The Pillars of Creation: A 3D Multiwavelength Exploration

- This scientific visualization explores the iconic Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula using data from the Hubble and Webb Space Telescopes.
Based on scientific results, astronomers and artists modeled this striking formation in three dimensions and created a movie that flies past and amongst the pillars. What looks like 3 pillars in a two-dimensional image separates into four dust clouds with ionized gas streaming away from each.
As the virtual camera files through the model, the view shifts back and forth between the visible light and infrared light perspectives. Viewers gain an appreciation of the contrasting observations seen by Hubble and Webb, and how the telescopes complement each other by probing different scientific aspects of the clouds.
The Pillars of Creation nickname derives from the fact that stars are forming within these dust clouds. The visual tour highlights various stages of star formation including an embedded protostar at the top of the central pillar, bipolar jets from a unseen forming star in the upper part of the left pillar, and a newborn star in the middle of the left pillar.
This visualization is a product of the AstroViz Project of NASA's Universe of Learning. A longer and explanatory visualization, including narration detailing the structures and science, is available as "The Pillars of Creation and the Interplay of Stars and Dust".

So, it's actually three ferrets that are responsible for creation.
In the beginning when the ferrets created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from the ferrets swept over the face of the water. Then the ferrets said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

Pretty, BUT THE 3D IS ENTIRELY MADE UP!!! Annoyed me that they act like they could shift perspective and show the sides of things, as if they have ANY idea of anything but the flat on view of it!
I don't think that is entirely correct. IIRC, there was a study a few years back that reconstructed the 3D structure based on actual observations.
@@sundaydiver When you are 6500 to 7000 light years away from something, there is really NO parallax, even between the telescopes when on one side of the sun and when you are then on the other side (which is less than 16 light minutes). Without parallax there is no depth beyond the flat view.
This caps lock doesn’t reassure me that you’re a level-headed expert on these things. More caps lock, less credible.

If a spacecraft were to achieve a ridiculous speed like 0.1 c, and fly thru any portion of a pillar, would it likely pass thru and not hit anything?
I’m not in any way an expert, but nebulae density is supposed to cap out around 10,000 particles per cubic centimeter, and presumably you’d be crossing vast distances at 10% of c, so you’d surely collide with atomic-scale objects in great amounts.
Space is pretty dusty too, which I think is largely a product of cooled stellar ejecta, but I’m not sure.
Collisions with even tiny things are extremely energetic at relativistic speeds, so you’d better have a serious debris shield on that ship.
