  • For about 140 years, the San Juan Extension of the Denver & Rio Grande Western has always been a busy section of railroad. Originally built with the intention of mining silver in the area, turned into an oil boom, and later one of the most celebrated tourist railroads in the United States. The fall season is the most popular among tourists to visit the beloved Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The foliage is among some of the most beautiful in the world, stretching for over 64 miles along the right-of-way between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado. This is our first of four videos coming soon of the D&RGW operating in the fall. We spent three days on the railroad chasing trains going up Cumbres Pass and as far as Los Pinos. It was a fantastic time documenting the native locomotives working hard up the hill. Mainly of K-36 #484, sporting a DT&I 5 Chime. We also got to see K-36 #488, with a Nathan 5 Chime, and K-27 #463 with a D&RGW Hooter, hustling their trains to the desired destination. We hope you enjoy this production of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operating in the fall!

Anybody know exactly why C&TS took 483 (which just so happens to be the locomotive on their logo) out of service and never returned her to service?

It was just worn out. It was the favorite of the D&RGW crews so it was used a lot from the mid to late-60s up until its retirement in the mid-70s. There really has been no demand in recent years to completely rebuild the thing when they already have 6 operational locomotives. Even though most are in need of repair now, it's better than having a full on rebuild when small problems can be fixed.
