    Great review as always, I agree that it looks too big at the headstock. I play a Luna High Tide 8 string tenor and it's only 37mm at the nut. Overall it looks a lovely little uke. One of my band members has a Noah concert and he's really pleased with it. Noah are very local to me as I live in Worthing! Stay safe Baz, keep on with the great reviews!

    Hello Baz, years ago I gave my wife a Kamaka 8 string tenor ukulele. She plays it with a pick, like a mandolin.
    This looks prettier than hers. A set of Worth Clears really make it sing! You’re right about nylon strings, I hates em too,
    Around here, more and more people are trying out the 8 string phenomenon. The sound grows on one. It works well for Irish folk music too!

    I'm definitely a fan of Noah - if there was such a thing as a "factory" perfect Noah would more than stand its own against anything in the sub £500 class.
    My 2020 style spruce concert has a variation in the staining on the back of the neck (I think I noticed similar on your 8 string review model- so maybe it's a fashion statement :-) ); one of the spindles for the tuners is about 2mm out of alignment and the top joint is slightly more obvious than on some other examples (but I've seen "worse" in hand made ukes costing more than £1000 ).
    The thing is, if this was being sold as a factory produced uke for £500, the cosmetic issues might lead to it being discounted by about £50 but Matt is selling them for around half that price! Although there are plenty of all solid ukes at the sub £300 level, even the equivalent models from the better regarded mass produced brands are beginning to drift north of the £300 mark.
    So, you could get a good uke for under £300 but, what you get with Noah that stands out, particularly at this price point, is the feeling that it has been put together with a sense of purpose by someone who really knows what they are up to.

  • @ukeleleEric
    @ukeleleEric 3 роки тому +1

    When you started, I was thinking "8-string concert? won't work." But maybe it does. I have various sizes; mainly a soprano man myself, but was given (YES!) an 8 string tenor a short while back (the Baton Rouge Tenor you reviewed well, as it happens). So I have ventured into 8-string land. Yes, there are some songs that it suits, and some it definitely doesn't. Wouldn't recommend it as an only uke, but for someone who already knows how to play a four-string moderately-well, it adds another dimension and opens up other possibilities. I usually chord-melody-fingerpick my 8 string, and I haven't found it that difficult, but other people's mileage will vary.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  3 роки тому

      Yep - all about that extra dimension. That's exactly it. As for scale - I seem to recall Phil Doleman has a taropatch made for him by Rob Collins that is concert scale.

  • @Kalama54
    @Kalama54 3 роки тому

    There is some very interesting history around 8 string concerts. Martin developed "or copied what was being made in Hawai'i" what is historically called a taropatch ukulele. It is rumored that this is the basis of the concert size body as it was larger than the most common size of it's day and age that being the soprano or standard in Kamaka sizes. Traditionally tuned in unison for all pairs. Now days Ohana, and occasionally Pono make their own examples (I have a Pono example, Pono ACT). What I do is use the worth BM strings and it is an incredible and historical sound that just works for some songs. If you want a very trippy Ukulele take a look at the Ohana Tiple.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  3 роки тому

      Goes back further - the Tiple being the clue - that goes back to pre-Hawaiian instruments

    The wound G-string on this one, is a bit dominating. Not a fan of that. But as you (and everyone else) say: It's really great looking and sounding instrument at a great price! I got a Noah Baritone in the summer of 2020. Made in feb. 2019. It has a few ekstra flaws. And it makes sense, that quality has improved since. Butt Matt was great, all the way through, and the uke sounds GREAT. Not overly boomy (Spruce top, Monkey Pod back and sides), but warm and punchy at the same time. A guitarist friend of mine tried it the other day. He could'nt believe that you could get an instrument like that at that price.

    Does it come with a hard case? Otherwise, it might be an odyssey trying to find one that fits. A friend of mine has a beautiful glass-topped credenza with ukulele hangers mounted under it. But when we tried to hand a 5-string slothead under it, it wouldn’t fit; the head was too large. That would certainly be the case with this one!
    I like the sound of this instrument. I don’t think I would get much use out of it, though. As it is, my 5-string rarely comes out out its case.

    • @GotAUkulele

    Seems like a nice uke. I think you're being overly generous on the mismatched tuners, and especially the missing screw. Sure they can send you new screw, (and a set of tuners to make them match, I suppose), but at that price point, and a maker of that reputation, the combination of these two mistakes is unacceptable. It indicates a lack of attention to detail. Maybe I'm just too picky.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  3 роки тому +1

      I don't know if the screw worked loose in transit to me rather than leaving the workshop like that. (Things happen - I once had a new Pono arrive with me that cost more than three times this price and one of the tuner button screws had come out and was rolling around in the case. Who is at fault there?
      So I I use my judgment on knowing the sales service of the brand from speaking to many other buyers. This would not result in a dispute with Noah - it would just get sorted. No biggie. Had this been an Amazon 'direct from factory' or a high street store with a difficult reputation, that would be a different story - because the after sales would be a royal hassle. Big difference.
      As for the mismatch colour - that IS an odd one - they are virtually un-noticeable and obviously make zero effect on how it works / plays though. In fact, I only spotted it making the video in close up.

  • @odontomatix
    @odontomatix 2 роки тому

    At that price, there should not be tuner mismatch and missing screw. I would have dinged this for poor quality control. I bought an Aklot 8-string which came with Aquila strings (wound low G) for US$78 including shipping in USA. Sure, it is mahogany laminate, but it plays well and the tuners are matched and smooth-working. That's a big difference in price.

    • @GotAUkulele

      It was a QC mistake, no question.. however - anyone who has dealt with Matt at Noah will know - he's one of the most helpful sellers I've come across - if one arrived like this - he'd sort it out in a flash with no fuss. That's a big bonus when buying. Aklot would involve waiting for another from China. In fact they'd probably just send you another free instrument as they do that a lot to people in return for positive reviews... ever wonder why there is no Aklot review on Got A Ukulele?
