  • This video zooms into the core of a rich star-birth region called the Lagoon Nebula, located in the constellation Sagittarius in the direction of our Milky Way galaxy’s central bulge. The sequence then dissolves to a series of imagined three-dimensional flights past striking structures of this gaseous landscape. Viewers examine dark, dusty clouds silhouetted against a colorful background of luminous gas that has been heated by a massive star. Pillars of dense gas and bow shocks around newborn stars are shaped by the strong winds from the brightest stars. The intense high-energy emission from these same stars creates the glowing ridges of gas in ionization fronts. These features are some of the highlights of this vibrant region where new stars and planets are born.

Just wait until we see the type of quality the James Webb Telescope gives us. It gives me chills thinking about it.

I couldn't even imagine how awesome it would be to live on a planet that has this as a view in the night sky. Yes, I know these aren't the true colors, but I'm certain there would be variety of shades (& shapes) that would look amazing! ;O)-

Very cool,,just wondering how big those clouds of gas and stuff is?? I know they have to be huge to hide stars

Nice cartoon. Reminds me of entirely misleading and inaccurate depictions of nebulae from Star Trek. So why no footnote explaining how no radar, camera, or vision can "see" the presence of a nebula from the inside? Just as water is only blue in color when looking at large amounts of it from far away, and yet entirely transparent up close, so too are nebula -- only to an exponential extreme. Water has a molecular density of 1.6 sextillion (1.6x10^21) per cm^3. Star-birth nebulae range from 100,000 to 100 molecules / cm^3 which makes them especially invisible even from a few light years distance. Are you going to make me put this footnote in the comments of all such videos, or can we eager taxpayers and devoted fans count on you to do the right thing and write you own elaborations -- aka "retractions"?

Hi. Could you please introduce a good and proper small telescope which allows me to discover more than what i see with my eyes? Thank you.

the earth, our galaxy, and even the universe is certainly beautiful beyond anything man could ever dream, only god could have came up with anything similar, and personally i am thankful he put such beauty out there for us to study, learn from, and look at every day and night of our lives as we drive to school, work, or step onto our front porch and look up. i am always amazed by him and his work!

It's a nice video but much of the video is CG renditions of a photo so as to add more resolution / effects / stars / gas to make it look pleasing. Good job! Nice when we can use more real footage and still have it look as good.
