  • The branch collar is the swollen junction of a branch where it joins the trunk. The branch collar has healing chemicals at this junction that come into play when the branch is removed. Certain species of trees have a branch collar that protrudes from the trunk. This is particularly notable on Spruce and Pines. It is important when pruning these species to be sure to cut to the branch collar and not into it. A cut that is flush to the trunk on these species will result in a wound that does not heal.
    Bop demonstrates how to find this branch collar and how to make a proper cut.
    No wound dressing should be used. The tree should be allowed to heal naturally from the branch collar.
