keep up the great work.
Robbie!! :) At first my congratulation for your best intro ever! It's as the guitar puts a question and then the piano plays the answer. And I love, how you built a base of a slow, striding melody or rhythm and then let the discant turn arround it. That's a little remembrence on Anton Bruckner's symphonic style, who learned this from Bach. One more impression I have to say, I think, it's fewer improvisation as you say in the description: all sounds as striclty planned and accurately composed, as if you left nothing to chance. Accurately planning is however more a "very German" feature, can it be, you were a German in your "former life"? :D Dear Robert, thank you so much for this new output of your soul - as ever I will listen to it oftener for real understanding it! Sadly, this time you gave us no new eyecatcher for a new joke. No old-man-jumper, no cow-tshirt, no nothing. This is the one I have to criticize. :D Err ... what about the mirror at the door? :)
Ah Hartmut!! Thanks so much for the feedback! I'm really glad you like the piece, and especially the intro - I'm also very pleased with the way it builds, it was really fun adding all the different parts and then finally the piano when the song really kicks in. That's interesting what you said about the improvisation - You're somewhat right, because the 1st half of the 1st piano solo is pre composed, and the 1st half of the guitar solo is also pre composed. BUT, the 2nd half of these, and also the entire 2nd piano solo, is improvised :) Hahaha yes I was very careful with my choice of clothes this time!! Great to hear your opinion as always.
Thanks so much! Two of my influences who I'd say best fit this piece are Tom Misch and Robert Glasper. Check them out if you haven't already - really nice stuff! :)
Daamn youre soo tallented, i know how much work it takes to do that, you mastered piano and the guitar! thats so impressive, you will go very far young man, by the way, how old are you?
I do play Rhodes on most of my pieces! Check out Zuberator, and Written In The Bars from my latest album. And I use a Wurlitzer sound on Nice Place as well :)
I'm yet to form a band and perform my own music live, so all the gigs I do at the moment are basically just when a local gigging band needs a keyboard player. I really want to perform my own pieces though, so hopefully I can make it happen at some point!
Amazing job as always Robert! I've been curious about this for a while: what do you usually think about when improvising and what kind of scales or patterns do you tend to use? I'm a new(ish) jazz pianist and I'm trying to work on my ability to put my thoughts and ideas onto the keyboard. What do you usually think of and how do you practice improvisation?
Hi there, glad you like the piece! :) I think the best improvisation comes when the only thinking you're doing is subconcious - so like your brain hears something you've just played, then notices a pattern (or just something that would sound good to play next) and then tells your hands what to play next. In terms of scales: in this piece I mainly just stuck to the dorian mode and pentatonic in F (this is because most the chords in this piece are from the same scale) spiced it up with ornaments, different rhythms, and varied note combinations. Normally I like to work chromatically around the notes of the chord I'm playing on, and emphasise any changes of key/chord with the notes I'm playing :)
I do not know if I take the risk and buy the nektar 88. or stay with my audio m. I had recently tested. The m audio keystation 88. and it is very bad. The keys make a lot of plastic noise. And is not semi-weighted. I would like to know if the nektar has the keys with the weight similar to my m audio axiom air. The keys of the nektar make noise like dock?
I much prefer the Nektar to my M-audio Prokeys Sono. The keys on both are semi weight but the nektar ones are less springy and feel better quality, and are more expressive and have a smoother velocity curve. I would imagine the keys are similar to that of the axiom air.
I am trying to get into jazz piano.I am decent in theory and have benn learning classical for four years. Can anyone advice me how to start and what type of exercises and theory should I practice.
Joel Alvarez I have started practicing 7th augmented and dimished chords and practicing modes. Also one or two exercises for a 251 progression. But I am not sure how to improve.Learnt some voicings but find it difficult to improvise on my own.Although I can improvise in contemporary or modern classical type but can't do the same for jazz.
ahh I feel you. I know about those, the tough part I feel is physically remembering all the modes and their scales, and where to throw them in in certain situations when it comes to improv
Hey all! There were several things that helped me get into jazz piano. Firstly though it's probably worth saying that i did the classical grades which helped a lot with improvising because of having to learn all the scales. Anyway, before I got into jazz I tackled boogie woogie piano. Boogie woogie is a great gateway to jazz as it has many of the same elements - Swing, blues scales, jazz trills etc. I also found certain books helpful, for example the "Exploring Jazz Piano" books by Tim Richards. Finally, there's no substitute for just listening to lots of jazz, or actually any music you like, and working it out by ear. This is because as you develop your musical ear you gain an intuitive sense of how to improvise and structure chords. Plus is basically like learning from the experts! Hope this helps :)
hello bro. one question please. the nektar 88 is semi weight or synth action keys? Bounce the keys or are they light as a synthesizer? thank you from Spain
I think the total number days where I worked on this piece was maybe 7 or 8, but I normally compose in big chunks, so I'll compose for a whole day, and then nothing will come to me for another week or month, and then I'll feel inspired again and compose another big chunk.
Thanks! Chords are: D minor 7... A flat major 7 9 13... G major flat 7, 13... G flat major 7, sharp 11... B flat major 7, 9... D flat major 7... E flat major 6, 9.

Gotta be impressed by a pianist who plays guitar better than most guitarists

Thank you! Hearing from a more refined pianist really helps.
I look forward to hearing what you compose next!

hello bro. one question please. the nektar 88 is semi weight or synth action keys? Bounce the keys or are they light as a synthesizer? thank you from Spain
They are semi weighted. I really like the action on it actually, it's very expressive but also good for synth/organ work :)
Just curious, do you have perfect pitch? Amazing work as usual (:
Thank you! And I don't have perfect pitch. :)
how do you record your audio and sync it with the video?
+Cameron Campbell Music I use Movavi Video Suite :)
How long does it take for you to make a composition like this?

What scale did you use on this song?
Marcio Victor Mostly F pentatonic and Mixolydian
Robert Dimbleby Valeu! Obrigado amigo! (Thank you my friend! )
Your guitar playing is as nice as your keys!

No problem, you're a very talented individual!
